- Here we go again on this GMC Sonoma addressing a P0410, secondary air injection system fault. We briefly cover description and operation of this system, and choose the easiest path to pursue in order to determine the cause of this fault. The troubleshooting techniques we used on this truck can also be applied to Chevrolet S10 pickups with 2.2 engines. Thanks for watching!!!
Thanks for the info. Helped me troubleshoot a 2000 GMC Sonoma P0410 code. Tip for others: Check the vacuum hoses. A 20 year old rubber hose could easily be deteriorated if it has never been replaced.
Where is the secondary mass air flow pump located
@@tobysmith4027under your fender , far right side , passenger side of truck .
Great video thanks for going into such depth i learn so much from google and you tube because of guys like you ! Big thanks
I spent a weekend replacing this whole setup on 2001 jimmy, check valves and all. Code still there. So we learned to accept each other. Sit behind my wheel to long you get sun burnt from all the dash lights...just wait til the fuel pump starts to go out...thats at least a years worth of fun.
Same here by any chance , does your right turn signal light up on your instrument cluster ? Does your right turn signal click faster as if a bulb went out ? I saw videos where the pumps ground and the right turn signal share the same ground . They said it could be a bad ground and needs to be fixed
Nicely done, keep up the good work on these videos.
nice channel man. looks like lots of your vids aren't parts replacement .but diagnostics which is awesome
Hey Very good Diagnostic path Well done! Quick & To the Point, Keep em comming!!!!!!!!!!
This video is a big help for me, thanks.
Awesome Video Joe. Thank you very much.
You explained it so well thanks for the video
Thanks. I have this problem. This helps a lot.
Very helpful,, Thanks!!
I really appreciate this video, Thank you.
You betcha. Thanks for stopping by!
nice job. Helped alot.
Nice job!
Great video...Thank you....
I had that problem on two different vehicle's, its a poor engineered system and they do not use it on new cars anymore. It is very common for the motors on those things to freeze up because they are down low where water constantly makes contact with it. The inside corrodes frozen on those thing's.
The engine on my S10 had to be rebuilt, many of the parts came from a salvage yard. Well we ended up getting an exhaust manifold that was from a year prior to this secondary air system being in the truck. We did not realize it was different until after it was installed so the plan was originally to use it temporarily until we could get and install the proper manifold.
So their was no way to hook the secondary air back up. So the tube that went to the old exhaust manifold was re-routed over in front of the firewall. Over time the computer re-learned the fact secondary air was not hooked up. Now when I do the ready test secondary air is always ready like a few of the other major tests that always come up ready. I haven't had any issues with it since, it doesn't throw any code and it doesn't cause the light too come on. Essentially the computer omitted it from testing, as if it was not their.
I haven't had issue's with it since and that's been over two years. So the hassle of that system was just completely removed from being an issue. Again its a really stupid design that does very little anyway, so the fact I can get by without it is fine with me.
Hi Sir i love your videos.I wish i could be one of your worker .I really love to work in Belize
Well done sir
Nice diagnosis & hopefully he'll fix the trans fluid leak before it gets worse and expensive or leaves him stranded.
thank you good video
Answered my question....cool video.
I thought that it might ;)
Did you check the vacuum on the bypass valve and check the check valve by the exhaust manifold for exhaust blow back?
How do you turn the power relay on without a bidirectional scan tool? Does ground from the solenoid go back to the relay, or is it local to the motor jack?
Damn good teacher!
Hey Joe I have a ? I have an 01 Blazer 4wheel drive 4.3 plugged it into computer at parts store popped up similar code when broke down said replace air injection solenoid, evap canister, body control module, transfer case selector switch..on a budget man what avenue should I pursue . Thanks brother if you could give me feedback on this on what you think would be appreciated. Basically the air injection solenoid is for the air pump ? And is this related to the evap canister or not and or body control module?
Thanks for the video I'm having trouble with this the main hose from air pump disconnected causing car to overheat and shut down .. I can't find where the hose runs to re attach it to. Any advice??
I have a 03 Sonoma SLS ZRX. Were is the MAP sensor. I need to clean it.
Nice video just i have a cuestión what i have to do or where did you get the Electric diagram?
Excellent! Wish I had you as an Instructor. You should consider it! Thanks again.
Where does the hose plug into? Mine is just dangling and I cant find out where it goes.
Having secondary air injection switching valve a circuit.code po412.how do check air injection valve pump
There is a TSB on this system it's very failure prone even when there isn't tranny fluid all over it!! LOL Nice videos!!
Was this a code that the customer wanted to fix or will this item cause the truck if it fails not to start? Also on a sonoma 2.2 it tries to fire very poorly checked fuel pressure with gauge and it read 39 psi would that possibly be do to a weak fuel pump since car has good spark but will not fire up? Tks for your time
A weak fuel pump on my 2001 jimmy caused a no start. The vehicle is VERY picky on fuel pressure. It must have at least 54lb if I'm not mistaken(I could be off). this issue is a pain because it can be intermittent and cause misdiagnosis and also requires a fuel pressure gauge, and if off just a bit will cause the issue
I have a 2001 Sonoma 2.2l which now has no fuel pressure at the rail. I've changed the fuel pump, filter, fuel tank pressure sensor, and the coolant temp sensor. Any suggestions? I really need my only ride to run again. Please help
Fuel pump, fuse; fuel pump relay; fuel pump oil pressure switch. There is a fuel pump prime connector on the under hood fuse panel right next to the FPRelay. Jump 12v into that slot and listen for FP buzz.
