Want a good purple stain/dye? I use Americolor gel food color, mixed with vodka and it has worked fabulous. As long as the finished project is kept out of direct sunlight, it'll hold the color for years, when protected with a clear topcoat. Try it! You'll be amazed and they offer about 60 different colors to choose from. You can also mix and match for your own colors. Best way I've found to stain wood, yet! 😁
@@BuildDadBuild , it really is. If you don't mind, I'll send you some examples of my Shao Sugi Ban, dyed with Americolor, so you're able to see the quality of the dye. The waste of vodka sucks a bit, but who cares, right? As long as you're able to create the piece, with the exact color you've envisioned!!!
thought about this, came to check on youtube if its possible and how it would look and its perfect for the look i had in mind where the grain is popping and the color in rich but transparent.
This was a much better result than I expected, to be honest, lol! Not sure how it'd hold up if in sunlight too much. I still think I'd prefer just sticking to India inks, which come in a greater range of colours, and you can get them a lot more pure. I used India inks to dye a couple of Ikea stools, because i couldn't find normal wood dyes in bright greens and purples, lol! India inks are a bit expensive though, but I think they're worth it. Again...use isopropyl to water them down if you're afraid the colour might apply too strong to your surface....but I did not find this the case when I dyed my stools. Wish I could show you a picture, lol! They turned out so good!
You’re moving up on my favorite UA-cam list. In my top 5! YOU ROCK. Not a fan of the nail polish, it’s not my thing but we all can’t be fashionable. I am looking forward to your next video. I love the sanding tool, the “Restorer” and will be getting one after Christmas. I’ll have to go back and check out your links for purchase. Thanks for the effort you put into your videos. You are awesome!
Thanks man, I like your videos and it’s getting me hype to start doing some stuff like a table and kitchen caddy for my griddle and bbq pit, also a desk for my wife
I love all the colors. You are a wild and crazy guy! I love it. This is my first time on your channel. I'm so glad I came across you. Your pretty cool.
Teal ? I think that's the color🤷♂️. Cool video👍. So many different ways to make dyes since I first saw Keda. Saw people use food coloring, then I saw your leather dye vid, now magic markers....has me wondering if I mix in some color pigment we use to color the mortar for certain brick jobs if that'd give a good result😆🤘🔥
I do this all time it’s actually the only way I make and use alcohol ink , but I actually cut the plastic part of the marker cotton and I will use the cotton to stain my wood it does really really good. You should try it..
Cool to see how you can dye pine. I'm curious, would you be able to see how deep the dye gets absorbed? Mainly thinking if I carved on some, it would be great to still keep the color.
saw something a long time ago for dying natural fibers you can use koolade as a dye ........dont know if that helps you or not but there you go hope it does and hope it works well
If you haven't tried it yet, you definitely can do shou sugi ban in a charcoal grill. I used lump, and cherried over all my coals with a hairdryer, then put the wood in and watched. My wood turned out a little browner than normal, but that could be because I used a fir 2x4. not the best way of doing it, but it works
What is a good way to remove the char off the boards? I don't have the funds for the restorer yet.. Would a wire brush be good? Any other suggestions? Love your videos
i tried staining a DIY guitar with epson printer ink i had laying around (i used to have refillable cartridges). I think it looks great! made a cool cyan to magenta gradient with it
Wow that looks really nice after being burned & sanded. (Is that that brush type sander you showed us in your denatured alcohol food coloring vid?) Anyways. I got a Bernzomatic torch, got a torch tip, burned the 💩, it turned out pretty good. Now I gotta sand. And then… since I couldn’t score any denatured alcohol… I guess I’ll try this. *P.S. were those like permanent sharpie markers that you used or just regular ass markers. (Not crayons or something right?) would that work?
Hay nick love the idea about using other things to use as a dye 😃 got to say the orange on my phone looked a really nice red lol 😆 or maybe I just need a new phone 🙃
What in the magic marker just happened?!🤔🤯 Why do they all look so good??!!! Well... Apparently I Know Nothing but wow!!👌 Love the idea and that Purple is Awesome!😱 Cheers to another great video 👍 🤘🤠🥃
Um... maybe try a drawing ink? Or a refill for studio art markers? They're more expensive than Bic Marks-A-Lot, but you wouldn't have to futz about with ripping the markers apart to get at the ink. You just need to check that they're transparent, so you don't obscure the wood grain. I just know that ink-based Pitt drawing brush pens are lovely on wood. Just sayin'.
Want some stronger alcohol, try using Everclear! It's not like you'll be wasting anything worthwhile. That sh!t is undrinkable, at least since back in the college days. I am surprised how well the colors turned out though.
That purple... saving this video so I can do this! Thanks for sharing the tips!!!!!
Sure thing, Corey!

