you are like the Bob Ross of guitar reviews
Must be the hair! :-)
Rory Bevis damnit, beat me to it
One on order because of this recommendation - thanks, Bill!
One of these arrives tomorrow along with an ebow. Look what you made me do!
Thanks for all you do Bill it is appreciated!
You are gonna love it!
The thing that strikes me, is how instantly lost in the music you become. You go someplace else. Very cool.
It's so relaxing to watch your videos. It's like therapy for nerves! Thanks!
Glad you like them. Thanks for letting me know!
Another great video. I love the way that guitar looks! Love the flame.
+Ron Shaw I really like the flame too!
I'm super stoked these came out. They've got basically everything that I thought was missing from the Mushok signature.
+Andrew Vickery Super cool, for sure. AND as usual, I am not content with the semi-hollow body only. I want to get the solid body to make a matching pair!
I have this guitar. For some reason it doesn’t make the same sounds that this guy makes, but it’s still awesome.
Love they also have that Push/Pull Tone Control w/ 3-Way to split the pickups....
Awesome. Great demo thanks
Will be getting this next month and cant wait. Working on my first ambient solo album and i do believe this will be the best guitar for it.
You are gonna love it. Congrats!!
That is an awesome sounding guitar. Great find. Also, great video as usual!
+Charles Nottingham It really is a great baritone. I am looking forward to releasing next week's video, which will feature it!
Found your channel looking at guitar pedals. Really enjoying your stuff as ambient tones appeal greatly to my ear. I am a bassist at heart, but am currently in a trio with close friends who are married in which I’m playing acoustic... but I’m also wanting to expand our sonic palette by adding some electric guitar. I’ve been subscribing to “That Pedal Show” for some time now and they endorse many effects pedals without sacrificing the instrument’s tone. I hear the same thing in your music and reviews. Looking hard at some higher end delays and reverbs and am very interested in the latest Fender offerings (including The Bends compressor that you use). I love this guitar as well. Thanks for your dedication to your craft.
This is one of the best channels I've found for both reviews and music. Nothing against shredding but it really helps to hear the subtleties. Cheers.
Thanks so much!!!
I bought two SE-277's one curly maple and a black one they are amazing in design and playability
with two I have one in regular B to B and the other for open tinings and partial capo stuff very handy when looping
and being able to switch back and forth within the same piece of music..I think these are exceptional instruments
the P- 90's, the string through bridge, and chambered body really work well together with the baritones register....I love your videos you do a great job promoting ambient music..thank you
First, thanks for letting me know you are liking the channel. It's very encouraging to me! Second - awesome that you have 2 SE-277s! They really are incredible instruments, especially for the price.
Great demo, and the guitar sounds excellent!
Oh Nathan - this thing is pretty sweet!!! If you get a chance to try one out, it's well worth it!
Man your channel is awesome!
Nice guitar review btw!
I got a PRS SE Mark Holcomb, and now i'm considering a SE 277 but i can't decide semi hollow body or solid body ! But definitly need a baritone!
If you are into heavier tones, then the solid body version of the SE 277 might be a better choice with the high output humbuckers and such. But...If you want something different in tone than the Holcomb (and a little funky), then the semi-hollow is pretty darn cool!
Hi Bill,
Do you prefer the soapbar or the solid body baritone? Which has the best playability and tone?
Thanks for your videos
Bill, you convinced me to buy one of these! Loved your demo, and indeed all your other ambient guitar stuff.
I have a question: did you need to get the guitar set up for those 12 gauge strings, or did you just put them on? Mine came with 14 gauge and I'm considering dropping to 12 or 13.
You can just put them on; should be fine.
wow i was just thinking about exactly this guitar for ambient work two days ago after watching rob chapman review it. and boom here this shows up. Great review!
+SirMunkz Glad you liked the review. I've been using it for some ambient recordings, and it's working really well, especially with delays and reverbs. I should have mentioned this on the video too: the guitar was setup perfectly and plays like butter!
+Chords Of Orion Dad and mom can play jazz, blues or country with it and the kids can play death metal with it. Fun for the whole family.
+orlock20 Right on! It's that versatile!
Love it! The "SE" logo design on the head stock does not seem in keeping with such a beautiful guitar but over all it looks fantastic to me.
Always love hearing your PRS SE 277! I just got my first PRS (PRS SE Santana) last week and I love it! I'm curious if you do any mods or upgrades to your SE's? I did a good fret job (level, crown and polish) and ordered some metric CTS pots and a nice big black bumble bee clone PIO tone cap, Tusq XL nut and will install some already had SwitchCraft 3 way switch and jack from the ol parts drawer! In your opinion Bill, do I need to do any of these mods or are the SE guitars good enough to leave as is? Like I said, I love it already but I always like installing the above in my guitars.
Mine are all stock at the moment. They work great for me!
Love the demo, and I love my SE277 solid body, as well.
Excellent! I am seriously thinking about getting the solid body before they disappear!
