I tried this look once....once. My take on it was this: NOT taking any "style rules" into consideration, this only really looks good if you're thin, or maybe just a little muscular. I had a little bit of a gut at the time, and I felt like the vest just accentuated it. Made my torso look too big and my arms too small. I've recompositioned my build quite a bit so it might look better these days, but I think you're right and you should always have a jacket with you. That way, if you look great in a vest, you can take the jacket off, but you didn''t show up incomplete.
I find the opposite to be true. As a bigger guy, a jacket just makes me look insanely fat. A vest covers where my pants and my belly meet instead of showing that awkward line that accentuates my fat belly. I go from looking like a fat guy who cant dress himself to looking like a college professor from just putting on the vest.
@@TurkeyShaman LOL, that's funny, because I started wearing jackets specifically for the slimming effect they had on me, and I was disappointed that a vest didn't do the same thing for me. HOWEVER...it's also possible that I wasn't wearing the right fit for a vest at the time. I haven't always known how to dress right lol. That having been said, right after I left that first comment, I ended up on a video where the creator was dressed in a vest and tie, and I think that the vest look says "Yes, I respect formality, but I'm also here to WORK."
@@jasonvoorhees895 Although I agree with you that jackets will hide the stomach better, I think it's a great option for warmer summer days. I find vests are much more breathable and they can hide the excess fat better than a normal dress shirt and pants especially where they both meet.
I LOVE the vest style. Really like to wear it in semi-formal places. In formal places I, of course, wear a jacket.
Vests are stylish AF, and can create a whole other look than with a jacket.
I love wearing a vest. As a teacher, wearing a sports jacket or a suit is considered a bit too shocking to the culture, but vests feel ok. I still wear a suit sometimes, but I actually think I like vests more. You totally can pull it off if you want.
A vest is fine, I work in a relatively hot environment so I use it to look dapper without overheating. I never wear a belt with it though.
I never thought much about wearing my vest without my jacket, until this past weekend at my wife's Birthday dinner. I had removed my jacket and rolled up my sleeves and I must have killed the look because I was getting so many complements on my rolled up shirt, vest and tie combo. The attention was definitely noticeable. I ordered 2 more vest yesterday and will use that combo more often. Thank you Antonio, I truly look forward to your videos and advise on all my outfits.
Now, there is a type of vests out there which is designed to be worn without a jacket. Main difference being the back fabric and the front fabric are the same-as opposed to suit vests which come with a thin silk type of fabric on the rear to keep them from being too bulky under the jacket. If you wear one of these standalone, jacket-replacement vests combined with a good shirt this would definitely be a look a lot of men can pull off. What do you guys think?
I love how clear and precise these short videos get the point across! You understand that there is no real requirement for length of videos nor how much content a youtuber needs to "cover" per video! And I love it! Great job Antonio! I can hardly wait for your next video!
Really enjoying the addition of these short segments. I really love the vest look and have incorporated it into my Sunday church wear. Some days I go with the jacket over it and others I don’t. It depends on factors like the weather, how long I’m going to be in service and whether or not I’m really feeling the look without the jacket.
Hey Antonio I heard you for sure, regarding the vest and its purpose. However, I am located in the tropics my friend (JAMAICA) therefore I can't always wear the full compliment (with the jacket) the vest and tie looks fine for me... Btw, your content is top class....
Awsome video
Love these compact video
The classic example of
Good things come in small packages
The big thing you mustn’t do is wear a waistcoat (“vest”) with a belt as you’ve pictured here - it breaks the continuity between waistcoat and trousers. Either wear braces (“suspenders”) or fitted trousers if you’re wearing one!
Thank you!
I was about to ask if suspenders can go with vests and the shirt and tie, because I feel like vests and belts do not go together
Yes, it's my go to look in spring/ summer. BUT it depends on the vest too.
Absolutely YES, I danced in it all the time BC19 (Before Covid-19). The shirt was a short sleeved shirt to not get too warm and increase perspiration. Used with both tie and bowties.
If you don't wanna get a "mufin top" either use high waist pants and if needed suspenders to hold them up. Another option is to get a longer waistcoat.
you can opt for a casual vest, knitted ones that can be regarded as sleeveless sweaters or sleeveless cardigans if they have buttons. If you can pull off a tie with a sweater, then you can with those alternatives without looking as formal as with the waistcoats that requires a jacket. However the tie has to be casual as well
I don't dress up much, but when I do, the vest with no jacket is my go-to look.
As a bigger guy i wear suspenders and Jackets sometimes does not fit me well (buys from rack) so the vest is always my go to.
