It's great that Amal still makes these carbs for our bikes. I recently helped a friend put a new monobloc on his 57 Trophy. The bike wasn't running great on the old carb, but with the new one it started right up and ran like a champ.
Wow! Knowing (now!) that I can buy a brand new Amal carb......The old Ariel Cyclone might be getting an early Christmas present this year! And yes....as noted below, Triumphs always did have beautiful styling....
I've worked on Amal carbs a good bit, never seen a new one fitted. That was nice, good to hear it fire right up and just need a bit of fiddling. That bike really sounds good. Thanks! I used to have a 64 TR6R, and in my experience, the single carb was always much easier to keep exactly right. I was riding with a couple guys with two carbs and enough wear they had to fiddle with them during rides. We couldn't afford "new carbs" back then, fifty years ago. Thanks for sharing this.
Excellent video! Thanks Mike! Sounds great with the new carb! I had dual amal concentrics on my Norton MK2 which I'd built some confidence adjusting. When I got my 53 Triumph 6T it had dual amals as well and I didn't think that much about it. Once I got it on the road I spent a long time futzing with them and just couldn't get the right balance. After struggling with jets etc I went back and forth with Ace with questions about how they should be jetted. The patient Ace guys kept replying with increasingly strong statements that the RIGHT carb for the bike was the 276 pre-mono... Finally I listened and went back to a new original one. Its run soooo much better ever since. Lesson learned - I'd spent more time and money trying to get the wrong carb right then just trusting the original engineering and getting the right carb on the bike. Thanks for sharing your experience here!
Answered all my questions (main one was 'does it really need a choke?') I'm road-readying an extremely used B40, and about the only thing I spent real money on was the carb. It had a different Amal to stock and being an SS90 it made sense to go with the monobloc, but what really clinched it was the state of the fuel tank. It took rust remover, acetone, petrol and big bolts, lots of shaking and three sessions of electrolysis before it was fit for use.
She is a thing of beauty! I've found sleeping old carbs & replacing with new Amals is definitely the way to go. The new slides are so much better. Also definitely no need for Chokes . Beautiful Trumpy Mike👍
Had to charge the carburetor on my 1969 tr-6r 650 . The guy at the shop said it was bad idle to high. Put the new one in same problem ! The asshole made the cable to short !! I was only sixteen learned my lesson well . Brought the bike from my next door neighbor for $175.00 Had to do top end. Nice first bike. 74 cab 750 ,1978 Ducati 900 gets, 1980 motoguzzi sp 1000 Fun days . 🏍
When Burlen/Amal released their premier concentrics,I wasted no time, fitting a pair to my Royal Enfield.I also did away with the choke. No more fiddling, set it and done.Perfect idle now! Mike, would you consider doing a tutorial on making and or modifying control cables, so as to optimize the length,to suit any particular machine? I really enjoy your videos.
Thanks very much Billy. I did a cable video recently for the Vincent. I've included a link to the video below and hope it will be helpful. It was a pretty fiddly job, but it worked out okay in the end. Looking back, I'm glad that I did it, but there is a lot to be said for buying standard off-the-shelf cables that are made by the professionals. Or alternatively, have the professionals make your custom cables to order. Best wishes, Mike. ua-cam.com/video/kB5Y3nIcGZw/v-deo.html
Great video, again. Love the detail. And for anyone intimidated by the thought of replacing a carb, this should give them the confidence to go ahead and do it.
I overhauled the Concentrics on my 73 Tiger 750 and 72 Daytona. They were better, and usable, but after a few thousand miles bought new Amal Premiers, pre-jetted from Burlen. Perfect. Tickover and pickup is fine, WOT fine. Not cheap, but you know that new carbs just work and if there's still a problem, it's most likely not the carbs.
Nice Mike!!!!!! Love that bike!! I remember when you built the beauty!!! You waited a while before you showed this one to us !!! Enjoyed!!! Take care and God Bless!!!
Many thanks William. Yes can you believe it that it was over 8 years ago. I don't think I knew what UA-cam was back then… It was a blog before the video started rolling 😉 best wishes, Mike
Thanks Dave, the clutch is all done now and I'm really pleased with the results. There is another video but it was a pretty simple fix. The springs simply weren't lined up correctly. Hope all is well, cheers, Mike
Hi Sara, I'm still trying to find the right color for the Manxman, but have a few updates that I'm hoping to share soon. I haven't got around to making the video yet sharing the updates but I'm still working on it! Best wishes, Mike
Of all the bikes you own, this has to be my favourite, looks wise. (Doesn’t sound bad either). Excellent new carb’, ran lovely from the moment it fired. Look forward to the clutch repair and hopefully a ride video. All the best👍🏼.