Great video and thanks for the tip.
I'm curious to see how deep the dye penetrates.
When applied like I did it penetrates about 1/8 of an inch. I would think (depending on species) would penetrate deeper if submersed.
Cheers
Great vid Nick. That purple is boss. It's rate nice.
Thanks, James!

I like the KEDA dyes... but I'll have to try this. I have many old markers from doing Sharpie art... very cool.

Love the They Live reference. A masterful Carpenter flick.
I love that movie.
How about trying alcohol ink or resin mica powder?
Gotta love that purple!

My Walmart will never have markers again Haha thx for this new way to dye. I was also looking for the perfect purple again super thanks.
Sure thing!

Hey what about highlighters? They glow in black lights. That should make for a really fun result.
Liked the idea. Wonder how crayons and heat might work. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Cheers!
In case of the purple ink stain, have you tried just using the ink from your everyday ink pens. It's a really pretty purple especially on oak wood.
Excellent Chief. I’m not one disagreeing with you but the blue is the best. Each to their own. ChinChin
Don't get me wrong, I like the blue. I'm just glad the purple turned out!
Cheers
Always a thumbs up for an Evil dead/ Army of darkness quote
Hail to the king, baby!
Cheers!
I wonder what pure drawing inks would look like? They come in a large range of colors.
Nyalox and restorer seem to do pretty much the same thing just not a quick and efficient it seems. Awesome video nick thanks
You are correct. The Restorer is just much much faster.
Cheers
Wish U could show the Koop aid vs marker so we can c the difference
Im thinking this marker trick is better than food dye?
Another great video!! Thanks brother!
Cheers, Bryan!
I use illumilite resin dyes fir mine. Works a treat.
Hmmmm...future video?? LOL
@@BuildDadBuild 100%, I use it with water and the colours are always bright but my purple always sucks too haha
Am I the only person who clicks on Nick's videos and likes them before they even start then let's them play through to the end when I'm busy

Just wondering what I'm gonna do with all those leftover pink markers. 🤔
LOL

Hey Don!
I started out with a nylon bathroom brush!
Or try this attachment for your drill.

Is it a "brushmachine" og what is on the rotating part?
60 grit nylon brush
Those look awesome! And YES, cerialien(f?&kin autocorrect) is a thing. I make tye dye and that is my favorite blue dye.
Noice! Do you sell them?

@@BuildDadBuild i’m sure you can get a wicked purple with the right blend of C and M
How long do you let it sit, my jar is dark purple, but no color transfers.....
Like an hour?
@@BuildDadBuild I let it sit a few hours and it worked👍
I like all 4 on the burnt side.
Me too!

I have a question
How much liquid dye unicorn spit would I need to do a 10'x12' shiplap shou sugi wall???
Depending on how much you dilute it, 1-2 bottles.
Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild thanks!
I do have another question I only have a small blue mapp gas torch will one can of fuel be enough?
@@fakeout735 Hard to say. Depends on the torch and the size of the can of mapp. A high output nozzle and a 14oz tank should be enough...
Man those came out awesome wish I could see what they look like in person.... 🤔 wait a minute
