    Dude thank you for your thoughts in The Crux section. I have been stressing myself out choosing a new camera for work ping ponging between Lumix S5ii, Sony FX3/FX30, Sony A7iv, Canon R5 for months! Let's be real here though, 99% of people aren't going to tell the difference between any of these cameras and only care about the end product. Which all of those cameras are more than capable of achieving an insane level of quality. The choice mainly comes down to personal preference and what system you currently use.

    Panasonic video IBIS stabilization is one of the best and outperforms Canon/Nikon/Sony when stabilizing walking footage. ( C-AF needs work, but this is their first camera to use PDAF C-AF, so I would expect it to get better over the next year. Panasonic is known for producing many free firmware updates over the life of their cameras. ) Also Panasonic will be releasing the S5 IIX in a few weeks, which will include USB drive recording in ProRes up to 1.9 Gb/sec, along with ALL-I recording, ProRes external RAW recording, Blackmagic external RAW recording, and Internet streaming with or without a computer.

    The "night mode" is for reducing eye strain when shooting in low light. Because the human eye is less sensitive to red light, looking at a monochrome red screen won't force your eyes to readjust from light to dark and then to light again when you look away from it. It's the same reason why they use red lights inside submarines.

    I got my s5 1 for really cheap during Black Friday as I guess they were clearing stock for the new version. I was initially annoyed when I saw the new version released soon after but then I realised it was over twice the price I payed, and I wouldn’t even utilise the main improvements (eg autofocus) as I use adapted vintage prime lenses. Overall very happy with the camera.

But now in 2023's I will start looking for the Panasonic ones, like GH6 for exemple. Sony a7IV looks amazing, but the price is the hardest part, and the 4k60 crop makes no sense

  • @avarmadillo
    @avarmadillo Рік тому +2

    Kensei, Thank you for such an even handed review of the Panasonic S5ii. You're right. The AF is dramatically improved from the original S5--a camera I loved, and constantly used MF, with third party lenses. The only thing that bothers me about these Panasonic cameras is the peaking. To be fully confident in shooting in MF it needs a better peaking feature. It was excellent in the GH5. I don't know why it's not as good in the full frame offerings.
    But I agree with you. The Image quality, V-log grading, are top notch---a true film maker's camera, not a photo camera with video tacked on.'
    I love using this camera, You are spot on, it is incredibly easy to use. Its' video assist features are great, far better than Sony. And I think image quality and colors are better as well. The image is more filmic and less digital. I'm always amazed at how good the images look when I load the footage into FCX.
    Panasonic has a real winner here with a lot of superior features and assist capabilities than any other maker of hybrid cameras. Why is Sony so far behind on these true video capable features? What's so hard about waveforms and C4k, and spot metering, and getting rid of that green cast in footage. I don't understand.
    Yes, the AF is not as good as Sony, but this is Panasonic's first iteration of phase detect AF, and they keep making updates. So it's hard to say where the AF might end up when all if said and done.
    Your videos are great. When I see your reviews I know watching will be time well spent. Thanks for taking the time to review the Panasonic and keeping an open mind.

      @@KenseiAkatsu The Lumix S line of lenses goes from 18/24/35/50/85 mm f/1.8 and all of these lenses have roughly the same size and weight, so you can swap any of these lenses without having to rebalance your camera. They also feature almost no focus breathing. I think Panasonic is the only brand that offers this in an affordable lens line. Panasonic still needs to flush out the full line with longer lenses, longer zooms, and macro lenses. But they are off to a very good start.

    Good test, the stabilization is not easy to review between the A7IV and the S5II because it depends of the lens. With wide lenses (12-20mm), Sony has the edge because Panasonic has too much distorsion in the corners. However using lenses between 24-200mm, Panasonic is much better, really much better. I agree with you the A7IV has better AF, but I think Panasonic will improve it with firmware update, the camera is very young.
    I'm disappointed by the video profiles on the S5II though, V-Log is great, but every other profiles have details filtering (I think Chroma NR) in low light, the S5 and S1 are better and they are great for low light when the goal is to get very low noise and very good details.

I am not a professional but I would like to assemble a universal set with a lens prepared for tourism. Unfortunately, fixed focal lengths fall out and I have to consider a good zoom for traveling. Very often I hear that they are comparable - after all, it's a body and it depends on the lenses. Please give your opinion based on your experience. So you heard that S5 autofocus was...'not that good'? I see you struggling to be politically correct about it, lol, but it had to be the worst ever. Totally unusable. Pretty much the same for Leica and Sigma FP as well. I sold my S5 2 yrs ago after waiting about a year to see if somehow Lumix would come up with a firmware upgrade to fix that problem. I loved pretty much everything else EXCEPT the autofocus, but I couldn't do WITHOUT the autofocus. I switched over to Canon R5 and a lot of overpriced RF glasses. I love the autofocus, but not much else (okay, Canon colors are pretty good). Today, I made the decision to go back to L-alliance and pre-ordered the S5iiX. I also bought a second-hand Sigma FP and sold my entire Canon gear. I'd be very interested to see you review of the S5iiX when you get your hands on it.

      @@Tugela60 Sony makes the same mistake as Canon did in early 2010s.. They do not listen to people who buy their gear. Those software limitations are not just an error in production.. Its on purpose..

      @Irakli Metreveli They are due to underlying hardware limitations, specifically in exactly how the ISP located between the sensor and processor (this will be a different design for every combo) works. Some things can be done purely in software in spite of that, but even if so, doing so will require significant resources which means that other, more important, functions in the camera may become unstable or not work at all. Resources available vary from model to model and are not infinite.

      @@Tugela60 When they updated desqueezing in ver3.0, its included 1.3x and 2.0x. why they didn’t include 1.5x, 1.6x and 1.8x when most of affordable anamorphic lenses are in between 1.3 and 2.0… I have feeling they just don’t give a $¥!^ Have a good night

    • @Tugela60
      @Tugela60 Рік тому +1

      @@metreweli Probably due to the way the image signal format coming out of the ISP can be reasonably processed by the processor without skipping frames. Some ratios may be practical, others might not be.
      If the hardware has not been designed with that in mind, then there may be a limited range of realistic options available when it comes to adding new features later.

    This was suppose to be a great video, I almost got the pop corn to see it, but I stopped watching it as soon as I saw you smoking a cigarette. I was like this man probably does not care about his well being if he is self willing to exchange it for a dose of nicotine....But I am not going to lie, the video was, so good that I came back, and finish watching despite the smoking crappy parts. Thank you for take the time of you busy life to create this video for us to see, and learn something new.

    Sony gives a discount on A74. So, the price is not an issue. The issue is best IS. But the lens option of Sony blew away Canon and Panasonic. Panasonic has very limited lens options like Canon. On the other hand, if you looking for photography then go for SONY. As for video or Vlog, APS-c is always better. Trust me, vlogging and going around all day with a heavy full frame is quite impossible for a short person like me.
    As a Canon APS-C (M50 with 22m) user I am thinking to shift in Sony APS-C as in real words Vloging with a heavy full frame is quite impossible. But most of the Sony APS-c is outdated. So I am looking lens that will come at Canon RF-s or RF for R10, Fuji XS-20 as my budget is 1300usd altogether (Good prime with F2, a standard zoom F2.8-4).

    panasonic has the L mount alliance with leica and sigma. There no comparison when it comes to quality of lenses at this point. Panasonic is also on its first version of the firmware. Its only going to get better. For so long as was so into buying a sony. Got my self a panasonic s5iix instead
