Yeah I agree with what you are saying. The anime was fantastic but because of Togashi's artwork the manga lost something. Amazing video as always swede!! :)
+Lilly Mason all what protagonists can do in this manga is : run away from enemies or be kicked by them , pitiful o.0 ; hunter x hunter is an manga about fights , but : 90% are made of dialogues like in a fucking talk show or a soap opera , 5% made of cowardly escapes of protagonists from their opponents , 3% is made of protagonists that are humiliated by their opponents , the last 2% is made of poor and really labored victories , that always cost the dignity or the health of the winner , seriously , this mangaanime only deserve to stop and be forgotten ; one more thing : after almost one year of pause ,this mangaka still have the disrespectful damn effrontery to do nothing but palm off the usual slew of dialogues ; the biggest humiliation suffered by that handicapped weak of gon , the decisive attack that allowed hisoka to win against him , hisoka said to gon something like: " look to the right " , and what gon decided to do ?? but of course he listened to hisoka , after all he is an opponent , so the most logic thing to do can only be to listen to him -.- , here is the moronic reasoning provided by the rotten brain of gon, something like : " hisoka is my enemy , so if he order me to do something , i have of course to...DO AS HE SAY , because naturally , listen to the order of my enemy is the most logic thing to do ,i mean is obvious , since he is my enemy , then if he tell me to do something , it can only be for my sake , so i absolutely have to listen to him " ; the protagonists and co-protagonists, including main enemies ,physically look like a bunch of side characters , they look pretty anonymous and sloppy -.- , ESPECIALLY gon -.- ; hisoka's standards : a loser that can't decently win a fight even when use all his strength and chose a fishing rod as weapon and a coward that can't be strong if not by stealing the power of other people , wow -.- ; the only occasion when leorio did something different than talk and run away , was during the meeting with the father of gon , and naturally , the only reason why he was able to punch him , is because ging , wasn't read for that hysteric reaction -.- ; but please , if some of you think that i am wrong , then show me all the enormous amount of fights , and i mean proper fights , because , the situation were someone become nuts and confuse himself for a Punching Bag ( gon ) , can't really be considered a fight ( but still , i can't blame him , every time he try to win a battle , he only get humiliations , or even worse , lose a part of his body , seriously , not even that transformation was enough to grant him a proper victory -.- ) ; is a manga that encourage : ingenuity( the protagonist is naive ), cowardice ( every single character in this manga\anime is coward, especially chrollo that can be strong only by stealing other's powers , with the exception of some people that fight alone ,but can barely win , or have to kill themselves , like netero , to think that he was the president of the hunters , really pitiful that he need to kill himself , and only weaklings need to kill themselfs to win a battle ) , mediocrity( gon is the protagonist but is not omnipotent , not even close ), weakness ( gon is bloody weak , all those trainings for what ?? ... FOR A LOST LIMB ) , so in the very end , this manga teach people that be a mediocre coward weakling low life loser idiot good-for-nothing-all show no substance is a good thing
@@PRCAMADNNATROIAPRCDISERPENTEFT so you love those generic fight were the protagonist give his all strenght to fight the antagonist who's strength is much stronger, but by the power of friendship and flashback about the hardship of training the protagonist will win. if you're looking for a generic shonen anime HxH is not for you. Every character in HxH are carefully written and good character development, you can hate some chracters but love some even though they considered as "evil" becuase of their actions that doesn't align with the common trait of a good character but in reality they just follow thier own agenda. There's also a good philosophy about life and society. Every fight are compose of strategies, using the surroundings, using nen which have rules and restrictions, and the unpredictability of the outcome of the fight keeps you want to watch more of HxH. I have so much to say but i don't wanna make a long paragraph.
I think his back is one of his problems, but from my point of view his mind is THE problem he has. I mean, he started struggling way back in time when working on yu yu hakusho. When Togashi talks about those years in interviews it seemed to me that he fell in a really serious depression, and just the other day I was reading an artbook that he made of yyh where he was describing each drawing, and he just seemed so empty, tired and sick of everything that it really made me sad. He definitely doesn't work well with tight schedules, and that was the reason he wanted to end yyh the fastest way possible. The fact that he takes so many hiatuses tells me that he wants to do hunter x hunter right and not suffer in the process, because obviously when you do something under inmense pressure you start to hate it. Also, to me it doesn't make sense comparing him to other mangakas, if Oda or any author from SJ can work well with stress, that's fine, but not every person has the same capabilities and people don't understand that. I agree that he has to work with assistants, but it's notorious that he got help in the recent chapters, so he's not that stubborn about it anymore. Anyway, I prefer him taking the hiatus that he needs instead of him crumbling down and being constantly unhappy like he was when making yyh. PD: to me it's already a masterpiece, but that is a highly biased opinion hahaha. Good video and I like that you express your opinions with respect, something that sadly is lacking these days.
You make a lot of good points. I agree with what you are saying, especially the part about Yogashi wanting to do this series right. It just seems like in the long run, hes been doing more things to hurt it than anything else.
Yes! Yes yes!! You said everything I wanted to say but way better! If Togashi didn't love drawing HxH he wouldn't still be drawing HxH. He does it because he loves it, he just doesn't have the stamina most mangaka have. And there's a reason Jump allows him to do whatever he wants hiatus-wise, and that's because at the end of the day his manga still sells like hotcakes. So he's obviously doing something right.
Togashi is, unfortunately, one of those talented creators who is held back by a complex range of problems. Not only physical limitations (back issues), but also psychological. I recall interviews where he described the anxiety and nausea he suffered while writing Yuyu Hakusho, and it sounded pretty damn awful. In some ways, I can relate to him. However, there's also that issue of pride and ownership; the man just can't deal with having somebody else draw most of his story. So in order to produce chapters, he has to suffer through a creative process that he may very well have lost love for a while back. HXH is fantastic, but I do think it looks kinda bleak for the series, and I wouldn't be shocked if it ends abruptly just as Yuyu Hakusho did (what with the Dark Continent having the same epic scope that YYH's final arc originally did before the sudden change in planning).
