Nous avons besoin de vous, nous sommes fan de vos aventures, nous sommes de tout cœur avec vous ! Merci pour le partage et joyeux anniversaire encore à Kieran, quelle chance d'avoir a ses cotés une si telle créature de rêve !
Happy birthday Kieran! And ... talk to each other about what's not working properly on the boat!. We do this at home: "The sandwich toaster is doing this weird thing - make sure to switch it off here" or "the washing machine isn't doing this properly - you have to hold the switch like this for five seconds to make it go". :) It's especially important in these strange times where supply chains are disrupted and spare / replacement parts are hard to come by.
glad you were sensible and had a backup plan - another vlog has a big cat in the med being smashed on the rocks because he decided to sail in rather than anchor and get assistance - well done
If your got sails your got power... Make a paddle wheel to sit in the water and run through your alternator. To easy..... Old teacher of mine made us all look out side the box. Mother nature can change a life very fast.... Take care and all the best on the voyage.... I hope nature shows some amazing things for you...
You have to get the wind in from behind in an slightly angle to avoid boat wobbling. So the boat have pressure at one side only. This is much more stable sailing.
Hey there’s a starter for a yanmar 3ym30 called a JAS (Oceania) called a SNJ402GQ, it’s a 12 volt 1.2kw 11tooth and it’s available a lot of places could be flown in , it’s cheaper than a hitachi which is the original and the only difference is .2 kw but works fine . Cost in Australia was about $300 for a new one , problem is the heat exchanger needs to come off for easy access but it’s not difficult looks harder than it is . John
We are so happy to hear that everything went well! Rest now, sleep, chill, and come back to us in great shape! We need you, we are a fan of your adventures, we are wholeheartedly with you! Thank you for sharing and happy birthday again to Kieran, how lucky to have such a dream creature by his side!
Most cruisers remember to store enough filters and fluids for a passage, but a few experienced ones store vacuum packed spares which you WILL eventually need, alternator/charge controller, starter, raw water pump, remote starter jump switch, spare injectors, fuel lift pump. These cruisers don't get stuck for months in a remote anchorage trying to Fedex in parts, they just swap and next time in a city rebuild the used spares, ready for next time...and there will be a next time. Having learned the hard way from lightning strikes on my heavily electric dependant boat, I added spare solar charge controllers, 2 spare inverters and even a duplicate induction cooktop I use for my principal cooking.
wow !! what an adventure you've shared , it really gave us the feel of what it must be , being on a sail boat in the middle of the ocean, the lack of sleep , the big wave, the sail boat rocking from side to side . Poor Isabelle being sea sick and still cooking with that beauty of her 😍
Sailing through Paradise, with good wind and beautiful blue water, with a stunning and loving lady who celebrates your birthday with Vegemite and pasta, and you're whinging about a little lost sleep? Mostly kidding, Kieran. Happy Birthday!
I love the compassion and empathy you show each other in these moments to care for your partner..Obviously on a boat with 2 rock stars it's a special moment to construct these core value birthday moments...but you do. Thanks for reminding the mainlander's to remember the simple things and moments ❤️
Niiiiiice ride guys‼️‼️ As to seeing how big the waves are, those of us who have been at sea can seeds quite easily when you are in a trough and the horizon disappears and we see only sky.🙂🤪🌞✨👏
We just did our first 24 hour passage. Wasn’t as intense as this situation. 😱 But we sure got a taste! ⛵️ Thanks for posting the TRUTHS about this lifestyle
Happy Birthday. Starter motors live down there in dark and constant wet/damp environment close the bilges. And as we do maintenance on other things on deck, we should do so with Mr Starter-motor also and the starter circuit.Best marine ignition system is Key on and off for power and a separate push to start marine grade starter button. Specially on a nice sunny day, take it out, clean it, lube the bendix, some gear grease on the ring gear is a bonus. Let it bake in the sun and dry out. Put it back. A starter motor that is nursed like this will outlast the engine.
Happy Birthday to Kieran! Sailing around the world with a beautiful woman seeing the most beautiful places I've ever seen is certainly living the dream only a few will ever experience!
Happy belated birthday Kieran!!! It's wonderful to know that you and Isabelle made it safely to Fiji and you got rested up after the long sail. Thanks again so much for taking us all along for the trip. You manage to overcome the many challenges put before you with courage and a real fighting spirit. You guys are totally awesome and true legends in my books. Take care and God Bless you both. Cheers, Christopher.
Sheesh! Well, you made it into a protected anchorage, and at least the starter motor problem is a contained one! Happy 31st Kieran. Hope you slept well after getting those lines out!
Thanks for a great vid. I never understood why no sailors ever have a back up outboard or even a spot to attach the dingy motor. Lucky you are near civilisation. You need some crew to allow you to sleep, let me know when I should come aboard so you can sleep...sounds like you need to delegate more Captain.
Hey great video we know how you feel about the sea it’s tiring and wears you down sometimes we can see you’re tired If you don’t marry that girl and have six kids there’s something wring with your head
Wow, I didn’t know John Deere made offshore gear.LOL. I think my uncle (a farmer in Iowa ) has the same rain gear. Also I read an article written by a former Coast Guard person about the best colors to ware if you go overboard to be seen by searchers. They said that the Hi-vis glow stick is the easiest to see and jumps out from a long distance.
A little silicon spray in the key hole now & again , Not CRC , Did you try the screw driver trick across both terminals on the S motor ? 2 days R&R will go down well . Well done .
Thanks for being real and showing emotion on your birthday. Most yachties won’t allow themselves to be filmed when they’re not at their peak. Keep it up. You’re both wonderful. Good content, good camera work and pretty lady.
Happy belated Birthday Kieran! 🧶🎉🍧🎂🥂🎁🎆 I'm glad I was able to contribute to the Merewether vernacular. I hadn't noticed until this episode the "glowstick" outfit is from John Deere, nice touch! When lubricating that key switch avoid using oils; instead use a dry lubricant like graphite. Oils attract substances such as salt and draw it into the lock mechanism. Eventually the oil evaporates and the mechanism is worse off than it started. Unless there are special marine key switches made from brass or stainless the typical key switch is made of low grade steel that will be adversely affected by the Marine environment. You should consider replacing the key switch or at least procuring a spare. Keep up the great videos and above all STAY SAFE! ⛵❤️😷
Hard going sailing that sort of distance with only 2 to man the boat at all times maybe could do with extra crew for the larger crossings in the future so yous arent taking to much out of yourself. Great job getting there after the engine failure of the starter hope you cna get a repalcement starter easy enoigh in Fiji it looks a lovely country
