there is only one reason why GFII should never be considered greater than GFI. No character arc. Michael begins the movie as scum of the earth, and ends the movie as scum of the earth.
Yes, the Deniro portions are compelling and brilliant, but the arc of the first movie is what made it one of the greatest movies of all time.