Just because of the 2011 adaptation, Hunter x Hunter is a masterpiece, in my opinion. I'm a huge fan of this series but I don't care how long Togashi will pause because I'm so confident that we will see an end to this series. And in the time he doesn't publish any chapters, he has the opportunity to think about the story progression, which gave me the feeling, "Hunter x Hunter can only get better." ~ sorry for my English skills.
tabundo001 I know this a really late response, but if togashi cant finish HxH, madhouse will probably just go the FMA 2003 route and adapt the rest of it.
ranganathan sathyanarayanan there’s a did filth between art and then the filth which is one piece art One piece art isn’t art at all A 5 year old drew it
Mick and Rorty art isn’t subjective The subjectivity of art originates from the people watching it not from the art itself. Therefore whether someone enjoys something is determined by their subjective feelings However one can provide objective proof of what is a flaw in art based on the colour science which the human brain finds hard to comprehend It’s no secret that people dislike the anatomy of the characters specifically the women who shouldn’t be existing by nature of their anatomy One can provide objective evidence to substantiate how it is bad art determined by what the human eye finds confusing One piece simply isn’t good art and it isn’t subjective.
Honestly respect your opinion but I don't think the artwork is a bad as everyone points it out to be. The high level of plot twists in the series and the uniqueness of characters is what makes fans go nuts about it. The art work is a small problem imo
@@miceatah9359 Having Meruem return to life after being nuked to death. Kurapika killing Uvogin after having learned nen only for one year. Kurapika being able to capture the leader of the Phantom Troupe. Kite dying not even halfway through the chimera ant arc. Gon nearly dying after killing Pitou. The fact that Alluka is able to heal without having a cruel backlash. There are probably more ...
His slew of health problems, his pride, and his mental instability are what stop him from continuing the manga either himself or handing the task of artwork to someone else. And at this point, I don't think many of us fans would even care so long as he gets to tell us all the stories he's got planned for this series even if the artwork may turn out a little weird. I hope he comes to his senses and realizes that the possibility of his series just being a huge waste of potential is incredibly likely if he keeps it up at this rate.
It is kind of selfish in my opinion not to let someone else draw for him. I mean it's not like he wouldn't be able to write the story himself, just allow someone else to draw for him. Hell, Ishida brings out a Tokyo Ghoul chapter every week with the only exception being when there is a Japanese holiday. The series only came out in 2011 and it's only 100 chapters behind Hunter X Hunter. The guy is a massive fan of the series, even Togashi let him write and draw a backstory for Hisoka, so why not let him draw the series once he finishes Tokyo Ghoul? Sure the art would be a little different at first, but at this point I don't think anyone cares.
Oh come on, he said himself that he has big plans for the series. Surely he must know at the rate he is travelling none of those big plans are going to come into fruition. As I said, he could still be the one who writes the story, just get someone else to draw for him, that way he gets to rest, we get weekly/monthly chapters, and some lucky person gets to be the illustrator for Hunter X Hunter, everyone wins. The way he is acting now is just like my dad stubbornly refusing help getting shit out of the attic.
EloImFizzy let's be real here. This is a big problem because he wrote him self into a whole saying the world is so big. It's as big as one price if not bigger. Also it's called pride which as gotten him this far.
It got him somewhere alright, it got him a future with a bad back. He takes a few years break to help his back recover, and then does 10 chapters which in turn makes his back go to shit all over again which means he needs to takes a few years break all over again. If he had help from the start maybe his back wouldn't be this bad. At this point he has two choices: 1. Bottle up his pride and get help, which could lead to this being one of the greatest Shonen manga ever. 2. Don't get help and leave his series unfinished, which will lead him to be forever remembered as the stubborn old man who refused to get help. I know I might sound cruel to some, but my brain works more in the logical realm then the emotional one, and his decision to remain prideful just doesn't make any logical sense. Any man who is prideful would surely want to leave behind a good legacy, and his current decision is going to leave him either unremembered, or remembered for all the wrong reasons.
I suppose I'm in the minority on this one, I honestly can look past certain flaws in a series especially if the story is great. Don't get the wrong idea I like what I've read of HxH and plan to read more, with the authors credit it is a little ridiculous that chapters are inconsistent and the art maybe a little off putting but really a majority of it isn't completely terrible. As a new fan of HxH I do hope the series gets an ending but I'm definitely going to be patient about it, great video as always Insidious keep it up!
this video made me tear up a bit. i just binged watched the whole anime and i fell in love with the series and a majority of the cast. There has never been a series where so many of the characters were so endearing. Of course i have my main 3 gon killua and kurapika(dont care for leorio too much but i still like him) but even the minor characters were still a delight to follow around. I have watched yu yu hakusho 10 times and finally decided to pick up hunter hunter and i cried and yelled at my computer so many times during hxh and knowing that this series isnt going to get the development it deserves is honestly heartbreaking to me. I cant even imagine how it must feel to ppl who followed this show a long time ago
don't worry the story still develops hell the later arcs are amazing and creative the problem is that he's taking way too long time the ant arc took him almost 8 years hxh could be the best manga in shonen ever but its the worst when it comes to problems the creator would benefit greatly if he hired a staff and treated him self better he always suffer from back problems and other things its just _hire a staff _go to the doctor more _never put your work over your well being _organize your self better bam!!! that's it problem solved no more waiting a year for a single chapter
Shahen Almutare i mean honestly just hire an art staff. like interview them personally give them 5 really hard test whatever but it’s the least he could do. hxh is so special and it just deserves so much more than multi-year hiatuses
it honestly sucks so much that he isnt able to finish the manga :/ tbh, he probably couldve finished by now...but sadly, as you said, he is stingy with his manga and wants all control of how it goes. i love him, i can handle the artwork, but if this does keep going, we will never be able to see the world of HXH like Yogashi wants us to see..such a shame :( Hopefully he gets his act together and gets some help with the manga! I dont want it to end abruptly
So not really a counter point, but I think the reason Togashi doesn't want to relinquish control is because he is only writing for jump because they gave him complete creative freedom after the disaster that was the end of Yu You Hakusho and his mental state at the conclusion of that manga. He's finally been given the chance to tell a narrative exactly the way he wants to and he desperately wants to hold onto that.
