Used to walk on School St. to and from the Kamehameha Bus Terminal when I lived on Lanakila and Kuakini in the late 50s and 60s. That area has change so much.
Hoh! Vicariously enjoyed the “mouth feel” of the tacos from that crunch and the ribs from the fall off the bone footage 🤤! I can appreciate the purist definition of what a dish “should be”. But Auntie Z put it perfectly. Like our language, local food is an evolution, an amalgamation of our cultures and provisions. Without that evolution we couldn’t enjoy many dishes like cake noodle, li hing mui anything, saimin, cajun food, california roll etc. Love how you showcase the food but also the folks behind the food, which makes it all the more appealing 👌. Your guest star reviewer agreed with the bomb conclusion that Auntie Z is ono grinds 👍!
I love when you talk to the owners and chefs and show some of their personal history, like that wonderful photo. Auntie Z is very sweet and her food looks yummy! Support local business!
Thanks Diana. I usually ask and most surprisingly turn down being on camera. Not in a rude way, but they're too shy. Even Aunty Z needed a little coaxing. But being interviewed seems to help their business a lot more. I've been lucky so far this year to get people to speak on camera. Mahalo for watching!
Another great find by you. Great to hear she made it through the pandemic and now hopefully her business will continue to grow with your help. Can't wait to see where you and Bubba go to next. Bubba, you have a great, mom!
Omg ( Hawai'i style) Mac salad is my weakness- that one looks perfect! Great video, adding this restaurant to my ever expanding list. Thanks for another amazing video! 👏 💐
Misty: GREAT clip !!! I like that you 'filmed' it inside the restaurant instead of in your car . And.. the Auntie Z's really friendly and welcoming. Definitely on my "go to" place the next time I'm on Oahu. Doug K.
Aloha Misty! I thought I left a comment but knew you respond to all ppl and realized it didn't go through. I think the Zacos look really fresh and good. And 5 Ribs is worth the price to me! I can see Aunty Z has great energy and way to represent Kalihi, both of you. My Family is from Kalihi and they still rep Farrington Gov T Shirts. Mahalo for another great review🤙😋👍
Mahalo Sean! Aw yeah I never got the first comment. Sorry! Yes I love Aunty Z's happy personality. You can tell she cooks all her dishes with love. We want to come back and try her pasta and pizza! That's cool your family still reps Farrington. Unfortunately in the 90s they made Houghtailing St the line and if you were east of Houghtailing you went to McKinley. So that's why I'm a Tiger. 🤣
Aloha! New subscriber here! I love watching your videos- so awesome supporting local small businesses. Especially the old skool ones! Wow. The shot of the old Ambassador Market brought back memories. I bagged groceries back there in the 90’s to help a friend out 😂 Great video! The BBQ ribs especially looked soooo ONO. Keep up the great content 👍
Aloha Tammy! Thanks so much for subscribing and watching my channel! Wow amazing throwback that you bagged groceries there. In the 80s my mom and I would walk there for small items and I remember getting either an ice cream sandwich or popsicle there.
hi misty im glad you got to eat at aunty z's and to share her ono homecooked food. Zena (aunty z) and her husband are so nice they make u feel so welcome like youre visiting their home
Aloha Misty: Nice to see you finding a great place in our old neighborhood! Those dishes looked really yummy! I am so hungry after seeing the ribs with rice - it has been such a long time since I had saucy ribs paired with rice - a gourmet dish to me. The highlight was seeing you spend some great time with your son - a precious moment in both of your lives. Nice to have aunty promote her great work and skills. Looking forward to more great finds of yumminess. Best wishes and much 🧧! 🤙
Aloha Bill! I'm so glad she's in the old neighborhood. Bubba will be joining me next week too as there is no school again next Friday...that's the DOE for you. 🤣 Have a great weekend! 🤙
Ah man I've been there those ribs were absolutely fantastic 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 The first place I went to after COVID. The menu is delicious and every single one is great tasty should be tried 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Omg the BBQ rib plate looked so fantastic Misty 😍 love those tacos you had at the beginning with all the toppings. That’s such an awesome restaurant. Your son is adorable ☺️
Mahalo hawnjoe925! Yes try Auntie's pastele. But there are actually a lot of places that make. You just gotta know where. Pastele Shop on School St, Jackie's Diner in Aiea, Wat Get Kitchen in Waipahu, Silva Store in Ewa Beach and Happy Rico in Kaneohe.
