- Piece from the movie: Le Roi Danse (The King is Dancing)
Some Info:
Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687)
Italian-born composer (French nationality from 1681). Entered service of Louis XIV 1653, composed instrumental music for the court ballets. From 1664 collaborated with Molière in series of comedy-ballets which were forerunners of French opera, the last and most famous being Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, in which Lully danced role of the Mufti.
Having assimilated both Italian and French styles and tastes, from 1673 he turned to opera composition and obtained from the King exclusive rights to arrange operatic performances in Paris.
His death was caused by a gangrenous abscess which formed in his foot after he struck it with the long staff he used for beating time on the floor while conducting a Te Deum to celebrate Louis XIV's recovery from illness.
I cannot imagine how does it feel being Louis XIV yourself and listening to this masterpiece for the first time.... written inspired by and to yourself....
Yes indeed ! What will dwell in His mind ? Just underling His Majesty's grandeur and superbe performance on European evolvements !
It must have been exhausting having so many people wanting to kiss your ass all the time.
I have never heard anything that beautiful in my life. It's impressive.
You should look into how Louis XIV completely shook French Culture and catapulted it to the zenith of arguably the world, every European power was trying to copy it.
@@johnnotrealname8168
The success of the French court and its culture was largely due to the synthesis of long-standing influences from Florence, Venice, and Milan. Everything from lace, to millinery, pastries to opera; was imported from Italy, rendered French, and then done in a manner of such exuberance, pompe, and expense, that it would, indeed, shake the musical, cultural, and artistic worlds. France in the late 17th to early 19th centuries, was truly an exponent of both the apex of a society, and the later extreme decadence and upheaval of it.
Edit; “Italy” in the geographic sense, as the country did not exist, per se. The Italian city-states, duchies, and kingdoms is what I mean.
@@sergpie Yeah, I have heard that Ballet was also initially Italian and then the French King started dancing. It should be noted that until the Louis XV, there was a huge Italian influence at the court whether Queen or Chief Minister. Before that was the Renaissance and the Italian Wars.

The middle part is from Armide, which Louis, unfortunately, refused to ever see.
Other parts include ouvertures from Amadis
This movie introduced my Lully obsession. And I do not regret it.
Anyone notice how the rise of Madame De Maintenon is shown? First she's seated to the left and behind the king, with Montespan on his right. Then Montespan is gone and it's just Maintenon and Louis, but the colors are still vivid, yet the courtiers are gone. Finally it's Louis, Madame, and all the courtiers are replaced by priests and what ladies there are, including the performers, are all veiled and in black. A clever way of showing Maintenon's increasing influence at court.
Well, they aren"t priests, they're a new generation of courtiers, devots and bigots :)
Thank you for noticing. Also it's a great contrast with the rest of the film, where Louis is actively engaged with the music and dance, here he just seems bored. Static, even. What once was a vital force for his propaganda now seems like a repetition of the same thing, even though Lully clearly puts his effort into it. There's a stifling at court.
He wasn’t just bored, he became very religious to where he saw plays as a sin and now hated Lully due to the lifestyle he was living out on.
@@achaudhari101 A bit of an exaggeration to claim the King hated Lully. A "bit" exaggeration, as opposed to "significant". The court had definitely lost vitality the more Royal authority was consolidated over the nobles; initiative straitjacketed by rigid custom, like clockwork.
good point I had not noticed that, but Madame is not present at the end; she would have been entitled to an armchair. I love this era and music but this movie required way too much interpreting it. from this i would assume Lulli was madly in love with the king who did not care for his work, when in fact I think it was quite the opposite. also Monsieur and Madame were always seated next to the King. If you look closely, this depicts an opera house, with the king in the orchestra seats and the audience behind him in boxes. They built temporary (can you believe it!) opera houses if they didn't stage these outside.

The ending is more epic than the most epic music of today.