The pick ups are very precise, if that makes sense. They pick more of your finger movements than any other pick ups. The bridge pick up is very "hot". Gives a lot of gain, before you add any distortion. Pretty awesome, in my book.
jr frumz Sounds great!
man, your voice is soothing
Aleksey Potapchuk he doesn’t need a guitar does he? Haha
Hi Bill, having played both, which of the models did you prefer ie between the semi hollow with soap bar pickups and the solid body with the humbucker pickups that you can split? Did you buy the black grey semi hollow with the soap bar pickups in the end? Thank you
this is everything i want in a guitar from my favorite company. sucha beautiful sounding and looking guitar
+cody thompson It really is!!
I remember saying to a friend i wanted something semi hollow with p90s. And i also wanted a baritone. And i shit you not the next say i got an email from prs announcing this guitar. Its like its fate. I have a jericho guitars fusion 6 baritone. But i need that semi hollow p90 vibe in my life.
cody thompson Ooh. Jericho! If you don't mind me asking, how do you like the Fusion? I keep looking at 'em...
+Chords Of Orion they are absolutly stellar. like all guitars you should get them set up or set them up how you like them. mine had a bad neck pot but i plan on replacing it soon. i really like them alot. the new edge series looks really good with them being bolt on or neck thru. if you happen to get one let em know i sent ya. i tell them i tell people about them so id like for them to know im still spreading the word of awesome guitars.
cody thompson Will do. Thanks!
A really nice demo!! An awesome guitar and for not a whole lot of money!
+Timothy Buss The price is nice for sure!!!
great guitar and playing.
Thanks very much!!
Such a good video, don't know how anyone can down vote this in fairness!
Hi there, thanks for this fantastic review! I'm the very lucky owner of exactly the same guitar, but mine unfortunately has quite some fret buzz on the lower strings, while playing them fretted. I'm planning to do some tweaks on the truss rod and bridge saddles, which will hopefully resolve this for the most part. Speaking from your video, at least your guitar doesn't seem to have this problem?
@@peccotunity some common things like the action needed to be adjusted. A friend helped me with it a little more than a year ago so I don't remember exactly what we changed, I believe I fiddled with the truss rod as well since prs recommended to try that first. But at least nothing worrying 👍 Still love the looks and the beautiful low tones
Great video!! love the way you play!
I was wondering, where is this guitar from?
thanks!
The PRS SE series are made in South Korea I believe - and thanks!
Dang it, man. I think you just convinced me to save up for this instead of the Squier baritone. You're making me wait!
It is pretty sweet, for sure...
Ive got the baritone jazzmaster and id say these guitars sound quite similar but id try both out and see how you like the feel, the jazzmaster is longer scale length than the prs so it might take some etting used to
Contemplating this guitar to add to my praise and worship role in our church's band. See it as a good alternative since we are up-the-wazoo with guitar players. Your review has me convinced. Also want to become more familiar with the ambient guitar voice. I see a role for it in Christian music. I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to picking your brain as I learn to play this wonderful sounding instrument. 👑🎸🎵
i play guitar in my church, although we sing mostly traditional hymns and only use acoustic instruments (piano, guitar and the occasional violin). That being said, my fellow guitarist and I will sometimes combine standard acoustic guitar and acoustic baritone guitar together. Works really well, as long as you think about the arrangement of chords, single notes, etc.
Ok question: I play in a church group and use some ambient Ideas back behind keyboards and such. I found some good settings for my acoustic too thanks to you Sir. I have an old Cort strat style Guitar.....I love the way it plays but not so much the way it sounds. Could I replace Single coils and put in Soap bars like you are using and be ok? I like the' inbetweener' sound.
That's a good question. I have never replaced pickups on a Strat style guitar. Maybe someone else can chime in?
Anyone know where I could find plans for a PRS SE 277 semi-hollow as I want to build one.
I have a solid body one and mostly use the single coil tap (middle position) but have been thinking about the soapbar version. Do the soapbars sound like the single coil?
Nice video and nice guitar! I was curious what string guage are u using on this guitar?
For the SE-277 I use D'Addario XL157, which is .014 - .068. Thanks!!
I'm debating between getting this model versus the solid body with humbuckers. I'm curious ... what is your experience with the soap bar pickups, semi-hollow body and noise or hum? I think I'd rather have this version, but not if I'm going to have to fight with noise or hum.
I love the guitar, however the pickups are noisy when the pickup selector is set to bridge or neck only. In the middle position, it's like having a big humbucker so its pretty quiet.
If noise is a concern, then the humbucker solidbody is the way to go...
OK.....I'm a few years behind on this. Local dealer has one in NOS condition for$850 .In NJ) Not a bargain but not a rip off. I bought it, now to learn how to play it! (I play keys with pedals)
Nice!
i played that guitar today and I have to have it.
That's what I said to the black version. Sounds beautiful. Either version... Get one ASAP.
probably a dumb question... but, does it have to be tuned B to b? Why not standard E to e?