Happy birthday mate as you say learning experience, should have done this should have done that eh a simple thing like the ignition not returning and burning out the motor, you think they would have a cut off after 30 seconds or so , cheers and enjoy Fiji.
Ha den äran på födelsedagen i efterskott. (Translate happy b day.) Keep the spinnaker pole up on the opposite side from genoa or foresail. This stabilize the boat slightly in rough swells. Preferably set sails if u can on wing on wing. The boats gets sturdier. And set on reef on main. While foresail or Genoa is full swing. Just some of the tip I could give. Didn’t know that mereweather was a Swedish flagged boat. So therefor I say. God fortsatt segling jorden runt. Hälsningar från Kungälv, Sverige. /fair winds
Tack så mycket! Thank you for the tip, we do this when the wind allows us to. No she is Australian. The Swedish flag is just to represent my other half on the boat, Isabelle. All the best to you
Happy belated Birthday Kieran. Not the most memorable of birthday’s for you but at least you got your Vegemite 😂 Almost got to your destination unscathed but so unfortunate with the starter motor burning out. A new experience for you both but the lads did a fantastic job getting you anchored. Hope you get things sorted 👍
A burned up starter is a terrible birthday present. Im glad you made it there safely. Im a bit jealous as I run around my daily routine in a winter jacket all day lol. See you next week
Happy birthday k i e r a n and hello Isabella. Thank you for showing us another s a i l i n g episode. Those big waves come in loud and clear and I can visualize them in my mind even more so. Captivating. Has always keep your eyes peeled for those ET spaceships in the sea or skies.
See it from the happy side. Now you can make a video on how to renovate the motor. In case of emergency cant you use the small outboard motor some how?
Every time I see vegimite I'm reminded that of all the foods in the world thats one I haven't had. We have stores with virtually every food in the world in California because everyone is here, so I have no excuse. The smoky engine was worrisome, but, a starter means not a damaged engine so that's good. Hopefully no gear damage.
A squirt of WD 40 into the key slot would of most likely freed it up. WD 40 won't hurt electrical or cause it to short out. We used to spray the points in the distributor when moisture would get into the points and the engine wouldn't start. I put a squirt in all my locks and it works well to keep them from rusting in salt water conditions.
Well done guys... Your videos are outstanding! You could always use your dinghy with outboard tied up along side starboard or port aft to help in emergency if weather conditions permit. Keep up the great storytelling. I love Fuji.
Once you smell a hot/burnt starter motor you never forget that smell. Glad you guys made it to safe harbor. If you learn from your mistakes, they become lessons. Good on you for knowing that. Each of you has a partner you can depend on. Cherish that.
Happy Birthday. Couple things, starters are usually able to be rebuilt and often fail so a spare is not out of mind. There are a couple of sketchy but time honoured ways to start a diesel with no ignition. See if someone will show you. There were diesels long before electric starters.
Have you considered bringing two more crew members along during long passages?. Then you would have more sleep and rest time. Otherwise, long passages become an endurance test and far less pleasant.
Happy belated birthday Kieran - not the best way to finish off a sail but at least you got there. Hope the Tonga eruption hasn’t affected you - see you next time and stay safe.
Hiya folks well done on your adventures, just a thought you have a outboard motor any chance of utilising it in an emergency? Happy birthday an stay safe 🤠
First, Happy Birthday young man😀. My youngest (son) birthday was on the 8th he turned 42. I am getting old. I wish I had you guys stamina. This crossing sure put some stress on your bodies for sure. That Pasta.Isabelle made looked so good! Hopefully you can get your starter fixed or replaced. Safe sailing my friend get some well deserved rest. Fred in Texas
Happy birthday Kieran! You will always remember this one. I enjoyed Isabella singing to you in Swedish. With the Sea Scouts, we've had to come back into the marina more than once to make a "dead stick" landing on our dock. It does give you the experience of how to sail in tight quarters, one that I wasn't planning on how to learn. Cheers, and take care y'all.
Happy you guys are there safe and whilst we obviously dont see the full reaction etc, but well done on doing it in style given the big challenge you guys had....remember challenges come to instruct, not obstruct...#fairwinds
You touched on two things here, both very familiar to me. Firstly, in a way, your leg to Fiji was maybe too short. I’ve been single-handing for nearly all of my 10,000 miles and my last 2 legs were from Cascais direct Curacao and then on to Panama. What I find is the first 2-3 days are difficult because the doubts and fears of leaving land behind leave me restless and unable to sleep easily. Once beyond that, I’m fine, sleeping mostly in the cockpit but with my senses still attuned to the winds and the waves. Sea time is something quite different to land time and there’s on;y the moment - other than planning routinely around weather forecasts. But then, when betting close to land, everything gets screwed up again because there’s something to crash into and a port to enter - so my sleeping gets screwed up again - and that’s when mistakes can creep in. I think a leg can actually be too short when you sail short-handed. Secondly, just tragic that you both weren’t up on the “new technique” on that starter key but maybe that was brought on by the imperative to enter port on that particular day as well - when you were both not sleeping (and eating well?). Can’t say I’d have decided to motor or not, I wasn’t there after all, but my approach is that if it seems my timing leaves me likely to enter port late in a day then I just slow down and look at the next one instead. Very important when the realities are that ports and marinas can just screw you around totally at the last minute; switch you to port-to docking after you set up to match their instruction of starboard-to - or that change to anchoring the way they demanded. Yes, their island but just “magicing up” 100m of docking line is not easy when you’re short-handed or alone. Also much harder with the stress you already had and that tiredness. But we’ll done you, you got it done.
I always put the Marmite (Vegemite) on the hot toast first because it is easier to spread and then the butter. The heat of the toast blends the two together. Butter first makes it harder to spread the vegemite because it is greasy and skips across the toast.
Happy belated birthday Kieran! Glad you made it safely through a difficult crossing. Question: Could you have used your own tender to tow Mereweather in? I'm sure the Navy tow was prudent especially in view of the unknown reefs but would the tender worked if nothing else was available? All the best! Enjoy Fiji and the Vegemite!
I'm probably stating the obvious, but I take Dramamine (Dimenhydrinate) before going to bed on a long passage and it doesn't only help fantastically with sleep, but also with motion sickness. Forgive me if you already know about this.
If the video looks calm then it must have been pretty bad. It looks pretty intense to me. Feels like you captured the reality of it pretty well - I feel for you guys.