In a formal setting. I often wear an odd vest with a tie and it works beautifully. Colors must compliment each other, though.
The waistcoat and tie look (especially if combined with rolled up shirt sleeves) looks like the jacket has been taken off because the person is working hard and as such, gives an energetic impression to the wearer. Although one could wear it badly and completely ruin that impression.
Wearing a waistcoat, shirt and tie with no jacket, in my experience, tends to create one of two looks. Either like some sort of hipster (depending on what it is worn with, e.g. skinny jeans), which is not my thing, or it looks like somebody wearing a jacket, who has temporarily taken it off.
The second appearance can be very beneficial, as it gives a lot more energy to somebody's appearance, in a way that just a shirt and tie (which has become so commonplace) does not.
That's a very intriguing topic of discussion. I think it depends on the situation - like you said - but also the physique of the person wearing it.
In my opinion, thin or well-built men can wear a vest without a jacket.
But in heavier men, the jacket really builds up the shoulders to sort of evens the physique rather than have a wider belly and hip and slimmer shoulders.
Besides, wearing a vest that contrasts the colour of the shirt would also make the arms look bigger which is great for the well-built or thin men, but it won't look that good on heavier men with big arms.
It's a yes for me. But if it meant to be properly formal, the jacket must be worn. Very much determined by local custom too.
Of course Antonio! I use it but with no tie. The tie with the vest when used without the jacket is what looks a little awkward but vest are very versatile when used with no tie!
I wear a tie and vest all the time for day to day things lol
Love the short videos
Bartenders and other staff often only wear vests because it is more practical and easier to work in than a jacket. This can be combined with a bowtie or necktie.
Nice and short that answered my curiosity too
Yes
I dont normally like videos, but ahhh. You provided me with the insight that I needed. Figured I'd throw a comment as well to help feed the algorithm machine.
Yes because in my opinion a vest would look great with the shirt 👔 , tie and trousers go great with the jacket and without the jacket because in my honest opinion they’re great to do it because it’s an opportunity to wear the styles
I was literally thinking about this today.. You are awesome.
I loved Simon's character Patrick Jane in the Mentalist. He had a jacket but wore a vest and shirt with a few bottoms opened.
Good Antonio, liking this short, concise videos, keep experimenting and doing something new.
Yes. It's a cooler style, both meanings. Standing outside at funerals is hot work in the Southeastern US.
Yeah, a lot of people here in the comments going "noooo, you should ALWAYS wear a jacket" and I'm just wondering where these fuckers live where always wearing a jacket is even tolerable, let alone desirable. Unless it's a formal occasion, I'm wearing a god damn sleeveless T-shirt.
I think it depends on the vest. A vest like AC has on (which pairs with a suit) isn't a good look, IMHO. But Western-style vests (typically longer and squared-off at the bottom) can take the place of a sports jacket for many casual and some semi-formal occasions.
At the office, in a hot day, it's great to just use a vest without a jacket. It looks a bit more formal that just the shirt. Of course is not as formal as using it with the jacket.
Plus if you have two dresses each one with a vest you'll have six different combinations.
I AM new and thank you for the welcome and info. I tend to get hung up on weather I should wear the vest with jacket or no veat and wear jacket. ...also, what if I want to leave the neck button off? Do I wear no tie? Or no vest?
As long as I respect the effort and the time you spend on,I think horizontal long videos were way better Antonio, this series are good but classic videos are just better
vest are use as booster for jacket for insulation. It why it suit vest is rarely worn alone back in the day.
Vest and tie look good.
Well, the covering of the waistband rule is only really applicable for black tie and white tie. Other than that for daywear, you’d never have to find it compulsory to cover your waistband. If you’re considering a tie and a vest look, I suggest just ditching the vest entirely, and going for just the jacket.
Especially a sweater vest with shirt, tie and no jacket. Im looking at some Merino wool button up vests.
Thanks for the video!. I will give my opinion on this subject. I work in the dutch politics. And always listen to my body temperature. That i mean that if i have it too warm I take out the jacket and leave the vest on. Especially in these cold days i like top wear a vest ( 3 piece) because it's colder. And when im in a warmer or less formal place, l take the jacket off. Again I always listen to my body temperature and calibrate with the environment. know yourself, know your mission and social operational environment.
Your second jacket is absolutely excellent! I love wearing the vest even without tie, why not it's stylish... what you think?
In tropical climates, should be considered
Can you pull off a vest and tie without a jacket? You can, if you can pull off a shirt and tie without a jacket. The vest just adds to your style level, not to the formality level.