We loved your review and interview with Auntie Z! So excited to try this place as we have been craving birria tacos and have yet to find a place that has them. I also like the variety of the menu. There is a little bit of everything which is cool. Glad the electricity came on! It has been crazy windy this past week!
Hi Tina and Connie! Yes give it a try. Birria tacos can be found at Straight Outta Husk in Aiea and La Birria Taco truck in pearlridge sears parking lot for other options. Let me know how Auntie Zs are!
I gotta go there. The food looks amazing! I used to play mountainball with a lot of Portuguese and Puerto Ricans from Kalihi and the wives would make delicious food. I wonder if Aunty Z would know any of my teammates? I’ll ask her. Great review Misty!
Auntie Z's restaurant has so many onolicious foods to choose from. I've eaten there a few times and tried the pastele plate, baby burgers w/onion rings, both birria & Zaco tacos, and also the roast pork plate. Each dish was well seasoned and flavorful!
A coworker gave me some fresh pastels and she told me to cook it in boiling water. I took off the wrapping on it and put it into the boiling water and saw it breaking apart. A hard lesson learned. Afterwards cooked it with the wrapping on and enjoyed a fresh cooked pastels.
there used to be a United Puerto RIcan Association (UPRA) (hall) building across the street, from this place, above the Mexico restaurant, on School Street; the UPRA was located across the Mexico restaurant's parking lot and a small park; Helena's Hawaiian Food & Mitsuba Delicatessen are both located on this side of the street (where Auntie Z's Kitchen is). K&K Kitchen (the old Mitsuken location; it is now, by a First Hawaiian Bank branch on North King Street; across from a Nissan car dealership (the old Kalihi Bowl location). I think that this is a cool place (Puerto Rican/Italian dishes). (There is one Latin restaurant on the Westside (Waianae) called: Coquito's Latin Cuisine Restaurant; first time, I tried a plantain banana. I did visit Taqueria El Ranchero once, but not El Palenque (in Wahiawa); Los Chaparros (Mexican) restaurant on S. Beretania Street (close to University Avenue & the Puck's Alley area). )
Mahalo for watching Kevin! Yes you're right. I did a video a long time ago doing a memory walk through as this is the area I grew up in. You can see it in my Hawaii Nostalgia Playlist here: ua-cam.com/video/b69xj6JOZ_E/v-deo.html We also filmed Coquito's when I first started in the Waianae Westside Eats video. I honestly did not care for it. I like El Palenque and Los Chapparos. Taqueria El Ranchero is just ok. I do like their salsa though. Have a great day!
Auntie Z is correct -- everyone makes it different. My aunty makes her gandules rice with choke whole olives and chunks of pork belly which is how I like it. She also makes da bomb pasteles stew. Food looks ono there with so much variety. I would try all given the chance lol Looks like you both had the whole place to yourselves -- just like V.I.P. so no need eat inside the car 😂Glad Bubba enjoyed his zacos. Have a greet weekend Misty and thanks for sharing more broke da mout kine grindz 👍
Yes we went right at opening and the electric went out! But she said no worry I get gas stove. 🤣 then the power came back on and went off right as we finished eating. The foodie gods were amongst us!
Enjoyed the video. I'm Puertorican, so the pasteles is one of my favorite dishes. Thank you and aloha from New Jersey.👍
Aloha Gamaliel! Puerto Rican dishes are sooo delicious! I bet you have amazing restaurants in NJ and NY!

@@FoodFiend It was fantastic the pasta is a must try. The tacos and everything was a truly good. We went there for almost the entire time.
Those are some meaty ribs; have enough rice (that was a humongous portion of rice!) 😋😆. Thanks for sharing another local mom & pop.
Yes supah meaty. Thanks for always watching! 😊🤙

Great video. Did you shoot that in 4k?
No I always shoot in 1080p. I don't have the patience to upload 4k and most people watch on their phones anyway.
😋😋😋 Yummmmm!!!
Looks like a winna! Can tell she loves to cook.👍
Yes she's very passionate about it. Love it.
I love a thick ranch!!!!
