Everyone is entitled to their opinion, can tell u guys didn't like it, the Banff (Canada) international media festival voted this the performance of the year, the only Korean act to win an international award till that point. So hyang didn't even know it was nominated, Btw loved your other reactions and laughed my a$$ off on the white guy at black cookout vid.
The man sitting in the audience, Michael Bolton is the one who brought this song to the global hit it was. Michael told SoHyang that he had heard many many version of this song, and her version was his favorite. She won the competition and Michael also called her a virtuoso. He returned to S. Korea 2 months later for a concert and she was his special guest and they did a duet to Lean on Me and The Prayer.
Not the one who made it a global hit. I could name two other acts that I grew up listening to it by in the 80s and 90s… And I never knew Michael Bolton sang it at all until I saw him in the video with so Hyang.
It's very interesting about your reaction to Sohyang's rendition of "Lean On Me". Clearly there was a bit of culture shock to hear this version of the song. It's also intriguing that you interpreted the composition as a pop arrangement with its quickened tempo. There have been many who consider the arrangement captured a lot of the characteristics of gospel. Also for some perspective, this program "Immortal Song 2" invites established singers to re-interpret songs based on a theme. This was "Michael Bolton" special. All invited guests sang a song that Michael Bolton performed in his career. The audience went in with the expectation to experience new interpretation in their cover. BTW, Sohyang was and still is a gospel singer. She is a devout Christian and continues to perform for churches and at other Christian events.
Michael Bolton saw this performance and called it "virtuoso performance" and invited her to his concert in Korea for a duet. and they sung "prayer" & "lean on me" PS. This stage that won the best TV show award at the Banff International Media Festival.
Also, her and the backing vocalists, those are singers she chose and she tells them how she wants them to come in as well as the orchestra. She is the master of everyone on stage. She arranges all of her covers and takes the reins of everyone backing her up. She is the conductor.
Well will try a couple more that her "Fans" Here will Love Another one I Am a Singer Legend - So Hyang "I have Nothing", ua-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/v-deo.html from Immortal Songs SoHyang 소향 … EVERYONE ... ua-cam.com/video/H5e7MPre7iY/v-deo.html (tear Alert)(Super Emotional)
In fact, I went to her performance yesterday and I could hear the heavenly voice firsthand. The sound quality of UA-cam is not that great. Therefore, hearing her voice at a concert has an emotion that cannot be expressed in words. Thanks a lot for this video.
Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood !!! I Will Always Love "So-hang" !!!
Wow gotta say , I am surprised a little! Your the first reactors to not see she sings with emotion and conviction in all her songs! I have followed her for over 8 years and she has been singing Gospel for 21 years and performed many times in USA Churches, Invited to perform with, David Foster,Kirk Franklin twice, Josh Gobin , Micheal Bolton! She changes beats etc because she is a master of dynamics , which keeps your interest! Just seems you don’t want change you want same ole karaoke copy cat singing! To each their own !
We’ve seen a couple of her other performances that we enjoyed a lot more, but this one wasn’t really our favorite rendition. The original Lean on me is a song about pain and having a friend/ shoulder to cry on, not an upbeat dance song. It’s understandable she had to change it for the competition but it just didn’t hit it out the park for us.
When Kim, So Hyang re-writes a song You can never go back to old and Boring...Kim, So Hyang is a master Technician, and who can just sing or do any genre of music...and make it better and This is the New Original many artist are using now ..... Thanks Tom S you captured the Heart and Soul of Kim, So Hyang......and Her meaning in "She sings to Comfort People in a Time of Need"
@@YBMJETT You just didn't understand it and that's fine, yes she changed it for this show but she didn't change it not thinking about what the song meant or the message behind it, she changed in a way that would fit the song appropriately, every melody change, every stop, every vocal and musical arrangement was done in so a way that it would fit the song, after analyzing this performance multiple times since the day it came out I was able to realize it, so i would suggest to do the same if you want, cause is really beautiful.
SoHyang was 🔥 Had 2 laugh in beginning when ya said she’d changed it up B4 she went off … & she went where she always goes (2 Church) & yep she WON! Great job ❤️🔥2U … WOW congrats 💥60K💥 well deserved!
I saw one other guy not like it-but he really didn't like it and he was also an African American. Now hearing how it's connected to the culture, I think some culture shock is understandable. Korean's have no culture tied to it so Sohyang felt free to change it up however she liked.
Shame you guys didn't like this more. Nearly everyone finds this amazing. The original by Bill Withers will always be here to enjoy as will Michel Bolton's version, each one can be enjoyed for their own unique style. Look upon it as a new song rather than a comparison and you might like it more. The point apart from this being a contest and the artists being told to reinterpret the songs was to honour Michell Bolton and he loved it, he loved Sohyang so much he asked her to go on tour with him. You made a good point about what the rest of the world knows about this song. MB is huge in Korea so it would be his version that was big there. I bet most there would not have known the original. Your own cultural view on the original is interesting since I am not American and that fact is new to me, so maybe you had some culture shock listening to this since it is vastly different. She won.