I do think, most of you are being a bit of selfish. It´s his work, his masterpiece, his own, yeah it sucks that may never be completed. But as fans we should let the master make his masterpiece the way he wants, we should be supportive of his decision of making it by himself. I actually think that the pride, and tribulation that he feels when making a chapter is also embeded on every page.
But its his pride that's getting in the way. If he just gave over the artwork to someone else the series could be given the quality it deserves. He could even oversee how the mangaka drew the art, still allowing it be his own work.
I could understand this point if his fucking life partner wasn't a better artist and mangaka than he is.. literally the person he most trusts in the world can finish it for him, and he doesn't take that opportunity, he spends all day playing video-games. Waste of talent.
@@sebaba001 all talk. tired of seeing nagging ppl like u. have u ever even asked yourself if u deserve the talents of one togashi for u to complain like that as if u own the guy?
@@wooliguns Deserve his talent? What are you talking about? There are thousands of great mangakas and billions of possible fans. He is not writing this story for me. He owes it to the world, to himself. Do you think it's alright for a talented story teller to die and not finish his life work because he is too lazy and addicted to video games? Are you defending that? Do you think at 90 years of age on his dead bed he won't wish he didn't waste 20 years of his life playing RPGs and instead finished the work people will remember him for for the rest of history? He owes it to HIMSELF. It's the same as top level athletes who just become fat and lose their titles and records and belts out of pure laziness. Waste of talent is not to be celebrated.
People are just so entitled these days geez rather than complaining about the art you should just enjoy it for what it is rather than tearing his work down for what it isn't I think it looks fine I mean maybe compared to his peers its not good but if thats what you want go read some of those other titles instead. Togashi is doing Togashi and I can't believe that people are saying that he should turn his creation over to someone else because he can't churn the work out like they want him to. Gosh why don't you just ask him to give his child up for adoption too.
Just expressing my thoughts and opinion. Never said they have to be agreed with. But really, its fine man, love HxH and never let anyone tell you otherwise! Don't want to be a divisive force, that was never my goal with this channel.
I'm glad you were able to enjoy Hunter x Hunter through the anime, but I'm curious how come it felt different in the manga to you. For me I started with the 99 Anime version, before the 2011 reboot was made, and then went to the manga. While the art did take time to get used to I eventually did enjoy what his unique vision is because the story was strong enough to pull me through it. My two cents on this is that I always thought the manga was great, and I really liked his art style, contrary to popular belief. What I like about it is that he basicallly changes it for each arc, and his style reflects the strong suits and important parts of the arc. For example, people love to hate the Chimera Ant arc because it took 8 years to publish and the art was chicken scratch. The way I see it is that he made the character designs simpler so that he could tap into the emotional spectrum. I can't see what he did in the CA arc, like those pages blotted with black ink to show Gon's furocity, used in the previous arcs. And I felt more emotional by the end. Plus, during each hiatus he tries to punch up the artwork in the volumes that are going to be released. As to Togashi's many hiatus' and back problems...I'm glad he's taking his time. I mean he's not not working on Hunter x Hunter while recovering. He's thinking about the plot, he's probably outlining his story. HxH is his passion project, so it's hard for me to think he'd stop working, or at least thinking, about it while on hiatus. Also, his story arcs are getting much more complicated with each character being introduced and his focus shifting a little more on the political side on how the HxH universe works. There's a lot of thought that needs to be planned out that once a week chapters would just ruin with how little time he'll have. Take again the CA arc. A good portion of that takes place in what 5-10 minutes? He had to trace and show what each character had to do through those few minutes of the invasion, and that took numerous chapters to describe such a short amount of time. In short, and sorry for this abnoxiously long comments, I'm in the minority where I can take his breaks, and because this is his passion project (he was going to quit after Yu Yu Hakusho) I'm willing to wait for him. I'm not too excited about giving him an artist to work with. I feel like that would cut something out of his work and at that point he'll just be the fans bitch.
I can re-read the manga series over and over and never lose the enjoyment out of it. I love HxH and even if he doesn't complete it I'll still be happy with what he gave me.
Some of those chapters in the chimera ant arc were bad because he was rushed by Shueisha to release the chapters each week. The man draws this, doesn't do it digitally remember that.
Man you are so right. I have hoped and prayed that he would just do the storyboards and give artwork control to someone that has a similar style to his or something along those lines... I think I heard that even shonen jump was getting fed up with him and that they would relinquish his control from the manga and have the story continue with another artist. You are so right that his universe is as big as many out there, one piece, bleach, naruto, berserk etc to name a few and we still haven't even scratched the surface!!! That's what pisses me off if for no other reason think about the fans.. And how loyal they have been.
Lol, that title is really misleading. So the Hunter x Hunter manga lost a lot of its potential due to its artwork and release dates? I can kinda agree that the slow releases really drag down the enjoyment, but from a crirtical perspective, it doesn't lose out. That's like saying Ping Pong The Animation didn't live up to its potential due to the eccentric artstyle. Pretty superficial, as it doesn't take away from the things it does *right*. Anyways, the video itself wasn't half bad, keep it up dude!
Absolutely disagree. Consistency and quality are very important for a manga series. Togashi's art in some chapters is horrid, and his hiatuses last FOREVER. Of course these things would drag down the overall quality of a series, how could they not?
@@kylebell2897 what? if you read it weekly then maybe yea. but when you binge read it or watch the anime i dont see how it would drag the quality down. besides art is subjective. I adore his artstyle.
