- Ep. 147 HANGING MOSAICS, THE ST. LUKE MOSAIC GETS HIS HALO AND STARTING A TWO HEARTS MOSAIC!
Hey everyone! Don't you hate it when you start tripping over mosaic art? It is time to get this art off the floor, out of my way and on the walls. I hung eight more works and move the Christ Icon higher up. Now mosaics aren't blocking my way.
1:52 I begin on the St. Luke mosaic. First the lower lip goes in. I added a bit of contrasting pink to the original design and evened it out a bit. Then I worked on the neck with some outlining and a bit of brown.
4:11 I nip an inventory of outliner pieces. I am using various shades of dark brown. These pieces will be for the ears, the horns and some of the curls.
4:57 Introducing a new commission. It is an 8"x10" Two Hearts mosaic with the Sacred Heart on one side and the Immaculate Heart on the other. I have made similar designs before and this is for a repeat client. She actually gave me a heads up a few months ago that this was coming my way, which is about the most amazing thing ever! It allows me to plan for the project, which in turn reduces stress for me! I divide the primed birch plywood substrate in two parts and center both hearts on each side. I use a template from a sample mosaic for the size. I made a similar mosaic in Ep. 30 • Ep. 30 TWO HEARTS MOSA... .
6:15 I give a brief analysis of the pink glass I will be using on the roses, for which parts and why I selected each one. I will be using warm pinks and eliminate a cool pink from the mix. Then I show how I wash the glass in warm or hot water before I start since it had a grimy feel to it.
8:53 The mosaic begins with 7 little pieces of dark pink glass for the centers of the seven roses. Then I show how I cut and use the mid-range pink glass. To get a bit of a curve, I tip my nippers to the right. Then the little petals will wrap around the center pieces beautifully.
10:47 Back to St. Luke! I tackle the horns and the curly hair. I'll be honest - the curly hair was a bit slow-going. Very happy to finish it! Then the lower neck and upper body was finished!
13:42 While St. Luke sets up for a bit, I turn back to the roses! I finish adding the petals and then put in a bit of leaves and vine. Once that is adhered, I switch to the Sacred Heart and the crown of thorns that weaves its way around the heart. I opt for a grayish brown color. Once complete, I tap the mosaic to remove shards!
15:48 YAY!!! My favorite part of these Four Evangelists is here! I am making my third halo and I just love it so much! The gold is so special to add in. It is really going to unify the four mosaics and elevates them as well, especially next to the blue sky and white background.
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 147. Thanks for watching! See you next time!

The only thing better than hanging these beautiful mosaics, is to have sold them, so they do not have to be hung here! Having finally sold a Mosaic last week, I know it is a wonderful feeling! 💕
The big sunflower mosaic sold earlier this year! And some of the smaller works as well. So I’ve rearranged the pieces a bit.
Julie, there's no doubt that you get compliments regularly on your artwork. And I'm part of your fan club.
But I'd also like to compliment you on your UA-cam videos...specifically the editing with multiple angles, several different musical scores in the background, field trips to your garden, your local art gallery, the community center & classes. You even take us on your travels.
If you do all this video editing yourself, oh my goodness! If you have help, it's wonderful.
I just think that all aspects of your videos do proper credit to your beautiful artistry❣️✌️
Julie as Sharin has rightly said I second her 😊
Thank you so much! It's just me and my iphone. My daughter showed me how to do simple edits and add music.
Thanks Rupa!
Wow the walls look awesome😃❤️🌻
Thank you!
Your studio gallery looks amazing!

Thank you! You too!
Incredibly relaxing to watch! ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow! Your mosaics look sensational! I have no room to hang in my studio so green with mosaic envy! 💕
Thank you! 😊 They are already all over my house!
Love the art creations on the wall. I could sit and watch you create all day long. Very talented and always beautiful, thank you :)
Wow, thank you!
❤Julie it was absolutely fantastic watching you work on one of the saints and the hearts. The roses indeed look immaculate 😇. You did good with hanging the mosaics. It's mesmerizing to see you cut those thin slivers and adhere the tesserae!!!
Thank you so much! I hope you are doing well!
Yes, Julie getting better but will be a while before I can start on mosaics again which is tragic because I had recently started after retiring from a regular job. Also I have to switch over from ceramic tiles (which are my preferred Tessarae) to glass fir which you are one of my all time inspiration 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You are too kind. Hang in there until you can make mosaics again!
St Luke's curly hair seemed very tedious. I hope you got a nice shoulder rub afterwards. Nice to see more of your beautiful pieces hanging around you!!! I so so love that sun!!. 💖💖🎶🎶
Thank you! You are correct about the curly hair. And the sun has glow in the dark stars on it!
I appreciate all your videos and the precision and beauty of it all. I would love to learn feather cuts and making those roses. All your work is an inspiration to me. Thank you.
Josie, You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Hahaha scrub daddies are the best!😂
Aren't they?!? They should sponsor the video!!!
I saw your sunflowers a couple of days ago and you inspired me to try mosaics. My question is do you have any advice on getting started on a budget. I don’t have a large budget to get materials. Also, I am in Smyrna so it’s really cool to see such talent on UA-cam from my own area. Thanks for the info and the inspiration.
If you take a class, it is a small investment to find out if you are a good fit. Then if it clicks with you, you can slowly build up tools and supplies as needed. (Sorry-another plug since you are local!)
Hi there. What is the name of your little spatula tool and where can I get one? What type of thinset are you using? Thanks again for your videos. I look forward to watching them every night. Kathie
It is called a mini crowbar and it is available in an 8 pack on Amazon.
I live your work, so inspirational! They are relaxing and mesmerizing. I’d imagine if I started doing this I’d get lost in time while doing it. I plan on it when I can afford to do so.
I don’t understand the lion and bull for the saints though. Could you explain?
Your video’s are very professional! May I ask what software you use for this? Thanks so much! Hugz, Tree
Thank you so much! The Four Evangelists have symbols for St.'s Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The church I am making these for wanted the symbolic representation. If you google, you will see lots of such images.
Great Video, as usual! What did you use to prime the wood for the 2 hearts? I rarely work on wood, but have a some project now.
Thanks! I used Kilz primer/sealer.
Do you use sanded or unsanded grout on St-Luc?
I have not grouted it yet. I’ll likely be using a pre-mixed grout similar to epoxy grout.
I keep forgetting to ask; do you pre-cut your pieces or are you cutting as you go?
I’ve been pre-cutting for much of St. Luke. Usually I cut as I go.