It just takes a while to digest this song being interpreted in a very new way. I'm sure Bill Withers would like it, especially its attempt to build unity between communities and do away with division. This was a concert to honour Michael Bolton, so famous Korean singers were asked to perform the same songs he does, but interpret them in their own way. Michael Bolton was absolutely blown away by So Hyang's performance and following the show gave an interview where he said she was a vocal "virtuoso." He then invited her on tour with him for the rest of his South Korean concerts! So Hyang is not pronounced So Yang, though it seems to be that way to us English speakers. It is actually pronounced So hYong, with just a slight h sound followed by yong, which is pronounced exactly like song but with a y at the beginning. Some Koreans gave my ears a good twist for saying it was pronounced So Young. So don't feel too bad--ha, ha, ha! 😉
Loved your guys reaction. I guess if you only listened to Bill's original version of the song then it would be kind of a culture shock to hear this rendition. I would say that this is more of a rendition to the Michael Bolton version of the song than it is the original. Overall great video!
isn't Michael Bolton famous there? I mean western something. I've watched most of reactors to not catch him on this video. it may be so hard for people over their 40's to not catch him here in Korea. Lean on Me/When a Man Loves a Waman/Love is a Wonderful Thing were the huge hit song here at that time. this is a singing competition program of the professional singers called as Immortal Songs. they sing a song of one legendary singer's the broadcast company invites. surely she won the 1st place at that day as usual.
I loved So Hyang's version though it resembles very little of the original. I played this during marching band in high school so I know the song but I did not grow up with it as you guys have described, that it's a deep rooted song in the black community (thanks for the education) so I can understand your reactions. It's a great performance no doubt but it did not touch your core and that's understandable. Thanks for the reaction guys.
I am reading comments that you didn’t like this version. While you have a right to your opinions, I must express my disagreement. To me she did show the meaning of the song, and the emotions of it, even while keeping it up tempo and fun. She was bringing that gospel, upbeat flavor to it, which is always emotional.
Well, after watching the whole video, I could tell you guys really did enjoy the performance. You feel the need to resist and stay loyal to the original I guess. But I can see you!
Well we can tell you did not like it which is fine but Bill Whither's Version was more like Yawn ...Micheal Bolton Version was the One Kim, So Hyang did (which that was the man in the dark gray suit...who said WoW) because it was the night of Micheal Bolton songs the Artist had to choose from, Which by the Way Kim, So Hyang won and Micheal Bolton presented her the Award for that night, and also Invited Her on His Korean Tour which She was in all 8 shows with him.....so in all there is Whither's version, Micheal Bolton version ...and a Whole New Level Kim, So Hyang's Version what she just did was make a good song Great
Pop Song?? I am pretty sure Gospel ! Personally I though she breathed new life into it ! Yes she won and Micheal Bolton asked her to Join him on his Asian tour! She did but only for 1 show as she has previous obligations with her Gospel Ministry! She has sung in Churches and doing concerts in about 60 countries! Often in the USA ! She learnt to Speak English by watching , Disney movies and Cartoons! Also speaks, Korean of coarse, French, a little Vietnamese and English ! Is a published Fantasy Novelist, teaches Voice and Performance at a Korean University, Plays, guitar and a little piano! Also down some acting, Maria in the Korean version of, “ The Sound of Music”, on a Korean Drama( The Horse Doctor- she also did the OST( Official Sound Track) as nonspeaking extra and a small speaking role in two of the,”Fast snd Furious” Movies! Has been coached by , Seth Riggs( Micheal Jackson’s vocal coach also coaching , Ray Charles and Natalie Cole! He also recommended her to Micheal Jackson’s. Team also through Opera, an intro to ,” David Foster! She has Performed with Kirk Franklin several times, Josh Groben and the man who wrote the Lyrics for, You Raise Me Up, Brendan Graham, has written a song for her and went to a lot of trouble to get a hold of her and get it to her! Calum Scott her her version of his song, “ You Are The Reason”, and sent a message via Utube to praise her and tell her on his next Asian tour he would like to meet her and maybe do something with him! She is fearless defeating Uterine cancer at 20, then Hepatitis from tainted blood, Having Pneumonia 8, Times in about 4 1/2 years! Just a wonderful woman of Great Character and Faith! Thank You for your Reaction!
If your expecting to hear Sohyang do any song in the original way then she definitely is not for you the reason she is loved is because she always makes every song she sings her own with class, passion and emotion and most times her version is better then the original just my opinion!
Spectacular performance and arrangement, shame you did not like it. Just move on to the next one, she has so many materpieces.Check out her rendition of You Raise Me Up from Immortal Songs 2, 2018.
reaction please i have nothing cover by vanny vabiola, with a higher note than the original, and in the middle of raising one more note, and many people have reacted to the video
This song needs passion. I have to say Bill Withers - Lean on Me, is still the best version. Bolton came alone and did it good but still, Bill Withers makes you want to have the ability to be someone to lean on and want to be able to say these words to someone when they need to hear it. She has a good strong voice but I feel the message of the song is lost and has no meaning. Play both versions back to back in the same video and compare the difference in the way you feel after you hear it.
TURN YOUR VOLUME UP! We had to avoid getting blocked.

Sohyang won this episode of Immortal Song 2.
Sohyang is a GOSPEL singer so this song is right up her alley. Struggle is her anthem if you know anything about her personal life.
