To me, this song honestly reads less as the fox spirit trying to lure the child away, and more the fox spirit actively helping the child get away from what might be an abusive family situation. The "I love you" parts seem, to me, more like the fox spirit is pretty much saying "I'll always love you, no matter how you act". It's really sweet, in my mind.

well, we're all free to interpretation, but to me it sounds like pure love bombing on an innocent kid. the lyrics "this fun power, give me more" leading up to the scream(?) and the fact kitsunes are mythologically associated with trickery and manipulation, seems more ominous to me.

Animal spirits in asian folklore are usually evil or at the least tricksters…
One of the lyrics is literally the child being betrayed
“Why, oh why did you save me?
Sharpening your claws in a lonely shrine
Possess me, possess me, did you possess me?”
The kitsune probably just possessed the child in order to cause mayhem (after that line, the kitsune calls the child “dishonest”)

This song was released on the last day of 2022.
There is a folk tale in Japan that every year on the night of the last day of the year, many foxes in the Kanto region gather at Ōji Inari Shrine in Tokyo, where the atmospheric ghost lights called "kitsunebi" produced by them are seen as a procession that night.
The shrine is dedicated to "Inari", a popular deity associated with foxes, and the foxes living in the Kanto region are said to follow this shrine.
*Before Japan adopted the Gregorian calendar, the lunisolar calendar was used in Japan. Under this traditional calendar system, the last day of the year was December 29 or 30.
By the way, there is also a legend about fox spirits called "osaki" in the Kanto region. There are variations in the legend, but it is said that they serve those of special lineage and do harm or good to others or their masters when their masters order them to do so. Even when their masters gave them no orders, they acted according to their masters' wishes. However, because their actions were sometimes too extreme, it is also said that those who kept osaki were often discriminated against by the other villagers. For example, if osaki's master just envies someone else's clothes, it will steal and bring the clothes for its master. To make matters worse, once an osaki possessed a family, it cannot be separated from them even if the members of the family are eager to get rid of it. Some folklore says that osaki were not able to enter Edo, now the eastern part of Tokyo, because of Ōji Inari Shrine, which controls the foxes of the Kanto region.
The origin of osaki is sometimes described as follows. Tamamo-no-Mae was a extremely beautiful and intelligent woman and the most favoured courtesan of retired-Emperor Toba. However, when the retired-Emperor got seriously ill, the onmyōji Abe no Yasunari found that she had made him sick and exposed her as a fox spirit. She managed to escape from the Imperial Court, but the retired-Emperor sent Yasunari and famous warriors to kill her. She was defeated in the plains of Nasu, now located in Tochigi Prefecture in the Kanto region, and turned into a stone called Sesshō-seki, which killed any living things that approached it with poisonous gas. It was later exorcised and crushed by the Buddhist monk Gen'nō Shinshō. Then, one of the pieces flew to Gunma Prefecture, next to Tochigi, and finally became osaki.
*Wikipedia has a page in English about Tamamo-no-Mae.
In this song, the lonely fox that possesses the child may be an osaki, born from a piece of the evil nine-tailed fox. Perhaps she wanted her new master because the family she had served had died out. She might spend the last day of the year with her beloved child, instead of gathering with other foxes. Whatever the child thinks about her love, she, a typical osaki, would continue to try to please the child.
In addition, nine-tailed foxes were once considered auspicious beasts in both China and Japan, but later came to be considered as evil entities that deceive people. The reason why the fox spirit in this song repeatedly calls the child "Good child" and is anxious that the child will abandon her could be because she herself was once regarded as a "bad" thing and lost the respect or love of people.
    Anyway, I love this song!!!!!

I literally love how Kikuo incorporated Eastern mythology into this new song. I’m a big Asian folklore nerd, so seeing a song about a kitsune/kumiho really got me excited whenever I saw the premiere. From what it looks like, this song is about the spirit luring a child away with promises of love and affection so that it can use its body to cause havoc, which is something that is standard in a lot of eastern folktales featuring fox spirits. I really loved the whole aesthetic of this as well as the “yip yip” onomatopoeia used in parts of the song. Foxes make that “yip-yip” noise whenever they’re happy or showing content. And the cultural instruments in the back combined with some of Kikuo’s older sounds really ties this song together.
Great job!! This song is definitely going to become one of my new favorites in the future!! Definitely an amazing way to end the New Year!!
EDIT: I realize this song might actually be about child gr00ming oh lord uh yeah I’m not entirely sure but I think that’s what they’re implying