Hehe, thanks James. Yes, it's such a thrill to hear the bike. I've heard many others that are much quieter than this but I rather like that it has more of an angry bark 😎😀
Hehe, that's a fair comment, Luca. They are certainly different. I go back and forth regarding the bars and still have the original style bars if needed. Best wishes, Mike
Best thing you can do for your resto is fit a new carb.....if you have twin concentric carbs like me get the new floats from Burlins as you can now set the float level un like those old crappy nylon ones
I put a new carb on my 54 T110, didn't even muck about with the old one, awesome !! Cant find a Vokes element here in Australia, any ideas ? Beatiful bike, well done.
Hi John, great to hear about your carburetor. I'll try and go back over my notes, but I think that I fitted a K & N filter in the original airbox. I have the old filter element, but it was pretty scruffy looking and so I decided to go with a new filter element instead. I'll try and find which one I used. I think I just found one that would fit. Cheers, Mike
Excellent, well explained video, thanks for sharing. Recently got a ‘78 Meriden Tiger 750 and I’m darned if it can get the carb right. I put it down to being my first Triumph and not being familiar with the Amal! I’ve heard some guys use a Mikuni substitute - is that a road worth going down but I must say, that new Amal looked nice.
Hi Nigel, thanks very much for your comment. Yes, a lot of the guys have the Mikuni carburetors on their Nortons in the club and they are undoubtedly great. They definitely hold a better idle, but I must say I still love the original AMAL carburetors.
Hi Mike - just re-watched this… such a great feeling when a new component just plugs in and works! What’s your main reason for deleting the choke? Cheers, Nigel
Hi Nigel, thanks a lot. Yes, that new carb made a big difference. There's no particular reason for not fitting the choke. The bike didn't come with a choke when I got it. I did think about fitting one per the standard setup but thought I would see how it works without. It seems to work great. We also have pretty moderate temperatures here in Oregon, so I haven't added it and it's also one less thing to worry about 😉. I hope all is well and you have a great new year. Cheers, Mike
Nice job Mike! Interestingly, I grew up in the mid-70s i n Salisbury, UK and we had a small company called Burlen Services just around the corner from us. They specialised in carburettors and other tuning parts. I wonder if they are one and the same?
Thanks! I'm hoping that this will be a much more reliable carburetor than the original parts that I assemble together. Concentric.. concentric! blasphemy 😀😀😀
Top job Mike, what is the thinking behind removing the 'choke' after all these years when it assists on start up? Bike is looking & sounds a treat, reminds me of the start up following the rebuild however many years back (5 or 6) .. ? Have a great week. atvb t ..
Thanks Terry, can you believe that it was over 8 years ago!?! It didn't come with a choke when I got the bike although a choke would have been standard. I have grown accustomed to not needing it as it has always been a good starter. Best wishes, Mike
I'm not sure but their website states the following: The new carburettor incorporates changes in materials which reduces the rate of slide and body wear and a precision engineered idle circuit. This improves the pick-up performance from idle and reduces fuel consumption. The precision manufactured forged alloy, Hard Anodised Throttle Slide has a low friction surface for smoother operation and greater wear resistance. The ethanol resistant, puncture proof StayUp® Float and Viton tipped alloy Needle Valve improve control of the fuel flow. amalcarb.co.uk/?___store=amal
Hi Colin. The standard bike would've come with a choke, but mine never did. I've always felt like it didn't need it once it's flooded on the first start of the day on a cold morning. After that it starts just great. It's just a personal preference. I actually have chokes on most of my other bikes. Cheers, Mike
Hi Mike, great job, man but that’s a beautiful 🤩 bike 🏍 can I take it for a test ride next time I’m over, lol 😂, just standing beside it would be sweeeeeeeeet, do you think I’d need silk gloves on to caress it, 😇🤩, it sure is one beautiful bike. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧🏍
Hehe, you would be most welcome, Mike! I'm hoping to take it for a longer ride soon, hopefully one morning while it's still relatively cool. My friend Geoff said he would come over on his 64 Thunderbird, so that would be a real treat. Best wishes, Mike
Hehe, it was from Lucky Brand when they had an affiliation with Triumph (and also Norton). You might be able to find one on eBay or Poshmark, etc. Here's an example: poshmark.com/listing/Lucky-Brand-Tan-Triumph-Tiger-T110-Super-Sport-XL-5c7614433e0caaf439d187ba
That is one of the nicest looking British bikes. Good that they're still making the Amal carb. I have one on my 1960 BSA 650, runs great.

It's great when they idle, I never seemed to have that luxury when I had bikes in my youth.
Best looking 50's Triumph for me, that one sounds really crisp! Very jealous - again!
Thanks a lot Jim. It's still my favorite!

Hehe. Thanks Frank. That was a really worthwhile project. Best wishes
Awesome bike Mike! Love its color & she sounds rather mean for an old girl. You sure have her tuned well now too 👍
Hehe, I do smirk when I see how angry it sounds at times compared to the pretty look 😎😁
I wish I had £1 for every time I took out an Amal slide.
Love that bike Mike! ✌️