Another winner guys💥☄️ And let me wish the Captain........HAPPY BIRTHDAY ✨ 🎂 ✨ 🎉 ✨ 🎂 ✨ 🎉 🌞
Thank you so much my friend!☺️🙌🏼
Well done Team Merewether

I cooked my starter the same way, but at night. Had to learn to anchor under sail. Lesson you learn once!
Our wives are our most wonderful birthday present. You are in our prayers. You seem to be very loving and supportive together.
Great video. Big picture, you are sailing the South Pacific with a goddess. What is a starter? Nothing really. Happy Birthday!
Thank you Alejandro!
Happy Birthday! Vegemite is an acquired taste, one which I will probably never acquire. Maybe a nice Islay scotch? Cheers! Stay safe!
Well done for sticking it out and getting sorted. what a shame that it was a rusty key that caused all your problems! Now for some sleeeeepp!!
You have to get the wind in from behind in an slightly angle to avoid boat wobbling. So the boat have pressure at one side only. This is much more stable sailing.
I like your life vest, I fish fresh water and it would be a great improvement.

Spares , you could jump the solenoid at the starter
You have a motor hanging on the rail , attach the dingy and crank the outboard

Happy Birthday Kieran from Poland!

sailing distances like that must give you an appreciation how good Captain Bligh was sailing all the way to Batavia in a whaleboat many years ago

But were you anywhere near Tongo when it went bang? Were you hit by the tsunami?
Happy birthday!! So happy that you guys made it safe!!
PS: FYI: Sailing Uma just bought the new GoPro 9 with automatic gimbal…might help with catching the sea state
Happy belated birthday Kieran!
Happy birthday! Do you sail with the wind vane and the autopilot at the same time?
I'm probably stating the obvious, but I take Dramamine (Dimenhydrinate) before going to bed on a long passage and it doesn't only help fantastically with sleep, but also with motion sickness. Forgive me if you already know about this.
If the video looks calm then it must have been pretty bad. It looks pretty intense to me. Feels like you captured the reality of it pretty well - I feel for you guys.
Did you two see any effect of the tsunami from Tonga? Happy 31st Birthday.