I personally think this song is about an overprotective, controlling parent. The lines “I’ll always be with you up until you die” and “You can keep living on my back. Keep on being merry right up until you die” make me think of a parent who never intends on letting their child leave the nest no matter what. And the part where the singer says “Keep listening to me like the good child you are” and “I love when you’re a good child” give me the vibes of a parent who is really bossy, demanding, and doesn’t want their child defying them in any way, shape, or form. The last little bit that makes me think this theory is the line “Possess me, possess me, did you possess me?” I think possess is a metaphor for the parent being so controlling that the child isn’t even allowed any real free will. All in all, throughout the entire song, it sounds like the parent is just gushing about how they adore their child so much that they don’t want to ever let them go.

I was going to come up with a theory about how this song is either about a lonely fox spirit who takes in a lonely human child or that the fox is tricking the child so they can take over their body. Either way, this song is probably going to take a few listens before I can get into it but the art and story are really selling it for me (as most of kikuos videos do).

    • @supremeoverlord0
      @supremeoverlord0 Рік тому +220

I like that theory! I viewed it as symbolism for a found family situation gone wrong, in which both the "fox" and the child have leftover unhealthy behaviors from their previous environments. For the child, fawn like behaviors where they vie for the approval of others, and for the "fox," perhaps they learned to become like an abuser themselves, taking advantage of others' affection and taking them in just so they won't feel lonely, but emotionally putting down the child in the process.

This song blasts "kidnapping and abuse" to me.
In the fourth line, it says "死ぬまでずーっといてあげる (I’ll always be with you up until you die)" which encourages dependency on the kitsune. The rest of the first verse is spent on convincing the child to join the kitsune and cross through the gate between the spirit world and the regular world (youkai things), with "闇夜の真ん中 穴開けて (Punching out a hole in the midst of the dark night)" being the deciding line.
First chorus, we've got the second part of it- "ずーっといいこで信じていてね (Keep listening to me like the good child you are)"- alongside the grooming after it- the constant "I love you"'s- with the conditional "...when you're a good child" after it.
Second verse is the child speaking to the kitsune, but before that part is the confusing equinox reference. According to vocaloidlyrics wiki's translator's notes, it's referencing Higan, the week when the gate between the spirit world and the human world happens to be open. I can't make sense of the "ごくごく飲ませてしまえばいい (Gulp gulp, drink it all up)", though.
Then we're onto the child speaking to the kitsune. Most of it's normal, but the final line "ぼくに 憑いて憑いて 憑いてくれたの?(Possess me, possess me, did you possess me?)" and the damning pause after. No other part of the song has this. For the chorus after, it goes straight back into the grooming, but then states how the child is dishonest and how the kitsune will always believe the child, and the kitsune loves all of the child, even the dishonest part. Which is more manipulation and grooming.
Conclusion of the song starts with the whole thing about how they're a lonely family, which is isolation- an abusive tactic- and then I cannot parse anything from there either because I'm too tired or because it's confusing. Quite possibly both.
Oh, and before I forget, the illustration kinda(?) supports this? With the kitsune blocking the child from the torii gate, a separation in Shinto beliefs between the mundane and the sacred- essentially, something that needs to be passed through in order for a shrine to be a shrine.
Necessary disclaimer, this is just my theory of what the song is about; each person can have their own interpretation and all that jazz. Thought I'd share mine, while I'm here.

i really like how the fox spirit is portrayed here! especially with teh wonderful tuning of Qi Xuan , it seems to sing in a sickly sweet voice that tries to sway the child, reassuring them that it will be with them until death, that to be a good child they must sleep forever, while also demeaning the child as dishonest, belittling them as it says it still loves them. the most hard hitting line is probably "drink it all up / no one wants to be thrown away", as it looks like the fox spirit is trying to coerce them
it kinda reminds me of the starting chorus in "you are a useless child" but more wrapped up in false kindness, so i feel like you could interpret this in so many different ways, from a wayward kitsune spirit in a myth or an abusive family situation. im sure i probably missed something due to not knowing japanese but the lyrics are still super interesting ^^

