@@saulocpp yeah I do love EVH style - a true innovator, but Steve Farris had far more than just EVH up his sleeve. His use of the whammy bar certainly owes a lot to EVH but listen to the albums and you'll hear loads of other stuff going on - clever use of delays and harmonisers, lots of clean sounds, very little (if any) right-hand tapping. Farris was doing things a little differently to the pure hard rock guys at the time, and that fitted Mr Mister's sound perfectly.
Music mattered over appearance and sex appeal ...though Richard had sex appeal in buckets. He was gorgeous back then and still handsome and still has that voice.
What a wonderful voice he had and still has. He is never out of tune. May he continue to delight us with his beautiful voice for a long time. Greetings from Chile
And this was the last live performance they ever did! Guitar player Steve Farris left shortly thereafter. Whereas the remainder would continue as a trio and record the excellent album Pull (which was only released in 2010, and then reissued just recently in January 2020 with new tracks), there would be no more live gigs. Plans for a Scandinavian tour in the mid-90s fell through and by the release of Pull in November 2010 there just wasn't enough interest to warrant a tour. Shame.
Steve Farris was a major part of their signature sound. It's sad that he left because of musical directional differences, but Steve Farris return to studio session work afterwards, and now has since retired from the music industry (for now). Hopefully, they all will have a reunion album someday soon....
@@joeyricci3796 I wouldn't hold my breath. Both Steves are pretty much retired from music and it would take an incredible amount of effort for them to go in and do a gig, let alone an album. However much I'd love to see the guys share the stage for the first time since 1988, it won't happen. Sadly.
I had the album on vinyl. I remember carrying home on the bus like treasure. I played it over & over again in my bedroom, poring over the black & white photos on the inner sleeve. They sounded like nobody else. Hard to believe this man will be 70 in 8 weksr time.
Same here! I recorded the record straight to cassette as soon as I got it home on the bus, and played it endlessly on my boombox... it was my Grade 10 soundtrack. I would have gone absolutely berserk if I had caught this on TV back then. I would have taped it on the VCR of course to play over and over.
That was unbelievable!! For a television show??!!! These guys were too good. And the engineer on that needs recognition too!! Amazing how well rehearsed they were, and how comfortable chopping through that song like that. Yeah! Those days are gone. I heard Steve Farris say that any guy with a " Mac" computer can do an album. They can, but they can't play like this!!!
Love this band on so many levels....and to come out and belt out Stand and Deliver of all songs, I tip my hat to Richard. Holy crap I KNOW that is NOT easy to do.. *thumbs up*
He knew this vocal would give him trouble this night. It's a pretty involved bass line, too. He's concentrating like mad to stay in it, and I don't blame him.
Their so little guitar on this album it's no wonder Steve wound up leaving. This is one of the few songs on the record with some guitar. Sadly, there's been very little heard from Steve. Good player, really cool tone.
Here is the latest interview in this podcast: thehustle.podbean.com/e/ep-156-happy-3rd-birthday-to-us-with-steve-farris-of-mr-mister/ Awesome stuff, it looks like Richard Page wanted to record Go on album all by himself. And the mixes on this record were poor and when Steve heard them, he was determined to leave the band. I agree with Steve here. Mixes are poor and flat. Richard should record a solo album. Instead, he demolished a band, who had a chance to become super famous.
Agreed. Farris is a great player. The whole band are great musicians. Honestly this album should have been larger than what it was. I agree that more guitar as well as more of Pat’s drumming would have helped. Mix wasn’t great because these songs were very good, both lyrically & musically.
Exactly. Farris also said that grooves and overall playing was even better on Go On than on Welcome to the real world. Funny thing though, I wear the face album was also poorly mixed. According to Farris, I wear the face material was so rehearsed, that live versions of those songs were light years better then those versions on the album. Overall, they didn't have luck with mixes, except with Welcome to the real world. Farris was deeply involved in mixing process and he and Paul DeVilliers had often listen mixes in Farris's car cassette recorder.
Hey guys! The alternative version of this song, you can hear the whole guitar track. On the final mix of Go On , most of guitar parts was muted.....sad...
DesertRose122.. I had not noticed that.. Wow.. You're right! Richard was and is so handsome, it is hard to imagine any other man looking that much like him. A beautiful person inside and out.
You can tell this an old, square American director on an American TV show that has no interest or knowledge of music. He focuses solely on Richard Page, briefly shows Steve Farris (but badly) and never shows Steve George or Pat Mastelotto. A band is more than one person you jerk! Great band for their time. Deserved more mainstream success. Great production. A real mega-80s sound!
Did anyone ever reveal what actually happened between Richard and Steve F? For me, Steve's unique approach to guitar was as part of their sound as Richard's voice. Really miss him.
That's an awful lot to read into it. The song is tough on his vocals. He loses the high end halfway through the song on all the live takes that are floating around today. No wonder if being about to take on a song that does that makes you seem a little tense. He was just prepared to perform. Nobody would have questioned the decision, had the band decided to avoid performing that song live. Instead, he stays true to his sense of purpose, literally the chorus of the song. I think that's impressive.
They sound great. Not the most exciting song, but pretty good. Page looks bored beyond belief though. Not surprised they split not too long after this.
I'm so confused. What was their style? All over the genre map, with a strong christian theme generously sprinkled about. But then you've got two major hotties fronting the band a la John (Ferris) & Paul (Page), and the sex appeal is off the charts. Plus the 80s were just so damn weird for music. If they'd selected a style and stuck with it, and committed to moving the band forward, they'd be another U2.
Why the hell would anyone want to be u2?? They were more like the Cars who in my opinion were a far better band. Richard Page is the singer and yes he was a major hottie. Gorgeous .
It’s Steve Ferris and Richard Page not John and Paul. And, that’s what was great about Mr. Mister. Their songs weren’t just the same boring thing over and over. And, I might get a lot of hate for this, but, U2 is one of the worst bands I’ve ever heard in my life. It’s just slow boring rock.
Love Steve Farris' guitar style...
He had some great solos here.
You mean you love EVH style, eh?