@@kylebell2897 His hiatuses last 7-8 months at worst now, and his artwork drop in quality occasionally, yes, but in the same chapter in the video there are masterpieces. Reality is, a good story needs its time to be made: if you want recycled gargabe all over again BUT with consistent drawings and schedules, just look at every other big shonen in jump.
Did you ever finish the anime? Its so good. It's too bad that we may never get an ending because Togashi is held up with Dragon Que-- ahem--- back problems.
I got into the anime first and LOVED IT. It's like top 5 for me. Might of had a different experience if I got into the manga first, but I actually really enjoy the manga and for some reason don't share a lot of negative feelings toward it at all. The art can be pretty rough for sure, but idk I still really fuck with it haha. Definitely a hit or miss tho!
it has been said that Togashi is still working on the series during hiatuses. i am confident we will see this series out to the end but it will take quite some time. Also i personally love Togashi's art-style in HxH and wouldn't want to see anyone else draw it. Everything in the current arc has been drawn really well. What i like most about Togashi's art is that it can be simplistic and cartoony or very detailed whenever it needs to. His art does get lazy at times but the majority of the series is drawn well.
Right one of the most complex fights I have ever seen was Hisoka vs Chrollo, it was in depth and had no issues with its strategy and the unique amount of thought that went into each stroke of the fight would have taken me months to figure and piece out. Not only is his back challenged designing such an aesthetic but his mind is also challenged creating a series with complex fights and rules such as Nen.
Imo the manga gets good at volume 8 but the artwork is really the only thing dragging it on. With Togashi’s level of writing and deep complex story telling he can certainly let go of his artwork even though I actually enjoy it sometimes
Yea sometimes I agree coz when I pick up a character in a page from the manga, Kurapika for instance, I can sketch him out in IDK, 5~10 mins with some colouring
the thing is, that Togashi himself said that he couldn't draw the same always, that he was impressed that other mangakas mantained their style through hundreds of chapters. He, on the other hand, couldn't. Personally, i like his changing artstyle, its seems more natural to me that a person, while he grows and changes, changes his artsyle too. Is a way of knowing another part of him
I guess that's one way to look at it. However, I think it has more to do with his inconsistency. Its not just that he has a changing art style, its that some chapters are not finished when they're published.
That's a bit of a bad mentality to have for manga. If the artwork isn't important then why wouldn't the mangaka just make it into a book. Also there are more problems with the hunter x hunter manga than just the artwork, Togashi crams far too many words into each individual panel and has a very roundabout way of explaining things going beyond being thorough to the point of being tedious to read (at least for English versions I don't know if this makes it better for the Japanese version)
I agree. I still think drawing is just a small part of the work overal because creating story board( characters, dialog and story) took much much more time. When he nails it down, the drawing is actually taking very little time compare to the time he thinks of story progression. However, it would be a huge help if he allows other artist to help him draw some workload.
There is a wonderful beauty to the raw creative genius of this manga. The mangaka is pressuring himself to deal with a narrative so complex that he is sometimes sketching rather than fleshing out his ideas. I absolutely celebrate that because it is such a rare thing to see a mangaka forego a nice, clean visual style in favour of something that really expresses his thoughts and ideas, regardless of how imperfect they are.
I have found that true fans of the series love it not only in spite of its many flaws, but also in a way, because of them. So many aspects of the series can be described as "Togashi doesn't give a fuck", from the story structure to the concepts, characters, or the art. Togashi does and focus on whatever he likes at the moment. Hunter x hunter is an overflowing stream of ideas expanding in the blue sky, free, bold and unbothered. In that sense, it is a form of artistic genius.
I really feel like this series is not gonna end , atleast not for a very long time because to me this series is far from over considering a lot of goals have yet to be accomplished and with the dark continent , there's a lot to be explored so I doubt it's even half way finished unless he's said how far into the story is completed . Maybe he should have somebody else draw the series for him if his health is that bad . Idk a lot about his health because I haven't checked a lot into it yet but I know he drops like 1 volume every year and then goes on hiatus but how come he doesn't just make hxh into a monthly manga ? Wouldn't that give him more resting time ? Or take breaks every other chapter instead of doing yearly hiatuses ? This story just really does feel like a masterpiece that is never gonna get a conclusion at this rate and I love togashi as a writer and a person and I don't want to see him suffer but at the same time it's not fair to the fans who wait all the time for hxh just to get 1 volume a year or every two years . There has to be a middle ground atleast I think .
Thank you so much for this video. I've been extremely hesitant about buying the manga (I've already started buying the 2011 blu-rays) and now I feel more confident in not purchasing the manga unless he finishes it. Just in case you were talking about the original, was the anime you watched Hunter x Hunter 2011? I didn't see it in the description or hear which series you watched in the video and I'm really curious how people who watched it felt about the 90's anime.
I think we should respect his creative opinion without criticising it. If he feels only he can do it the way he wants, who are you to criticise. Writing is a very intimate process and it is in the writers complete domain. Don’t rush art, you’ll only be disappointed.
I’m a little late but to those who are seeing this Togashi has said that he’s thinking of getting a different artists and his editors back him up on on this. As of right now no one knows what’ll happen
I wish Togashi would just focus the writing, even just releasing light novels if that's what it takes. See the latest chapters and see how many giant text boxes he's had
I've only read a couple Manga of HxH just yet and I've seen half of the anime but I'm liking it so far but I have always heard mixed feelings but I wanted to see it for myself and since I liked the anime I was sure I'd like the Manga as well. I just really like the characters. Especially the main four. Just them interracting is just fun and great. I'll see how long I like the Manga. I never heard anything about the Mangaka. I just never read up on it but thanks for telling me about the Mangaka and why it is so slow going. Maybe he should have gotten another person into this story for the art or just for help. Collaborating like other Mangaka do but ah well. Great video as always :)
Yeah I think the consensus is that he should try to get some help, but he doesn't want to relinquish any creator control. Also, he suffers from chronic stress as well so that also hinders his ability to write chapters. He just has a lot of stuff he has to deal with, and its unfortunate because HxH could've been the greatest shounen manga ever written.
