Italians came to Germany in larger numbers as builders and tunneling specialists even before 1914. And with them came Italian cuisine. The icecream makers from the Cortina valley were among those early "pioneers".

Citation needed. Truth: any immigration before WWII was tiny compared to post-war. And the pizzerias and gelaterias are, by and large, the product of the post-war immigration wave.

That is a matter of definition. I would describe the typical German Herrenhaus or Gutshaus as a (more or less modest) castle, up to really large castle complexes, especially in the former German East beyond the Oder and Neisse rivers. Their architectural style is predominantly Baroque and Classical, so one tends to perceive these buildings as castles.

@@sisuguillam5109 Most of the old "Gutshäuser" which might equate to the English Manor are either still privately owned with no public access, or have been converted into retirement homes (there is one in our county town), or hotels.
Sometimes you don't even realize that a building in the middle of town was originally a "Gutshaus".
In one of the neighboring towns, the old (smaller) building was converted into a meeting and event location (concerts, celebrations, theater venue).
** Because inheritance law here has long required an equal distribution of all wealth, lands were often given to siblings or sold to others to pay off the siblings.
So if you didn't manage with foresight, you couldn't divide the assets in such a way that the manor house and the main lands went to the 1st heir.

Listening to Kirsten`s story about her life, her reasons for living in the UK and by following the dialogue with you, Sara, let me remember the first time (while beeing on your YT-channel) to my last female english teacher at our german Gymnasium. Which was more than 40 years ago.
She always pointed out: Klaus, your English isn`t as good as needed, Klaus, i don`t like you and your behavior, Klaus, whatever you will perform, you will get high grades (which in Germany means, your job, your homework was NOT good).
And now, I feel so good !!! Because everything you were talking about, I am able to understand and to follow you really easy. More or less, already since I`m following your YT-channel. And that`s a nice kind of indication for my former (or long ago) self appreciation.

Oh I can 100% relate. It's the small things that you usually don't realize in everyday life but as soon as you don't have access to them any more, you start to miss them like crazy. I moved to Northern Canada at the age of 18 last year (as an Au Pair), so I basically didn't have a clue of many things in life. Since I now just recently returned, this is when I first got to really compare the lifestyles and boyyyy my life over there was different to the one I live here now. I just got my first culture shock ever (and that's when moving back to my home country!) but I do have to admit, the first thing I did when arriving at the airport was to go to a proper bakery. I never thought I could miss bread that much but it's definitely true😂

I will forever love the German directness but sometimes I wish it would be even more direct and honest!
Due to social media and everything, lots of people will always tell you that you’re rude when you’re actually just honest, so in their real life they will turn it down a little and be more self-conscious. And because of that, I feel like that honest culture and directness is slowly, very slowly but it is, dying out. I hope it doesn’t but I can definitely feel the difference between 10 years in the past and now; people are trying to be more polite. Especially with emails, like Kristen mentioned. Normally you get a replied rejection, but some Germans even do ignore you. It’s sad honestly, i prefer when people are brutally honest; I don’t care even how rude it may seem, I value honesty a lot.
If you’re a German reading this, please don’t let our honest culture die out :D

I am German and currently live in the UK (England). I've been here for 4.5 years and not much enjoyed it. I also lived 3 years in Switzerland, 6 years in France and 2 years in Canada, but next month I will move back to Germany (to the very south) and I am so excited.
My hubby is English and he I'll come over about 3 months later. And he says he CANNOT wait!
So true about the clichés and some being false and some right. The directness of the Germans, lol, this made me laugh because I sometimes got into trouble for "being straightforward" here. 🤣
But there are too many things I don't like here: the vast amount of LITTER! OMG, yes, there is beautiful countryside and buildings here, so why do the British people not take care????
In my town (as well as where I lived before), there is so much dirt everywhere, plus VOMIT and people seem to spit on the ground everywhere. Yuck 🤮.
And then there are no Alps here, so I just HAVE to leave. 😉
Like Kirsten, I also once fell in love with the English language. 🥰 And an Englishman... Interesting, I met him in Switzerland a long time ago.
Thanks for the video ladies, and Sara please do not move to the UK now, OK?! I know you like the Alps as well, and the bread, and you'd miss the cleanliness of Germany. Yes, German bakery goods. Whenever I land in Frankfurt and pass one of the bakery outlets at the airports - the smell hovering over is divine. And the food is literally call you "buy me buy me!". Here in Ireland a lot of shops have a little deli counter where you can have a sandwich or a roll prepared, but it doesn't even look half as appetizing, when you see how loveless they sometimes spread butter across the roll, smack a big dollop of mayo or coleslaw on it with a spoon or whatever else you want like ham, chicken fillet, cheese, tomato or whatever. IIn Germany the food is already laying in the counter already, but looks like it is prepped with much more passion or love than over here. I also miss sockets in the bathroom or light switches inside the bathroom. Windows that open to the inside (not to the outside or windows that have parts that do not open at all - how you're supposed to clean these if you're not on the ground floor?), some old sinks still have the separate hot and cold taps - in one you scald your fingers, in the other freeze them off. Or having a big boiler tank in the hot press and an emersion you have to put on before you need hot water (let me tell you since living in this particular apartment I mostly wash my hands with cold water only. Seems the water tank also doesn't heat the water too well if you fancy a bath, takes quite some time to heat up, takes away space that could otherwise be used for storage). Otherwise I couldn't think of anything I am missing, apart from some German dishes and my friends and family of course :-)

I showed the spectacular church where the Von Trapps were married to my daughter and grandchildren. We’re on our fourth generation of Sound of Music lovers! So incredible that their story still brings together people from all over the world! Love from Southern California! ps On my first trip to England, forty years ago, I have to say the food was absolutely awful! I can’t believe how delightful it looks these days in Kirsten’s videos. 😊💕

Well, you two wonderful ladies looked for each other and found each other, as we say in Germany. I find it very pleasant to listen to you. Yes, these old English mansions are something very special, but there might be an opportunity to start with a smaller B&B and then maybe get a little bigger over time, or let's see when a corresponding opportunity arises, never say never, too a German saying. There are beautiful things in every country, we just have to be willing to discover them and then enjoy these things. Kirsten has an amazing voice!! Very nice

What a wonderful video. I am German and spent half a year (two terms) at Aberdeen University way back in 1988/89 (returning for many, sometimes really long vacations) and can second everything that Kirsten said. The countryside is gorgeous in GB (especially in Scotland but also in Yorkshire and other places - just to name a few, Lake district or Buckinghamshire, Devon ...). The food is much better than most Germans think and yes, I love the beer very much, especially the traditional ales. And yes, after a couple of days I begin to miss the German bread and sausages and cold meat. As for being considered rude as a German in the UK ... yes, I also experienced this. Germans are way more direct than British or US people and it is also true that people from southern Germany sugarcoat more than people from my area (the Ruhr Metropolitan Area in the West of Germany). So thank you both, this was very so nice to find my experiences covered.

When it comes to food in England (at least London) one needs to try the Indian restaurants. Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Jalfrezi are especially popular there.
Interestingly enough, the Veggie burgers they sell at the MacDonalds there are essentially and Indian potato cutlet. They also serve chicken tikka salad.

That is why I always had a few kilograms more on my ribs when I went home to Germany... But it is not true, the English cannot cook at all.
