Snow Burdened Branches is (in my opinion) one of the best atmospheric black metal songs ever made. Before I heard Panopticon I thought America wasn't able to produce quality black metal, but Panopticon changed my mind upon that. Today I went to the forest to pick up mushrooms, and listening to this at the same time made me feel so-fucking-good. Kiitos tästä Panopticon and big thumbs up from Finland!

This thing is a BEAST. First listen answered a lot of internal frustrations that I have regarding future lifestyle choices. Everyone needs the woods, man. No other project, or group, emphasizes that message in a way like Panopticon. I'd rather be poor and living primitively than have a life full of confusion and affluence.

So I am totally into Panopticon, Alcest, and Les Discrets and took the time to learn more about Austin Lunn (headman of Panopticon). I am so intrigued by the fact that this music takes a lot of its inspiration from the beauty of the Northern Minnesota wilderness. Listening to this album invokes a feeling of open space, cold air, and the primordial thirst for the forest. I would say if you like Panopticon and respect the message take a look at some of the interviews concerning this album and learn more about Austin Lunn and why the album transitions from black metal to Appalachian folk and bluegrass and how inspired that is.
I feel like anymore I am drawn to an idea rather than a specific genre of music and the fact that this album, and a lot of Austin's work, speaks to me in that way only testifies to the fact that like minds attract each other no matter what boundaries or labels society tries to get us to conform to.
So being on this schtick with this music after learning more about Austin and about his brewery, where he is head brewer, I decided I wanted to take the time to experience brewing as well while listening to this album and I couldn't help but think about the ideas that this album invokes and demonstrates and how it really is about the simple things more than anything else and the sooner we can learn that or unlearn our complacency with complication, the sooner we can experience life to it's fullest.

    • @juanker52
      @juanker52 6 років тому +10

I agree on many of those things, but neglecting complication is not the way. Austin sings in this album about the forests and nature in general and how we are affecting them negatively by failing to think about and address the negative consequences of our actions upon them. This is a problem that requires careful thinking and complex and deliberate solutions.

Never heard of this band before. All I can say is that I am really glad I tripped over them. Very melodic. I am a huge metal fan,of all subdivisions there of. This has made the always expanding list. I always dig the bands that base their influence of their music on a outdoor/nature,nordic-like philosophy. Very surprising to hear that sound coming from a U.S. based talent/band. Scandinavian bands usually capture that sound with perfection. Kudos!!

I love metal, but I've never been a fan of black metal. I'm still not, it's like I haven't found the right emotions to feel when I hear it. It was the same with a lot of death metal, and then I figured out what I was feeling and became attached to it. I hope I can enjoy black metal one day for records like these. You say everything I've ever wanted someone to say in a song. Free ourselves from consumption, and look towards where we came from. The forest. The Americana sections might be my favorite music ever, I'm unbelievably in love with your music. And I have felt your message for years prior, I just never knew it. I have always been in love with our glorious winters, and the thought of it disappearing scares me.

Agreed. I understand his reasoning for some of the things he had listed (the layered or buried vocals, as some would prefer them to be more prominent), although he's right that the previous three albums do set an incredibly high expectation that might not be to his personal liking, which is fair I suppose. I personally think this is one of the best albums to come out this year, we'll see if I end up enjoying it more than Autumn Eternal, though.

Nobody's a fan of Austin Lunn.
    You're a student of him.

I just ordered the second part on vinyl. Totally fine with it, I like the first part, for what it is, but the second half is where my heart is at...if I want metal I'll stick with the new Obsequiae or Blut Aus Nord.

Anyone know a place for lyrics to this album, Autumn Eternal, and/or Kentucky?

From what I understand there are printed lyrics included in the packaging for Kentucky, but all his other lyrics are a total mystery. I've never been able to find any, at least

Tried to take down the lyrics to Beast Rider, as I want to work out the story but there are a few words I can't make out...
      [Foot] left the road
      By the temperance river
      Superior [bringing it for] years
      She passed through valleys
      Of the once s[coured] hills
      [Nothing the astral wheels]
      Winter was short
      Abnormally dry
      Snowfall had been so slight
      The sun had set
      Yet the journey she made
      Under the northern lights
But the cabin wasn’t far [for a drunkard]
So she followed the guide of the stars
      The thaw had been early
      Not a stitch of green
And the fear grew in her heart
      She stumbled through the spruce
      Turned a blind corner
Just shy of a cabin up the way
      There it stood
      Like a tall dark shadow
      Bringer of her last day
      Morning came
      They scoured the woods
But there was neither sight nor sound
      And to this day
      The [grotto] remains
But it is all they found
      But if you listen
      Between the waves
There echoes her last breath drawn
      Under the northern lights
      By the temperance river
She rides that beast into the dawn
