Great comparison. Have you compared power draw between these 2 processors during Cinebench? Also, did you have to upgrade BIOS to get the Xeon to work?
I haven't compared power draw, but I would imagine they are almost identical, with the Xeon coming in slightly lower because of no onboard video. Most relatively current Dell BIOS upgrades will contain the CPU microcodes for the Xeons, but I have seen systems with REALLY old BIOS versions need updated before they would POST with the Xeon. Thanks for watching!
I came to the same conclusion. Im running i5-3550 and would only see about 5% increase switching to a xeon. I occasionally throw some offers on 1230's or 1240's on ebay for 10 bucks or less. Maybe someone will accept that offer... or maybe not, idk or really care lol
The fastest CPU available for your model Optiplex is a Core i7 2600 and the Xeon equivalent is the Xeon E3-1270. You can also drop down to an E3-1240 that is clocked 100Mhz lower and cheaper. Thanks for watching!
I don't have an i5 to test, but I do think it'd be a worthwhile upgrade. Especially if you resell your i5 and recoup some of the cost. Thanks for watching!
I have a Dell 3020 wondering if there is a faster GPU than the i7 4790, such as a Xeon that will fit. It looks as though the Xeon e3-1270 v2 is for a Socket LGA 1155 and the socket for a 3020 is a Socket 1150.
The E3 v3 Xeons are the 1150 CPUs that would fit the Optiplex 3020. Unfortunately, there's only one Xeon that is faster. The E3 1286 v3 has a 100Mhz faster base/turbo frequency, but it's way too expensive to be realistic. A 4790K would be your fastest option. Even though you can't overclock it, the stock clocks are faster than the 4790 non-K CPU.
There are no socket 2066 Core i7 CPUs that I know of, but some Core i9 series X CPUs will work in your system. Look at HP's site for your computer and go to the supported CPU list to see what you can use. There are some Xeon series W and i9 series X processors that look like good upgrade options.
The fastest officially supported CPU for the Optiplex 390 is the Core i7 2600. The 2600K would technically work, but you can't overclock it in this system, so it is kind of pointless.
PARDON my Ignorance...would a Dell 7040 SSF i5-6500 be "better" for 2D CAD-work IF swapping for a Xeon? If its even possible? Besides, the name "Zeon" sound cooler :-) tanx. subd/liked
Hmm, the Xeon would be a little better than the i5, but it's basically the same as an i7 in an Optiplex. The main advantage of a Xeon is ECC RAM, but the Optiplex motherboard won't support it, anyway. Thanks for the sub!
Yeah, I think the max amount of supported RAM in the 3010 is 16GB. You only have two slots, so you have to do two 8GB sticks, but I've done it before and can confirm it works. Thanks for watching!

Also , Xeon E3-1230v2 has less TPD which is better.
I7-4790 has internal graphics for a good web-surfer/media player.
And the i7 4790 is still a respectable CPU after almost 10 years on the market.
Thanks for the review

which xeon model can I power my optiplex 990 mt, I currently have an i5 2400 and I have a bottleneck with an 8gb rx 580

@@EscoTech Xeon e3-1230 v2 and Xeon E3-1270 both of there same socket 1155. why optiplex 990 can't using Xeon e3-1230 v? there any reason other ?
how you update the bios? support the Xeon E3-1245 v5?
So the Xeon is a great upgrade for an i5 optiplex, awesome! Although I wonder by how much, do you have an i5 to test that?

@@EscoTech Thanks for that info.
i found a i7 1155 for $36 and $40 on ebay they 3.4hz 2600k would this one work
lga1155 i see its the same thing. ok
hai bro. i have HP Z4 G4 Xeon w2123. can i swap any i7? motherboard have any issues when i change

Hello, in windows can you see all 8 logical core of Xeon or not?
Yep. As long as Hyperthreading is enabled in the BIOS, all 8 threads will show up.
I have a 390. How far can I go up with a i7 CPU?

its not a $40 difference in price they from $36 to $45 ones i seen
Yeah, as the older i7 CPUs come down in price, the Xeons aren't as good of a deal, anymore.
@@EscoTech a new one would be expensive around $100 probably . yea I'm definitely getting one for mine.