    • @RandomPerson-ks3ql
      @RandomPerson-ks3ql Рік тому +111

I also see it as some sort of abusive family song! While useless child has a parent constantly berating and insulting their child, this song has someone constantly saying "i love you" and complementing the child. While the compliments sound good it may also be written that way to make the fox seem good while also being incredibly overbaring (i think that's the right word)
The songs good either way tho!
      Edit:
After listening to it again with the lyrics "why did you save me?" It may be a child they adopted who may have been through an abusive family in the past, the lyrics after "possess me, possesses me, did you posess me?" May also be the child doubting if the fox even does love/care about them like they say they do. The silence following that line before repeating the chorus may mean that the fox was taken aback, possibly insulted by the question, but going back to the same way of constantly complimenting them, but this time calling them dishonest. With this idea, the constant compliments and the lyrics near the beginning "hey, hey, hey what do you like? Fl-fl-fluffy fluff fluffy things?" Could be the parent/fox trying to make the child feel more secure and show that they care about them, since children do usually like fluffy things, the "caring" however can make the child feel as if all of it is false.
The fox may have also come from an abusive situation/have no previous experience with children with how they act.

      1番サビ以降は男の子の目線かもしれない。神社に捨てられた男の子と、一緒に遊んでくれた狐の子なのかな?だから2番のサビの歌詞は「見せててられる」「いてられる」になるのか…なるほど。

Despite what is in the video description, and contrary to what many may think, (Qi Xuan/绮萱) is not a "VOCALOID", but is part of another voice synthesiser, with the same functionality for singing, but which however uses a very different technology to synthesise the voice.
The Japanese community usually calls any other voice synthesiser by the term "VOCALOID", as they are already familiar with it.
Her name in traditional Chinese Qi Xuan/绮萱, a jovial and fresh voice, coming from a new brand vocal synthesizer called, "ACE Studio", the same as surprising as it may seem is native Chinese, but thanks to a technology called "Cross Lingual Synthesis", she is able to sing in Japanese and Chinese, simultaneously, and soon she will be able to sing in English.
Right now ACE Studio is at an early stage of development, but they are doing their best to incorporate better parameters and technology, and also they realese they first native english voice for the program!
Let's hope to support this startup, Kikuo was so interested in this program from the beginning and he decided to join a discord server for it.
And for those Vocal Synths fans, you can try the voice of Qi Xuan, and 14 other ACE Studio voices for free! :DDD

I love how listening to Kikuo's music is not only amazing because the music is SO GOOD, but you also learn about various parts of Asian culture, like the Asian folklore/eastern mythology represented by the fox spirit luring the child away, promising happiness and stuff, only to use the child for causing havoc, etc., etc. (Which I had no idea until I looked in the comments!)

  • @Coalgate_frsh
    @Coalgate_frsh Рік тому +35

Something I find interesting is that the entire first line is written in kana (specifically hiragana, most likely the easiest script for japanese children to read) the line where the fox spirit is trying to manipulate the child, I think. The second line where the fox starts saying "I'll give you good dreams forever and ever, I'll be with you up until you die" has kanji in it, and is written in a pretty advanced way with polishes and endings to the two sentences. Where as the first line is just them saying "ii ko, ii ko, dotemo ii ko" with no ending, no particle or anything; its sounds childish, informal, and straightforward. It's like a little kid saying "mommy is good cook". And with it all being written in hiragana (something that is really only done by children) is some sort of metaphor. So, I see this as the fox spirit trying to manipulate the child by talking in an easy, informal and perhaps "relatable" manner in order for the child to not give any second thought to the fox spirit. (In this case most likely just like them not thinking about going home or what their parents would think.) There is also probably some deeper meaning to this song. I see it as some kid, possibly mistreated or just not having it easy in any other aspect, getting manipulated by this fox spirit; with good dreams, fluffy things, etc. Yes, I do know about the japanese fox spirit new years myth but its not too important. And to be honest, I dont know what this could mean. Pretty much every kikuo song has some surreal vibe to it that gets overshadowed by realism if you pay attention to the lyrics. Maybe some kid getting abducted or like groomed, drug use, or the most likely being that this kid has some sort of trauma and their brain sends out a trauma response. (Thinking of the game Omori here)
Or maybe I just sound crazy. Who knows, kikuo may have just wanted to write a fox spirit song, it just doesn't really seem like it.
Also, I am not japanese and I'm not fluent so take this with a grain of salt

I really love this song! It has many interpretations, and I just love the darker side of how kitsune's are portrayed.
I think that the kitsune it trying to sway the child with kind words at first, making them believe that it genuinely cares about them-- then after a connection is built, going on to make the child feel as if due to his bad traits, nobody will love him for it. Except for, of course, the kitsune. Manipulation at it's finest.
