  • This is the story of a bird that breeds in Japan and Eastern Russia, and then flies to Australia each year. After spending summer in Australia, it goes back to the Northern Hemisphere and does it all again!
The Latham’s Snipe Project was started by a group of passionate ornithologists to better understand the ecology of the Latham’s snipe (Gallinago hardwickii) and their use of wetlands in Eastern Australia.
The work began in the Port Fairy area in south-western Victoria, before expanding to Jerrabomberra Wetlands in Canberra, and then became a fully fledged international cooperation with Japan and Eastern Russia.
SNIPE is a remarkable conservation story featuring a cast of committed people (and birds!) who are both experts and volunteers, and of all ages. They are all willing to wade around in wetlands at 4.30am to help protect our biodiversity!