This scene represents the end of Lully's career through his very last works, around the truce of Ratisbonne (1684), a golden age for the reign of Louis XIV who momentarily defeated all the adversaries of the kingdom of France, but which is still far from coming to an end: He is only 46 years old and will still have to face many more challenges and wars to come ...
He appeared old screaming at the end because that's when we hit his stick in the foot while marking the time in the music, and he hit so strongly his foot that it had gangrena and he died. That's the level in which his life was all about the feelings of his music.

SRlsy I am 100% republican (in the anti-monarchist way) but Lully really had some talent in showcasing the king
@@MrBallasuda Louis was hardly and emperor and his "empire" was essentially a few colonies in the caribbean and a small enclave in the missisipi

@Louise de La Vallière:
His name is Boris Terral. I think his acting is very authentic. If he'd stand there with a bored or expressionless face, he couldn't persuade Louis XIV. to respect him again. It's very touching. All his feelings 'bout Louis become free in this moment. All the time he thought, the king and him are friends. In the end Louis didn't show any emotions except contempt. How would you feel? Years gone by and you think, that you know each other. Then you get dissapointed. Lully devoted most of his compositions Louis. "Without him I'm nothing.." It's kinda sad if you realize that it's over. Did you watch the movie at all? I'm sure you would understand his acting, if you did.
A beautiful scene indeed. Actually, this video contains three different tragedies of Lully. The first one is from Isis, the second is from Armide and the last one is from Amadis.
Una composición preciosa y una magnífica interpretación. Grande Lully
Heureux l'Empire

-First Baroque Period-greatest composer Monteverdi
-Second (Middle) Baroque Period-greatest composer Lully
-Third (Late) Baroque Period-greatest composers Handel,Bach,Vivaldi
i beg to differ. replace lully with cavalli.
Cavalli was an early Baroque composer like Monteverdi, not a middle Baroque like Lully. Regarding late Baroque, for me it's a tie between Bach and Handel. Bach clearly has the bigger brains but Handel seems to have greater beauty.
Aldea Alexandru uhh???? Rameau deserves a spot too!
i don't mean to be pedantic but cavalli died in 1676 living long enough to write "ercole amante" for the wedding of louis xiv with lully (who died 1687) writing inter-act ballets making him contemporary with lully. he's more "middle" than "early" baroque.
I would add Cavalli and Purcell as well :-)
juste divin
Oh my God! AMAZING
Quelle musique merveilleuse, quelle merveilleuse extraite, j'aurais aimé pouvoir voir tout le film!
What wonderful music , what a wonderful extracted , I do wish I could see the whole film !
@bellgaggs The "guy" is Lully himself, the conductor and composer who sings it to himself, savoring it's beauty and his genius. He's not singing; he's only mouthing it as he conducts.
I love the movie. I love the mucic!!

Wonderful! That´s all I can say.
Marvelous version and quite becoming to Louis le Grand!
After this film the only option is to watch the stunning recreations by William Christie of the opera/ballets of Lully and Rameau, a glorious revelation in sound and sight.

Vive le roi et vive la France
Best film!
1:31 notice how Louis XIV has a cross on his neck. A visual cue about the increasing importance of religion in his worldview. After 1685 France rightly or wrongly would be viewed as a reactionary catholic power as opposed to the more docile Habsburgs hell bent on expansion abroad and repression at home. End result the protestant powers of Europe would mostly ally against France in what were likely the last major wars in which religious reasons were important the Nine years war and the Spanish succession. This scene mirrors that increasing authoritarianism in a clever way. These wars would kill millions including famine deaths.
Does anyone know where I can get the English lyrics to this? This is absolutely glorious and moves my soul to realms unkonwn. The man portraying Lully does so with such passion it is amazing such as scene 0:52-0:54 where he seems to be transcended into the atmosphere around him! BRAVO!

Definitely gonna see this movie now.
0:44 - 0:56 sounds very similar to Lully's Te Deum. His music is marvelous. It surprises me that Lully is not more well known.
@mango2005 No, Lully enjoyed the king's favor, but the king was leery of Lully's crazy lifestyle and afraid it would stain him too. He probably was disappointed he couldn't dance any more. His father, Louis XIII (of 3 musketeers fame) was the first royal promoter of dance as a dancer himself.