Steve Farris, amazing guitar player and great tone !!!!!
His voice is so flawless, amazing¡
Proof that the mullet never died!

Richard's hair looks awesome here. :)
A non-audio-tuned masterpiece! Love me some Mr. Mister! The 80's! when music mattered.
You are absolutely right, but it's "auto-tune", not "audio-tune"...

No, it's definitely aural-tuned.
Richard Page never looks like he's breaking a sweat at the mic. What a voice....
....and the drummer Pat Mastelotto, great! Superb!!
Very friendly & engaging in person, as well. He's SELF-TAUGHT - unbelievable - & inspired me to learn drums myself!
@@OneHope4Heaven I'll second that! Pat is one of the nicest guys out there and he's very creative so he can really affect a song's feel.

Steve is superb player lateral thinker on the guitar and it works.
One of the greatest groups of the 80's!!! Richard's voice is so powerful!

Eddie Van Halen heard Farris on a KISS track and told Paul Stanley 'thats the guy you need'...

Amazing singer/band!
Page looks like a princess in this video haha! The more I listen to this band, the more I love them.
Richard Page is so cool. Such a soulful singer, with incredible range. Yet so modest and sincere. No pretense. Just a true talent, like no other. 😎
Mr Mister one of the best US Band from the mid 80's
All these comment about Richard page and Steve farris....what about the keyboard player Steve George? He was very intricate to the sound.
Along with that melodic bass line, SG really does the heavy lifting throughout this tune, and the parts and patches he created are exquisite.

Gotta give it to them, gutsy song to attempt live 🤘
If only this band had been big in the 90's, we could have seen Mr Mister on the Mr Show w/Bob & David!

Apparently it became more focus on Richard and his voice, not enough guitar for Steve. True? I don't know

I always thought Harris played a little sloppy for such a polished band. Pages voice is like honey though! Wow!
Chris Chapman interesting actually I was actually thinking the opposite in this case.
Steve makes the band! It’s obvious! When he left, everything went down hill.