Tyler Redick Well it's simply a choice between watching one of the greatest anime of all time, or reading an incredible story but with lots of artistic inconsistencies potentially ruining the image of what should only be described as THE BEST shonen manga.
I will say that Yogashi's page layout is generally awesome, but yeah, the artwork looks incomplete almost all the time. The most frustrating thing about the art for me is that every once in a while you get a glimpse at something that looks far more than just his half-baked line technique and actually looks finished/polished. But then right next to it you're reminded of the average visual state of this manga which is ass.
Sure the art isn't great, but that does not mean the story is bad as well. I have not read the manga, but I'm looking into it and I value your opinion.
I agree. He really should pass on the series. Whether its to his wife, someone he can obviously trust, or another artist the series is simply being wasted. This isn't the first time Togashi has done something like this. He abruptly ended Yu Yu Hakusho.
I can't help but disagree with the statement that his art in the Chimera ant arc was "unfinished" or "like a rough draft" 3:59 bruh Just because of the sketchy stylized outlines, the panel on the left is thoroughly cross hatched and even if you think that doesn't display a strong grasp of illustration, I don't see how you can make the argument that this is "unfinished". Even in good health, a lot of hunter x hunter features simplified scenes and simple often missing backgrounds. But there's still a clear amount of effort put in to create images like these. It's more difficult than you would think to boil a fight scene down and convey only the purest details- and its intentional. (Most of the time, there are some panels that are obviously rushed but Togashi went back and fixed some of it, and these are a minority. An annoying minority but still a readable one.)
Let’s hope he pushes his pride away and gets predecessor to take in his mantle if his health becomes too bad to bare, just like what Toriyama did his predecessor is Toyotaro wand is doing an amazing job
I only watched the Hunter x Hunter anime this year, tbh i doubted that it would be good and was expecting it to be boring, however it was the complete opposite, and despite its short length, i can still say that its a complete masterpiece and is the best anime alongside Naruto, i only realised how good it was after it finished and i remembered all the episodes and how emotional and intense they were, and Gons journey, its just an excellent piece of work, Its very unfortunate that Togashi has being suffering for so long and i wish all the best for him. But even though hes been working on it for a long time and i dont blame him for being protective of his work, i just hope that as a favour to the fans that Togashi can allow a trusted artist to handle the artwork, so he can focus on the storyline, in order to allow the continuation of the anime.
if he gets help with artwork, the artist would feel entitled to have creative imput. Something he tries to avoid by working by himself, It could be something simple, like the pose or facial expression of a character- but already that's stemming from his envisions in what he wants to convey to his audience. I get the importance of sharing his workload, but he honestly is the best writer with his commitment to working alone to tell his story; I respect/admire him for that, only togashi-sama could manage this
I completely agree with you, as shallow as it may seem visuals are extremely important for me personally to be interested in an anime or manga, so the hxh manga just really doesn't do it for me. But damn the anime knocks it out of the park in the visuals department
I don't think that his whole manga looks like a rough draft. I think there are some pages that look absolutely stunning. But I do agree that it does look unfinished on some places. Maybe if he were working on a monthly schedule instead of a weekly one he could continue to make quality chapters regularly? Lots of series do monthly release. The first one to come to mind is attack on titan, and I believe Full teal Alchemist and Soul Eater were also released this way. These manga (particularly the later two) look amazing and it's not because they are more talented than HunterXHunter's mangaka. They just have more time. Yes, the chapters are longer, but not so much that it would be just as stressful as pumping them out weekly. If I ever commit to making a comic series, I'm definitely doing a monthly schedule.
I agree. There are a lot of chapters (especially early on) where the series looks fairly good. Its just that its all over the place, some chapters look good and others look like a rough draft.
You know he did Yu Yu Hakusho as well right? He has been doing Mangas as far back as the 80s. It is a shame he has back problems but with that said how many manga authors can do 2 master pieces? I will tell you none lmao
Naoki Urasawa has 3. Tsugumi Ohba has 2. Takehiko Inoue has 3. I get your point, but that doesn't change the fact that he still could relinquish control of the art.
Here's a thought. He can't relinquish control of his creative work. And no, not because of any corporate reasons, I'm sure Shonen Jump would love to have someone else take over... What I'm saying is that, like you said in this video, a lot of his art barely passes as storyboard art. If he gives artistic control to other people, it still doesn't change the fact that Togashi still has to draw storyboards... It doesn't solve the core problem that the drawing process and everything gives him back pains. He can't really just do the Bakuman thing of writing his story out without a storyboard and have them use that to draw the manga from scratch either because a lot of the storytelling and fight choreography in a shonen battle manga can only be told through the art.
Back problems shouldn't stop you from drawing tbh. You could just get a standing table so you don't have to sit for long hours or at least take breaks while working and get up every once in a while so you can work on it. Hell instead of rushing through working on it for 3 weeks straight just do it monthly or bi-monthly.
Its actually a lot more complicated than back problems. If you look at interviews from him, he'll communicate that its more stress related than anything else. He's been unable to draw because the industry pushes you so hard, and his body just hasn't been able to keep up with it, to the point that he physically feels like throwing up at the idea of drawing. Some artists can work in the crazy atmosphere that the industry produces, but Togashi isn't one of those people
if it's stress related he could've been drawing a shit tons of chapters during his hiatuses.. then when he gets back in touch with the editors he doesn't tell them he has 100 chapters ready and go on his own pace while delivering old, already made chapters it's a mixture of back pain, stress, pride and laziness/videogame addiction
low key, you're right. even if I love hunter x hunter, the manga won't ever really finish unless he gives up his control. However, it's still the best shounen
Honestly, let Ishida do the art for Hunter x Hunter, have Naoko Takeuchi (Author of Sailor Moon) (I might have the name wrong.) should be the assistants for the Hunter x Hunter Manga. I want to see this Manga finished and the art would be loads better. Its my favorite Shounen of all times next to JoJo. I'm hoping it gets finishes.
