I'm glad to see that you didn't go all muted colors in your front yard. You're known for and we love you for your clown college design. It's refreshing to see somebody who's not afraid to step outside the box. If we wanted to see a yard with pinks, lavenders, and other pastel muted colors, we could watch every other gardener on UA-cam.

Paint the fence white..that would be so pretty. It would match the house perfectly.

Your fence would look great in a darkish grey translucent stain/paint, the plants would look great against it and it ties in with the roof. Did I say that out loud?! I know whatever you choose will be the right thing. Everything is looking so so good!

Regarding your rolling front fence: I think the people with the best sense of what best look can be achieved, and by what treatment, are you and Stephany.
Those who live with the forms, in the light as it changes, traversing the space, those who feel the mood of the household, the plants living there, the community & the neighborhood -- have the best sense of how to treat every element.
If you were stumped, you guys would ask us. Until you do, we might best keep our opinions for times asked-for, or when needed at home.
Holly's stompiness on the flowers? Reminds me of my dear mother.
She was the smartest, most capable, most intuitive, most well-mannered person I have ever known.
When she came to live with me, at age 90, by 91, she began to lose some of the finer sensibilities. She would appear in her chair in the living room in only her underwear and a robe, not fully fastened. And, there were 2 grandsons, 1 preteen and 1 teen, living here with us (I had both❤), plus my grown male children would simply walk in, no appt needed, at any time of the day or evening.
She would NEVER have done that before, at any time, in the previous 70 years I knew her.
I had to refold all of the satiny, silky garments in her underwear drawers daily, as she would thoroughly mess them up, every day, as if on purpose. I would ask her, "Are you looking for something you're not finding?" They all fit, didn't know why she had to fumble through ALL of them, every day.
I would have bet $500, a few years ago, that she would NEVER have done that. She has always been fastidious; no longer that.
She's now more like a 7 yr old boy. Coughs w/o covering her mouth. That mannerism was the first slippage I saw, when she was about 87. Heartbreaking for us, my sister only lasted 5 weeks, and she had a spouse who did all the cooking and shopping, ran errands, provided compansionship during tough emotions.
It took maturity, serenity, a lot of unconditional love and acceptance to achieve balance in light of my mother's new-old self.

Tks for sharing your life with your mom with us!! I lost my mom 7 yrs ago as of today!! I can imagine the family dynamics you’re dealing with and the intense patience you’re demanded. At least your mom is still with you!!
To me, regardless of how hard it was to care for my late mom during the last days and months of her life, I can never pay back what she has sacrificed for us. I’d do anything and gladly shorten my life in exchange for a longer life for my mom!! May God bless you, your mom and all your family and loved ones with great health, peace and happiness!!

Jim is right about the Lil' Raspberry butterfly bush being more vigorous. Last year I received four of the Lil' Candy butterfly bushes by mistake so I called Plants by Mail to report it and they told me to keep them. We planted some in our garden and the raspberry colored one was definitely more vigorous with great color when compared with Lil' Grape. It was a nice unexpected present.

Our Molly is probably in her last year. She's a big dog and got as a rescue, not sure of her age. Giving her all the quality time I can. She's recently gotten anxious about being left home alone so I adjusted my schedule for her. Never gets any easier, but they're worth it.

    • @EastRiverHomestead
      @EastRiverHomestead 8 місяців тому +1

@@katiekane5247 my Schnauzer was a rescue as well. I got him when he was 7. Oddly, he was given up by a family that owns one of the largest nurseries in Florida. He had terrible fear aggression. Now, he is so rickety, he can barely stand, hear or see. I pray I awaken one day and he is just gone. I had to put my 11 year-old (adopted) down last year due to renal failure. I am just now able to talk about him. He had my heart. I hope you have a less traumatic farewell with your baby.

Our 3 new Abelias have exploded in growth since mid-March. One of them is Twist of Lime, which has the cultivar name of Abelia 'Hopleys'. Funny thing, Miss Lemon has the same cultivar name! This was confirmed by someone at Plant Development, who received the message I had sent to Southern Living Plants regarding this. Abelia 'Hopleys' has those two trademark names. We now have one of each, so it will be interesting to see how they compare after a couple of seasons.

The way you talked about Holly…ever since she turned 15…typical teenager, lol! Just kidding, I know she’s a grown woman 😂! How does one sign up for next year’s open garden? So nice of you to open your garden to everyone to see the fruits of both your and Steph’s labor! I would love for you to paint the fence the same white you did on your house. With some dahlias spilling over from behind the fence! I’m getting ready to host a Barbie birthday party. I have been working so hard trying to get the garden ready. I’m glad you mentioned that hair cuts take about 3 weeks to flush out. I always learn so much from clown college 😂! The dogwood is so stunning!

Michigan is getting rain BUT it ALWAYS goes north or south of us 🥺💐💚🙃 I guess I should probably change that statement a bit we do get a sprinkle here and there but nothing compared to what we could use. It also seems that when we do get a bit of rain versus when I water the plants they pop overnight ! Of course the weeds REALLY pop too. 💐💚🙃

    Hello from Mississippi! (Zone 8b)
I’m planning a trip to your area next spring so I can shop at Big Bloomers.
Quick question: In a recent storm my 3 year old Rising Son Redbud had a branch twisted off all the way to the trunk. I pruned off the branch. Although I love the tree its layered habit results in very heavy long limbs. Any advice on pruning to avoid this happening again?
PS I have learned so much from your videos. I watch them all day long. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Fading eye sight could result in Holly being more "stompy in the flowers." She might be navigating her way more & more using her sense of smell, Perhaps even touch, rather than sight.