I love the way it sounds, I'm just not very familiar with baritone guitars. I'd love some feedback. Thanks!
No - a baritone guitar can be tuned in other ways too, such as A to A. The B to B tuning is probably the most common though. It is possible to tune a baritone up to standard pitch, but you would need to replace the strings with lighter gauges. I did a little poking around and discovered a good Wikipedia article on baritones that you may find of use: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baritone_guitar. All the best!!
What are you using for the swells near the end? Sounds amazing.
Darrell Hill it's the alligator volume pedal, I think
Id hate to have to re-memorize the notes on the fretboard. Low F would be on the 6th fret where A flat should be
Do you still have it. Ive been looking for one !
I love the sound of those pickups.....just not ready to leap to Baritone. do they make a standard guitar set up the same way?
I am not seeing one that is the same as the baritone: www.prsguitars.com/products/se/
I going to check into the option 0f getting one custom made or maybe just make the leap to baritone
I bought Mine today, Same model. I hope i didnt make a mistake, i feel kind of bad for spending so many money for something i dont even know wether it Sounds good and its useful. hopefully its no disappointment...
Guitar sounds great, and I`ll guess looks good if you like the flame like look, . its just to red for me.
Black stain version with black pickups may float your boat. Sounds the same, looks killer.
THANKS
Trying so hard to find one of these guitars for sale. Anyone have one they’re hoping to sell?
What is your opinion on the solid body SE277? It seems to have more options for pickup settings. Is it the hollow body that makes the difference for you?
I like the solid body (did a review of it too), but the pickups are too high gain for me. When I play it, I always reduce the volume control to about 80% to get things back under control. As far as semi-hollow bodies go, that has definitely become my preference over the last 15 years or so. I really like the mid-range tones that they produce and also the lower weight.
Thanks! That really helps as I am thinking about buying one. The tip on the gain is especially helpful. Love your music btw.
Each demo I've heard of these, it sounds like the strings are very slack and "plummy" sounding. Would you suggest heavier strings?
That's a good question. I am running Elixir baritone strings (12-16-22-38-52-68). To me they don't feel slack, but I get what you are saying and it should be possible to run a heavier set for a more snappy tone. For example, my acoustic baritone takes the acoustic Elixir baritone set (16-22-30-47-59-70). I suppose you could put together a custom electric set of the same gauges. Might take a little tweak of the neck relief to compensate for the heavier tension.
I bought this guitar as well and just like in this video, mine has no PRS logo on the headstock. just "SE 277". is this something PRS did upon the first batch of production if this guitar?
Looks like they changed it for 2017...
PRS states that this model is made in Korea
Jordan Sitzer That is correct. It is clearly stated on the back of the headstock. If you are not familiar with the SE line, you may want to check out this article: www.guitarplayer.com/gear/1012/us-made-prs-vs-korean-prs-whats-the-difference/58128
So we just install normal electric strings on this and tune down a fourth to BEADF#B ?
Nope it comes with baritone scale strings dude!
Bill does it come tuned that way if you buy it from Sweetwater?
Yes - BEADF#B is how it comes tuned.
@@chordsoforion Thank you! they still sell it but its Out of Stock :(
Hello there... just passing by to say you’re f. Awesome! Cheers :)
Thanks!!
Bill do you recommend the hollow body for tone for ambient?
It all depends on what tone YOU are looking for. There is no specific "ambient" tone. If you like P90 pickups, then this is a great choice for a baritone. If you are into higher gain humbuckers, then the solid body version of the SE277 is the one for you.
@@chordsoforion thanks!! :) Actually I've been using my Jackson DR-6 tuned to D Standard for some songs... I like the lower tunings
Can you tell what’s the weight of this guitar?Thank you
I have not weighed the guitar, but the semi-hollow is definitely lighter than the solid body. I find it very comfortable to play with a strap while standing.
I am miffed that no one in my country sells this guitar in any colour except black.
Fair amount of delay
holy crap at 7:45 you made that baby sound like a violin!!!😭😐😄😱
I gotta tell ya, the SE277 does volume swells really well!
Yes he may be chilled but i sense the metal is string in this one
He’s said before that he doesn’t play that kind of music.
Would love to find a good quality used one of these - rare as hen's teeth
idk why but you remind me of Thom Yorke.
+aziz alali interesting... i definitely don't have his singing voice! :-)
Chords Of Orion ya it's not the voice, I think it's the shape of your face.
+aziz alali One night stand, there you go.
I M FROM BRAZIL. FROM BAHIA. THANKS
Welcome!!
It sounds like ambient sonic fecies. PRS had a good thing going with the SE Custom 22 Semi Hollow P90's and discontinued it when they realized it was gonna outsell all their other models combined. History repeats itself just like when Les Paul Juniors and Specials were Gibson's cash cows in the 1950's. A stupid business decision Mr.Smith.
