    Mr. Rucker, now, you're not the only one that's pumped to tackle the 10EE lathe project. I too am pumped for you. Can't wait for it to fruition. I love watching your videos. You always produce great work. There's no doubt in my mind that it'll look like it just I left the factory when you're done with the restoration. God bless you sir.

    That's not a disease, it's a natural need. Your shop still has space to take several steps in a straight line, so it needs more machines. Just keep them coming:o)

    Hey Keith,
    Sometimes you have to jump when the machine is available for the right price. Now it's in out of the weather, not deteriorating, and when you have time you can work on it.
    I look forward to watching all of your restoration videos.
    Thanks

    While I will never profess to be on the same level as you or any of the UA-cam machinists, I will say that I believe we are "cut from similar cloth". I am restoring an Atlas 10F to "better than new" condition; sent the bed out to be reground etc. I profoundly respect your taking on this challenge and hope that I can, later in life find a similar Monarch project. Looking forward to the series. Cheers Kieth!!!

    WOW! 5 lathes in a 1-man shop. 3 Monarch's, a Le Blonde, and another that no one noticed - a wood lathe sitting to the left of the 10-EE in the wood shop. You will need to grow extra arms to work them all, Keith! Glad to meet you at the Bar-Z. Jon

    Great score Keith! Those 10ee's are sweet lathes and well built. Gill rebuilt his and got it in the same condition you found yours, if your looking for some tips give him a buzz. Good tooling scores too!

      Abom79 I don't think it's worthwhile restoring that power drive, with so many modern alternatives available, unless the goal is authentic restoration.

      I always wanted a 10EE. I got a Hendey 12x30 12 speed instead. Ordered August 1942 in a lot of over 200 Hendeys and delivered to the military April 1943. Came with a 5hp instead of a 3hp motor. I could do a face off against your Monarch Adam. Thanks Keith for sharing your awesome dream score. Here is a pic of the NASA Glenn Research Center May 25, 1945. Notice the Hendey 18 speed in the fore and Lodge and Shipley lathes behind it. See all the 10EE lathes on the right? There is work still chucked in the front 10EE. archive.org/details/C-1945-10393

    Hi Keith
    What a splendid find !!! A real luck we call it.
    Been following some of these re-furbished ones and have them pics as dream Machines in my archived folders.
    'Tis obvious we would never be able to acquire one down here, but that don't stop us from admiring a truly impeccable lathe.
    U are definitely the right man for the Job and we would love to see You get crackin' with refurbishing this superb Machine sooner rather than later !!!
    All the best and good luck with bringing her back to life.

    Your shop is getting very interesting. I myself have a nice 10ee (1967 square dial), a really nice Monarch K16 (1963) , and a 1943 Monarch model CU that is still in pretty nice shape for its age. The guys and gals at Monarch are great to work with. I was able to get owners manuals for each of my machines along with the original build sheet that shows how the machine was ordered and who and where the machine was originally sent for $75.00. I look forward to the restorations. Thanks

    That 10EE should jump the queue to be the next project. You have already have a big lathe for big jobs, and in the same way the most used micrometers are 0-1" and 1-2", a small lathe will be your most used lathe too. As you know turning little stuff on a big lathe has its "inconveniences"..

    • @TheMetalButcher
      @TheMetalButcher 7 років тому +1

      I'd do the 28" Next. The difference between a 16 and 12" lathe for the small stuff isn't huge. The difference between a 12 and 28 for the big stuff....

    • @VintageMachinery

    I have the same "sickness". I don't have the space to acquire any more machines, though. My wife isn't a fan, either. I'm not a machinist, so these are "things I don't need" ( exact quote from her ). She should be glad that at least I'm not spending the money on booze or strip clubs. It's great that you saved an older machine from the scrapper. That will make a great restoration series. Cheers, Jeff

    Congratulations Keith on the Double E. I commend you for saving it from the scrap heap. At some point the supply of these machines is going to end and each one that can be preserved is worth the effort. I know that you will enjoy using it. I spent several years working on a Hardinge HLV-H which while being quite a different lathe than the 10EE was designed and made with the same kind of excellence in mind. There is a difference that is so obvious when working on many of these classic toolroom lathes and now you will have that possibility in your shop. If anyone can bring this machine back it is you.

    On the subject of embarrassing prices paid for machines: I paid $308 for my B&S 2G auto screw machine (still needs restoration; looks like WW2 production for the Navy), and then spent $1,200 buying a trailer to bring it home! :)

    Keith I would not worry about adopting stray lathes, way more practical than stray cats. Barring any unforeseen show stoppers that little pile of scrap can be not only a sweet lathe for your shop but an investment. Every hour you put into it is like stuffing money into a safe deposit box for later, but we all know if it comes out like you envision it is going nowhere, might as well just bolt it down right now, I'm sure it is destined to be a permanent exhibit in the Rucker Wayward Machine Tool Museum.

    • @johnreed1580
      @johnreed1580 7 років тому

      If you have been to the vet lately, you will know that it is cheaper to adopt a lathe and in ten years it wont be in a box in the back yard like my precious kittys. (I will still always have cats though)

    After a little poking on the web I found the schematic for that lathe. The drive really isn't very complicated, so unless there is some fried part that is hard to replace, it should be pretty simple to get it working again. I suspect you are right that it is likely a problem with brushes or maybe a broken wire. If the drive is dead it shouldn't be too hard to find a modern DC drive for the main motor, but that leaves you with a brushed motor, which might take some maint from time to time.

  • @TheAyrCaveShop

    Keith, That's an awesome score! I've never seen one in person, not to many here on the west coast. Sure looks good for sitting outdoors for 2 years, must has been well oiled. Can't wait to see the restore. Consider a industrial or commercial VFD and matching motor that can can provide "constant torque" (full HP at zero speed) low cost VFD and motors can't do that. Worth the extra cost on a quality machine like the 10EE.
    Enjoy it "I 'm Jealous",
    Dean

    I would love to have a pure Monarch lathe shop. at the moment my shop has 3 lathes of different branding and they each operate differently and when you're in a hurry and jumping from each machine you have to keep in mind which machine and operation you are on. Wow Keith, what a score! That Monarch is a sweet little machine and it doesn't look all that bad to me. Those Kalamazoo saws appear to be 8"x16", the same exact saw that I have. Those are very good machines when tuned right and they have quite a bit of weight to them. I have mechanically restored mine and I can tell you it will make very accurate cuts repeatedly, usually within .0015 of square. Most parts are still available through Clausing as I have bought several for mine but, they are pricey. Mine still has the original paper instruction sheet glued on the inside of the wheel cover that reads Kalamazoo tank and silo corporation which I think is neat. I think we both need to find a good doctor to cure old iron deficiency because there is no way I could walk away from a deal like that! Great video Keith and congratulations!!

    Pretty interesting machine.Good for you.Your probably the envy of many of your viewers.keep going and building on what you have.I hope your wife understands.The support of them is critical.My wife lets me buy what I want,but thankfully for her I'm out of space.Great stuff from the wartime years..Brings to mind "Million Dollar point"in the South Pacific.Thanks

    lol Kieth , I used the bet and legs off one of those bandsaws you showed as the stand for my little Optimum Optiturn TU2004V lathe I have , I do have some other parts I removed from it , I didn't get the whole machine as I was given the leftover bits when a friend used some of the parts to make another machine , I think there is a device like the Hydraulic damper you mentioned
