Popping Corn on the Cobb is So Cool!

  • And so I heard that you could pop popcorn straight off the cobb and that sounded kind of fun so I decided to try it out with some sweetcorn. I put it in the microwave for a couple of minutes and while it got really hot - none of the kernels popped. And so I wrapped it up in foil like you do when you put it on the grill - that was a bad idea. Then I found that regular sweet corn is way to soft to pop and you have to use a different type of corn where the shells of the kernels are much stronger. So I got some of this corn and I could tell right away that the kernels were way harder and tougher. So I put one into the microwave and, after a while, sure enough, they started to pop up a storm. Then we pulled out some of the popcorn, added some salt, and started to munch.

  • @ScorpioHR
    @ScorpioHR Рік тому +169

    The reason corns pop is because there's water inside them. The microwave, on the other hand, is resonating with water (making it's molecules vibrate faster and faster and raising it't temperature in the process) which makes the water inside turn into gas. More heat there is to the gas, the higher the pressure. When the pressure goes over the threshold kernel can withstand, the kernel will pop / explode.
    What we have here, basically, are mini hand-grenades, because that's exactly what happens there: hard shell has pressure inside it raising and that energy pushes it out and we have explosion.
    Reason why soft kernels don't work is because there's no "snapping point", vapor just creates micro-pores and gets out of the soft tissue. The critical pressure never occurs.
    It's like blowing air into the baloon and into a sponge - one will pop up after some time, the other will just leak it all out.

    • @ScorpioHR
      @ScorpioHR Рік тому

      @@JesusProtects They would pop eventually, but they probably need more heat and the others would just char / get burned, so we stop it. If you could separate popped from the "duds", and give duds a second go, they might pop eventually. Or they're just solid without a pocket inside them so no water to heat up and nothing to raise the pressure...
