The reason the water is being "paused" is not explained. Is this more of the overuse of available resources or something else? Whats the rest of the story?
Basically the Twin Falls canal company is saying that the wells are affecting their water supply.
In short, the aquifer these farms are either extracting from directly, or extracting from the surface water that eventually recharges it, is slowly going dry. They were asked to come up with a water management plan and didn't want to, this crisis is the result.
Expect more of this in the coming decade or two. We farm the desert out West ... it's been stupid since it started. You can fight nature for a while, but she wins eventually.
Now you know how the farmers in the Klamath Basin here in Oregon felt when they shut off their water......Why would you heap this on a country already struggling?
Whoever came up with this plan too shut the water off too 500 thousand acres of ground irrigated farmland in Idaho is not very bright and is not a friend of the people. They I acted this rule immediately after all the ground had been prepared and planted. They could of done it before all the millions of dollars was spent on preparing and planting. I hope this person realizes they are making a big mistake by causing this too happen in this way.

This part of Idaho grows potatoes and hay which feeds the dairy cows. The dairy business is big in that part of the state. This stupidity will affect every person when they go grocery shopping since milk, dairy, cheese, and potatoes are staple foods for most American families. Really feel for the farmers whose crops will dry up and blow away in that desert part of the country.

My better half comes from a family of cattle ranchers from Idaho. We are in Washington state. I love it over there and I love the Palouse❤️I’ve only been there once but I had a grand time with the family at a party in Sweetwater. The truly insane thing is they did not order water from canals that are brought in to be turned off for farmers that get their water that way but well water, this is these farmers and ranchers own water on their own land! As he said its a near record good year for water, rivers and reservoirs are full and there is still a lot of snow melt to come, it makes no sense!

The same thing is happening in California where they estimate up to a million acres could come out of production. In the water district I farm in our ground water level was coming up until they took more water away to protect the delta smelt. Lake Oroville is full yet our allotment is only 40% this year.
This is outrageous and unbelievably callous and cruel. No way!! Idaho is one of the major bread baskets of North America!

We have a good snow pack this year but when you have a few consistent droughts the previous years the aquifer cannot catch up in one good or even 2 good snow packs. What is not mentioned is that the farmers were fully aware of the issue...The recharging of the south eastern Idaho aquifer has been a problem for over a decade or more. They chose to ignore it and continued to increase their profits by farming more land and thus more water required. They shot themselves in the foot on this one. They may be able to farm but not at the large scale they were doing. To keep the water available you have to recharge the system and the demand is greater than the supply. To note: A whopping 40% of all food grown and produced in the U.S. is never eaten (ref: American Farm Bureau Federation). This is at the state level of bureaucracy and not Federal. Idaho respects their farmers and I believe they will come up with a solution but sacrifices must be made. Soybean exports to China will have to stop for now.

Farmers around here stopped farming. Could afford to do it. Trump got elected and slowly the farms started coming back. Biden got in and the farming stopped after his first year in office.
The ground water use for farming in the Western States - especially Colo River water - needs a look. Growing Alfalfa in the desert - makes good money but is just stupid. Saudi Arabia owns alfalfa farms in Yuma - and exports the product to SA Industrial water wells pumping 3000 gals a minute !
If those wells are on the farmer’s property, what gives anybody the right to keep them from using them.

Actually, there are several states doing this. Oregon is doing the same thing, for different reasons. California shut down water supplies some years back and bankrupted a lot of farmers. The land was sold cheap to Chinese consortiums for whom the state immediately allotted water.