I... don't know how to feel about this video. Is the problem against Togashi's art that the backgrounds aren't always complete in a page section? I've always liked how he would draw characters, but I don't think that is the problem fans of HXH have here.
His pride is not going to allow anyone to draw it and I can understand where he is coming form. Also you for get it take him 2 to 3 times longer because he draws EVERYTHING.
I really don't agree with much of what you say in this other than that HunterXHunter will never end. HunterXHunter does have many chapter that are semi unfinished but I feel that the panels you used to show this were pretty bad examples. I really like Togashis use of more sketchy lines he uses when showing a character when they have a murderous intent, it shows that the character is basically insane and not being held back by his own body(the lines). id also say that many other weekly artists have similar problems with the art (although not as much as Togashi has) and his new way of righting the manga at about one volume a year has really helped improve the art of the series in the more recent arcs. Also about how you said he said hire artists to help him with making it look better, I do understand were your coming from but I feel like Togashi as a person would never want that. You could say its because hes selfish, and hey your probably right, its pretty obvious he can be a stubborn person as he was able to make HunterXhunter basically the only ShonenJump writer get such long Hiatuses, but i also feel this parallels him to the main character of HunterxHunter Gon. It almost feels like he put his own stubbornness into Gon as how they wont back down easily when they have there mind on something, and for Togashi I feel thats making and completing HunterXHunter, and having it be his own manga that he accomplished on his own. Sadly I feel like at the rate hes going at he may be dead before it ends, but I feel like as long as he keeps going and righting a quality story HunterXHunter will be a Masterpiece, (or at least to me).
I don't understand what you're trying to say here. You said you didn't enjoy reading hunter x hunter and only enjoyed the anime, but then you said the manga would be a masterpiece if not for the scheduling issues. I don't get how this would fix the problem of not enjoying what he does write. Are you just hoping for it to be adapted?
That's not quite how I phrased it. I said that the manga has suffered because of Togashi's health, causing irregular release dates and his artwork to suffer tremendously. If Togashi released the manga regularly and had consistently good art the series could be considered a masterpiece. I enjoy the anime because it takes the genius of Togashi's writing and puts into a world that feels alive, unlike Togashi's art, which quite often feels like rough drafts. I just meant that the overall series has suffered, and that HxH could've been as popular as One Piece is today.
I see thanks for clarifying. I agree with you as much as I can without having read the manga, since those were the reasons I didn't buy it. p.s. I've been enjoying looking through your channel since my first comment. I think I got some good recommendations too. :)
IMO I like to see the person who's doing the drawing for the Dragon Ball Super manga to do the drawing for HxH manga. Say what you will about the Super series (its good, bad, etc. whatever) but the manga has had great drawing IMO. Just look at the current manga. As for the writing, Togashi can still do that but just let someone else take over the drawing. This series is too good to be on constant breaks. These hiatus breaks is like Ross & Rachel's relationship from Friends: *ITS ANYWAYS ON A BREAK*
We all agree he should take at least one assistant who would help him with the drawings. But if he is too stuborn, what can we do but wait and forget we used to love this manga?
I love Togashis style it has so much character and how he can do the really creepy portraits with the shading really sets the tone on some scenes I much prefer the manga the anime feels stagnant to me in comparison
@@ninjavirus3534 I'm watching the show I hardly watched when it was on TV: Full metal alchemist.. I'm digging it! I also watch the one I can't pronounce.. about a school that Gamble's lol
@@ninjavirus3534 watching gon go through hunter training was like I got to watch Ash become a trainer all over again lol I love the early episodes when he's figuring everything out, and who to trust.. the constant introspection of the characters is what really drew me into the series.
My first anime was HxH, the Naruto then jjba. I read the Jojo Manga first and then the hunter x hunter Manga. I like the Jojo Manga more than the adaptation, but it's reverse for hunter x hunter. It's not bad by any means it's just like the anime is what the Manga was trying to show in its fullest imo.
My two cents: I understand and I agree with you that it is frustrating, HxH could have been very good. However, as an artist and an aspiring comic book artist, I could never give up creative control. I can't see myself doing that, ever. Artists invest so much time into their work, every piece holds a special in your heart. I would never let someone draw my ideas. In the case of comics/manga, those characters almost become like your children. I also wanted to mention that Togashi style seems very sketchy to begin with. YuYu Hakusho had a similar look to it. I know HxH is even more sketchy. I don't care if you like his art or not that is your opinion but maybe that is the look Togashi is going for. I don't think he cares about making his art as polished as Takeshi Obata. Art, even manga, comes in many different styles. This is just my thoughts, take it or leave it :)
I respect what your saying, and I'm sure that's exactly why he doesn't want to give up creator control. However, may be scratchy by nature, but some chapters are the way they are because he runs out of time and has to rush the chapter. Especially when the consistency is all over the place. Some chapters look really good, but others look like drafts. Its more than just a style, its an inability to complete what's required in the amount of time given.
True, I'm not going to argue with that. I don't know if this was talked about with his editor but maybe HxH could be moved to biweekly, or even monthly. Then he would have more time. Of course he may have a Mashiro from Bakuman attiude where he feels he has to draw it in a week. Oh well
I wouldn't let the art ruin my opinion on it just because of the great story and how well he thinks out every aspect. But I do agree the art is lacking comparing to the masterpiece of the art in Berserk.
I prefer ONE's art over Togashi's because Togashi's changes so much and ONE's stays consistent. I can't read Shingeki no Kyojin because its art bothers me, but the anime looks so much better.
I believe he's already stated that he knows how Hunter x Hunter will end. So he knows exactly where he wants to take the series, now it's just a matter of getting there.