What would cause dash indicator lights going on and then turning off on their own? My vehicle (2001 GMC Sonoma) still runs fine, but the service engine soon light goes on and off as does the ABS, & parking brake light. Loose wiring? Electrical issue?
nope, GMC
Hey thanks for the video! My fuses and relay are good, I can command the pump on and hear the relay click. I tested the relay on the bench as well. I'm not getting power at the connector for the pump when I command the pump on. I'm assuming it must be a broken wire but I'm confused as to why the fuse didn't blow if that's the case. Any ideas? I'm going to check the wiring in a bit with a test light and see if I can confirm which wire is bad.
Just because you can hear the relay clicking doesnt mean its good. It's control circuitry can be functional independent of the load side. Do you have load side power at the relay and confirmed that it is going out when the relay is turned on? If so and you indeed don't have power at the pump than an open circuit is definitely where you should be looking. As for the fuse blowing, fuses only blow under current flow that exceeds their rating, being this circuit is potentially open there is no current flow, which does nothing to the fuse. I hope this helps.
Very helpful, thanks so much for getting back so quickly! I'll test for power on the load side or just try a new relay and go from there. Appreciate the help
On a 2000 Gmc Sonoma with P0440 code what other than a bad gas cap could be the problem. The P0440 code means that the control module has detected a leak in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP). Loose fuel tank filler cap is the most common cause that triggers the P0440 code.
Dude your smart
my 2001 chevy s10 4.3L with only 90,000 miles had the P0410 code only , what gives ?
Great video. I have a question. Can I swap a 2001 S10 2.2 into a 98 without any complications?
Jimmy Barragan did you do the swap from a 2001 to you 98? Because I’m trying to do the same to my 99
have anything on a 95 gmc sonoma that only clicks when you start it up. new battery spark plugs and wires ,starter, coil packs.
great video TD where did you get a 1 amp test light?
It's a bit of a custom build, so I took a normal plain jane test light similar to this one (www.amazon.com/Lisle-28400-Heavy-Circuit-Voltage/dp/B0002BC06E) and replaced the bulb with a 3425 series bulb (www.amazon.com/SYLVANIA-DE3425-Miniature-Contains-Bulbs/dp/B00318NV54). This effectively makes this test light just shy of an 800mA load, and I use it primarily for testing disconnected electrical connectors that are no longer under load, as well as energizing most solenoids (purge, vent, etc.). I do not use this light to test computer controlled outputs such as relays, unless I know that the load the computer is energizing is more than the current draw of this test light (just shy of 800mA).
👍👍
Was this a quiz when you used a test light to test from the black ground wire to ground??? Hahaha... Yes, an ohm meter/continuity tester would be the proper tool. Or put pins in the red and black wires and use the light. (Careful not to short between the red and black wires!) Over all, a good video. Thanks...
If the ground were bad the test light would of lit because the motor would of tried to find ground through the test light
take a drink when you hear "Guys"
Funny that I thought the same thing as so many other people LOL extensive teardown to remove a battery LOL
I have a 2001 Chevy S10 2.2 l replaced pump couple years ago still works great but the engine light keeps coming with that code I've replaced the fuse over and over it's not the fuse any info would be greatly appreciated
Mark Bagley, the air pump itself is a high failure item on these, typically due to water intrusion. GM has a TSB for replacement of the motor, solenoid, and hose assembly to try and correct that. Does the secondary air injection pump run on your truck after a cold start? Will the motor run if you provide power and ground directly to it?
the pump does run on every cold start even if the light is on at the time of start and haven't reset it
I would be suspicious of a solenoid or diverter valve problem in this case. The easiest thing to do would be to bidirectionally command the pump to run and the solenoid to open and verify the oxygen sensors drop lean, if they do not than look into solenoid and diverter operation. If the solenoid is not supplying vacuum to the diverter than it will not open and allow flow into the exhaust, the same would be true if the diverter were not opening either.
noticed you had secondary air infection on the diagram, might want to look there first
why cant i find a mechanic like you in my area of Connecticut. The last one I had charged me $500 to change out solenoid valves etc to fix a check engine gas tank pressure test failure. driving home the light came on again, while filling up I noticed a gas smell, used a flash light to find a rusted out fill pipe. changing the fill pipe fixed the pressure test. never got the $500 back and had to pay extra for the fill pipe install. total rip off.
can I just remove the whole air pump and put something in the exhaust manifold holes??
You can take an exhaust manifold from a 1999 Chevrolet S10 and put it on your truck. The 1999 model year does not have a secondary air system, so the exhaust manifold doesn't have the hook ups for it. After that you can remove the system. That's what I did on my 01 and now I no longer have to deal with that stupid system. Over time my computer learned it was no longer their and now my computer constantly gives me the ready for the secondary air. For the first few months after, the light would come on with trouble code 0140, over time it stopped. You are able to pass an emission inspection with one not ready on an 01 and later vehicle, so your secondary air can be not ready as long as long as everything else works.
Fearless
You have proof of only having 1 monitor not ready to ok to pass. ?
I failed. An it’s a 01 An only one not working is that.
Hi I have a GMC Terrain I replaced the pump and still getting the code
I've just done both pump and valve. Still get codes. 2.2 ecotec. Trying to figure out what's going on
My 03 S10 has this problem now and a vent valve
I have a 2002 and the air pump has always been a problem. That and the check valve.
The problem I’m having now is the system is reading “not ready” and it’s been driven….?
System has been completely changed out and I don’t get it?
Mine was full of broken plastic bits.
was this a crank no start?
nope
So is this code not a big deal then?
When it comes to an S10 this can be a real pain.
You haven’t check the fuse yet.
Stop saying guys
Hi,I ready do it all the test and I no power from the relay to solenoi