Agree. Just a 3 Pieced is more formal than a 2 Pieced. But for me I like wear only vest, pants and tie too.
Hello Antonio, new subscriber here. Was just wondering if you could suggest a color for the tie if you’re on a dark blue plaid suit?
I’m going to Las Vegas for my 21st birthday and we are having a nice dinner. Would the vest suffice? I’m assuming the dinner will be a bit more formal.
Create some videos on this Antonio. Honestly, let's have this debate as I've been wondering the same thing including the following: What about wearing a vest & tie only without a jacket in semi-formal events including at healthcare administrative work environments such as where I work at.
On another note, when I pick my outfit to wear that night for the following work day, I always think in my head 🗣️, "what would Antonio say about this combo..."?
Peace ✌️ brother.
This color combo is killing me
Woo HOO just what I wanted👍🏾👌🏾
It works as a casual look.
Actually, a vest & bow tie is my go-to daily wear. As a chiropractor, I'm looking to keep my style professional, but I have to be able to move in what I'm wearing to see patients. I find the vest (with lapels) hits that note for me, yet with my shirt sleeves rolled up, I still look casual and relatable. In a more professional setting where I'm presenting or at a conference, the jacket goes on.
Good with jeans and a button down. Sometimes add loose tie with top shirt button undone.
I think that, unless it's a very classy event, you'll get away with it. In my opinion, the majority of men are about as uncertain about its propriety as we are so if you wear it with confidence, they'll automatically assume that it's proper and styilish and you'll get compliments instead of silent judgement.
Christmas is coming up and I typically get dressed up for work. I usually wear a shirt tie and vest only (mostly black vest and tie with a white shirt, or if i want color a sliver tie) and the only "jacket" i wear is my overcoat, once inside I roll up the sleeves a quarter up my arm, and I think that works. Anyone can help if I'm doing it wrong?
Awesome!!
What about a shirt and tie with the sleeves rolled up? I've seen some guys pull it of, even with a bow tie... I kind off like the look, not sure though...
Every day.
A vest and tie is fine when sitting at a desk or in your office. To me , a man will wear a vest and tie to feel more comfortable. But always wear the jacket with the three piece suit.
I always wear a jacket with a vest, it just seems out of place without one. On the other hand I can see times when I get up from my desk for one reason or another and may not put on my jacket. I would not go to someone's office without the jacket though.
What about knitted vest? Like a jumper without sleeves.
Antonio, seeing as you are a fan of the flannel daddy over at Garrand Thumb could we expect a plaid collab anytime in the future?
These short videos reminds me of those micro machines commercials from the 1980's lol happy holidays RMRS
I'll take it as a compliment. You don't get those commercials anymore. 😎
If you wear a vest instead of the jacket, you become chandler bing, from the early seasons.
I see that i like walking around with the suit unbottoned with a vest but i always have it buttoned up without one i think vest is great with a jacket
I thought vest were invented to keep the body warm when doing outside activities.
Its also a reason.
The Vest is meant to work as a warm keeper, but also to cover jr waistband and also to hold the tie in place like a tiebar does. So a very usefull Item for closet!
A no go however is to wear the vest with a belt.
No belt with a vest ! Unless you're a 1930's gangster😉
But I look good with even just a vest, without a jacket. Informal office setting (ah before the pandemic hahaha).
I always thought a solo vest was a good look for people with a skinnier figure, I haven't seen any other figures wear them.
I stick with jacket and vest.
If you work at wall street it’s fine.
No jacket no tie no vest
Not really my style without a jacket so I will stay with no vest, suit jacket without vest, or vest with suit jacket.
a resounding NO!
Turn to God and Jesus before its too late ✝️❤️
If you are lean, and have a big chest you could pull it off
😀🇬🇧
Short videos, under 60s'... are you planning to go on tiktok soon?
No, while in the office its fine, but if you’re meeting a customer, or out and about(even socially) you need a jacket! Otherwise its not a complete outfit.
I just worry people would see you as a “hipster.”
Dislike the vest w/o jacket. Trying too hard to be stylish
well if you want to look like a waiter or a bellboy...
First
You lost some weight
Hi
Yes
Should men wear a vest without a jacket? Yes or No?
yes as long as there's no belt. though I wouldn't recommend a belt with any jacket and vest combination
You are wearing a vest..beautiful...now where is your jacket?.. put it on...PEACE
Yes, as long as men is in his own turf.
When you know what you are doing a vest without a jacket can look amazing and set you apart from everyone else.
Absolutely. I find the vest to be so much more visually interesting while a suit jacket is just "same from head to toe".