I think it's sad that there is not more of it, but I don't think that makes it any worse, it just means there is less material. You wouldn't have said about One Piece 10 years ago "yeah it's pretty cool but it only has 300 chapters :v". That there aren't as many chapters as there should be should have no bearing in the evaluation of the content. Yeah, it sucks that we only have 350~ish chapters after almost 20 years but so what? Aren't those 350~ish chapters the fucking best shit ever? That's what counts to me. And about the art style, it's just preference. Personally I really really like sketchy art style which is why I love HxH and Tokyo Ghoul, but I also like clean lines, which is why I like Bleach (I read it for the art alone, I hated everything else, that's how much I like Kubo's drawings) and My Hero Academia. For me, HxH IS a masterpiece, the fact that it doesn't have as many chapters as it should is just meta-data, irrelevant to the piece itself.
Are you serious? There's no comparing HxH art and Tokyo Ghoul art. HxH art is just plain BAD. Whereas Tokyo Ghoul actually looks like a final draft. Also, of course you wouldn't have said that about OP 10 years ago, because it was 10 years ago! HxH is almost two decades old and it ONLY has 350 chapters. That's absolutely nothing compared to other long running series that have been going on for the same amount of time.
@@AmeerBANKAI HxH is brilliant when it comes to shounen. Yoshihiro Togashi has been suffering from chronic back issues for years. Yes his laziness has contributed to it, but he really does have a terrible back from drawing manga hunched over for decades.
Yeah I agree with what you are saying. The anime was fantastic but because of Togashi's artwork the manga lost something. Amazing video as always swede!! :)
I just wish he could be even a little more consistent! I mean only 360 chapters since '98!

Pastry Agree let's be honest Oda himself is not in good health
Yes!
Pastry I can't agree more
Pastry why doesn't he make it monthly? Or have someone else draw his stuff while he directs them.
If he dies before he finishes it I'll be mad for the rest of my fucking life.
Hell, I'd be mad in the afterlife too.
tabundo001 I know this a really late response, but if togashi cant finish HxH, madhouse will probably just go the FMA 2003 route and adapt the rest of it.

The subjectivity of art originates from the people watching it not from the art itself.
Therefore whether someone enjoys something is determined by their subjective feelings
However one can provide objective proof of what is a flaw in art based on the colour science which the human brain finds hard to comprehend
It’s no secret that people dislike the anatomy of the characters specifically the women who shouldn’t be existing by nature of their anatomy
One can provide objective evidence to substantiate how it is bad art determined by what the human eye finds confusing

Daniel Lopez artwork is not terrible
EloImFizzy its his personal work tho i understand
EloImFizzy it's HIS.
At this point he has two choices:
I think that the manga won't go the way he wants if he lets someone else draw it. that's what he thinks.

Would it even be possible to create an ending?

Supposedly Togashi and his wife both know the ending.
this video made me tear up a bit. i just binged watched the whole anime and i fell in love with the series and a majority of the cast. I cant even imagine how it must feel to ppl who followed this show a long time ago
don't worry the story still develops hell the later arcs are amazing and creative the problem is that he's taking way too long time the ant arc took him almost 8 years hxh could be the best manga in shonen ever but its the worst when it comes to problems the creator would benefit greatly if he hired a staff and treated him self better he always suffer from back problems and other things its just
_hire a staff
_go to the doctor more
_never put your work over your well being
_organize your self better
bam!!! that's it problem solved no more waiting a year for a single chapter
Togashi's artwork is unique i personally like it

Actually in the current arc...
THANK YOU SWEDE! Finally a big youtuber who says what I've been thinking for years.

People are just so entitled these days geez rather than complaining about the art you should just enjoy it for what it is rather than tearing his work down for what it isn't I think it looks fine I mean maybe compared to his peers its not good but if thats what you want go read some of those other titles instead.
Just imagine if one's one punch man was published .
If Yusuke Murata drew HxH I would be in Heaven!!
I wish ! his new series Dr stone and the art work in one punch man if he did hxh I'm pretty sure he would have back problems too
Murray doesn't draw Dr. Stone
Oops got the author and artist mixed up
Nice video InsidiousSwede!
Thanks!
Kyle Bell not quite horrid. Just mediocre.
Your Mom Whoever said horrid?
@@kylebell2897 what? if you read it weekly then maybe yea. but when you binge read it or watch the anime i dont see how it would drag the quality down. besides art is subjective. I adore his artstyle.
@@kylebell2897 His hiatuses last 7-8 months at worst now, and his artwork drop in quality occasionally, yes, but in the same chapter in the video there are masterpieces.
Reality is, a good story needs its time to be made: if you want recycled gargabe all over again BUT with consistent drawings and schedules, just look at every other big shonen in jump.
In a recent interview he said that he doesn’t mind someone else drawing for him, so that’s a good update
Guys we need to invent immortality soon, I really want to see Hunter x Hunter end
What video editor do you use?
it has been said that Togashi is still working on the series during hiatuses. i am confident we will see this series out to the end but it will take quite some time.
Pretty much agree except for the art i find it charming, well most of the time anyway
No I agree. A lot of times the art looks good. Its just the inconsistency that kills me inside.
Imo the manga gets good at volume 8 but the artwork is really the only thing dragging it on. With Togashi’s level of writing and deep complex story telling he can certainly let go of his artwork even though I actually enjoy it sometimes
Yea sometimes I agree coz when I pick up a character in a page from the manga, Kurapika for instance, I can sketch him out in IDK, 5~10 mins with some colouring
idc what u ppl say. i dont wanna see somebody else draw Togashis work.
Do you do Gundam blood orphans reviews?
Sorry, no I do not. Why?
Just asking. It's one of my favorites. You should do a review on it.
the thing is, that Togashi himself said that he couldn't draw the same always, that he was impressed that other mangakas mantained their style through hundreds of chapters.
He isn’t the best Mangaka artist but it’s like video games. True gamers don’t play for graphics, they play for the gameplay.
