Amen l! preach the gospel every Sunday! Not just on mission day or when new people show up. This was my experience in American evangelicalism. Now I here it every Sunday and I am feed too!
"I believe it's essential to attend Sunday morning services to partake in the sacraments and to hear the Law and Gospel and to fellowship, as our pastor should be a spiritual guide rather than a businessperson. This is why contributing through tithes and supporting our church is important. It ensures our pastors can continue their pastoral roles, while we, as members of the church, should also contribute our skills and talents in our respective vocations. I thoroughly enjoyed this insightful podcast; it was an enlightening study."
Great discussion. I'm an ordained confessional Lutheran teaching at a neo-evangelical megachurch. The general conception folks have of us is that we are boring old Germans who don't get "on fire" or "have the spirit" because we like the "vain repetition" of "old dead white guys". Instead, I try to be the guy who just talks about Jesus and the forgiveness of sins over and over. Christ and Him Crucified.
Great discussion by some Lutherans of Lutheran's. Thank you for your continued teaching! "Ordinary Saints" by Robert Bennett is a great book that addresses every Christian's calling of vocation as service to God and neighbor vs. a view of Christian morality that's focused on "me"
Honest question, regarding some of the things you mentioned like politics or sexuality. How does the Church learn about these things if the local church is silent on them?? My point is these topics don’t have to be done in the Divine Service, but they could be done in Sunday School or something to that effect. I have found that when the local church is silent on a topic then the world will be quick to compromise us on the subject. Once we are compromised the devils win. What good is the gospel preached every Sunday if on every other topic we are compromised by worldly wisdom??
Thx for posting and for watching. The matters you’re inquiring about can be discussed in classes, in the home among family, at school, Christian conversion, good books, Christian conferences, Christian podcast, Christian book clubs, accountability groups, etc. Yet, the purpose of the pulpit doesn’t seem to be for the purpose of expanding on those matters. Yes, as scripture addresses them, they can be discussed in context but should not consume nor be the focus of the pastorate nor Divine service. The Church members should be involved in various vocations engaging the concerns you raised as they do life. However, the goal of the gathering, biblically speaking, does not seem to be to prioritize contemporary concerns and pop culture issues. I hope that helps a bit. Thx again for asking. Good question!
Great discussion. I can appreciate everything you guys are sharing. Definitely thought provoking. I think the church can preach the good news of the gospel, which is the root of our calling. But I think the church can empower the Christian to do good work in the world like addressing economic disparities, injustice, etc.
Thanks for posting! I appreciate your response. Yes, church members should be involved in contributing good to the world. However, the question is, should the pulpit primarily be for addressing contemporary events? That’s where the conversation needs to be had. The primary goal of the pulpit is to proclaim Christ crucified, word and Sacrament, law and gospel, & the forgiveness of sin. Those other matters may come up but should not be the focus. I’m sure you agree, ha. Again, I always appreciate your post!