Amazing video, amazing series. I agree with what you said, but I guess it doesn't really bother me anymore.
I like your opinion, but I also get where he's coming from being an artist, hopefully things work out :)
Yeah I was referring to the 2011 anime.
InsidiousSwede Thanks for letting me know!
I really want to start HxH. But would it be better if I just decided to watch the anime? Does anyone have any advice?
Tyler Redick Well it's simply a choice between watching one of the greatest anime of all time, or reading an incredible story but with lots of artistic inconsistencies potentially ruining the image of what should only be described as THE BEST shonen manga.
How does the art look unfinished? I don't understand.
Don't worry, I read that his wife(the artist of sailor moon) will be illustrating for him, and Mr. Togashi does the writing.
Sure the art isn't great, but that does not mean the story is bad as well. I have not read the manga, but I'm looking into it and I value your opinion.
What ur saying totally makes sense and i would agree with u, but i hate that guys writing so he can just go on hiatus forever for all i care hehe.
I agree. He really should pass on the series. Whether its to his wife, someone he can obviously trust, or another artist the series is simply being wasted.
This isn't the first time Togashi has done something like this. He abruptly ended Yu Yu Hakusho.
I can't help but disagree with the statement that his art in the Chimera ant arc was "unfinished" or "like a rough draft"
3:59 bruh
Just because of the sketchy stylized outlines, the panel on the left is thoroughly cross hatched and even if you think that doesn't display a strong grasp of illustration, I don't see how you can make the argument that this is "unfinished".
I do agree that Togashi is holding back the series in some ways
I also agree that he should consider hiring help
Let’s hope he pushes his pride away and gets predecessor to take in his mantle if his health becomes too bad to bare, just like what Toriyama did his predecessor is Toyotaro wand is doing an amazing job
Hunter x Hunter is a masterpiece to me and is my second favorite anime and manga of all time
Will of D. Is One Piece #1?
And that 1#'d be one piece okay
Is the hunter hunter anime finished
Its over in the sense that there are no plans for more episodes. But if Togashi comes back and gets enough chapters out the anime should continue.
"The Masterpiece That Never Was", shouldn't it be "The Masterpiece That Never Will Be?"
@Melon Pan nah it's just decent
@Melon Pan Huh
@Melon Pan sorry it's better than decent like an 7.5 probably 8/10
if he gets help with artwork, the artist would feel entitled to have creative imput. Something he tries to avoid by working by himself, It could be something simple, like the pose or facial expression of a character- but already that's stemming from his envisions in what he wants to convey to his audience. I get the importance of sharing his workload, but he honestly is the best writer with his commitment to working alone to tell his story; I respect/admire him for that, only togashi-sama could manage this
The only way togashi would let someone help, is if he REALLY trusts them. I hope that will come...
Who knows? The Illistrator mentions might include Ishida-sama? That'd be a happy surprise
I completely agree with you, as shallow as it may seem visuals are extremely important for me personally to be interested in an anime or manga, so the hxh manga just really doesn't do it for me. But damn the anime knocks it out of the park in the visuals department
The art can be bad sometimes but that doesn't prevent it from being a masterpiece.
just imagine one of the animators of the 2011 Hutner x Hunter anime would draw the manga and togashi would focus on the story.
why did (togashi) kill his coolest character off with poisoning
True.
Oh RIP I guess that,s what I get for being a Fan Boy lmfao
Hey man I completely understand. You love the series.
Drawing just storyboards doesn't take nearly as long as a final draft. True its not a perfect solution, but its better than the current one.
Some artists can work in the crazy atmosphere that the industry produces, but Togashi isn't one of those people
I'm sure that he works on it slowly during the hiatus'. If he didn't do anything until he went back to work then he's just aggravating his problems.
if it's stress related he could've been drawing a shit tons of chapters during his hiatuses.. then when he gets back in touch with the editors he doesn't tell them he has 100 chapters ready and go on his own pace while delivering old, already made chapters
it's a mixture of back pain, stress, pride and laziness/videogame addiction
low key, you're right. even if I love hunter x hunter, the manga won't ever really finish unless he gives up his control.
48 dislikes by blind fans who overlook the negatives of their favorite series. Everything he said is TRUE.
Damn those DLs Swede. People seriously need to realize this is an opinion. And a valid one at that!
When or if he finishes the dark continent arc I hope we see another season of the anime, even if it is short.
That’s why we call him the George RR Martin of anime.
you're streching it dude
I... don't know how to feel about this video.
+Hisoka Hey thanks for checking around the rest of my channel. Hope you continue to do so :)
Will do! :D
WE`RE NOT GONNA GET A GOOD ENDING, ARE WE?
IMO I like to see the person who's doing the drawing for the Dragon Ball Super manga to do the drawing for HxH manga.
Say what you will about the Super series
(its good, bad, etc. whatever)
but the manga has had great drawing IMO.
Yeah, fair point. All we CAN do is wait, and debate perhaps..
I love Togashis style it has so much character and how he can do the really creepy portraits with the shading really sets the tone on some scenes I much prefer the manga the anime feels stagnant to me in comparison
Hunter Hunter drew me into the manga world.
Right man I don't get why people say the art is bad is fantastic
My two cents:
I understand and I agree with you that it is frustrating, HxH could have been very good.
I can't even imagine if he had already done 800 chapters
It never even occurred to me he might have that much planned
But he easily could
I believe he's already stated that he knows how Hunter x Hunter will end. So he knows exactly where he wants to take the series, now it's just a matter of getting there.
Very true man, the dark continent looks so amazing but we ain't ever gonna see it...
it's shonen jump fault they didn't let him get a break
Even if he just let artist do a draft of how it goes and then gives an ok on it this would go a lot faster!
HxH > All
I think it's sad that there is not more of it, but I don't think that makes it any worse, it just means there is less material.
I'm amazed you can keep with tokyo ghoul given your poor reading comprehension skills.
The anime is a masterpiece though imo
good joke
