In this video I revisit a Northumberland location which I have photographed numerous times before but have never been entirely happy with the results. So, I return to see if I can improve my landscape photography.
I decide to take with me what could be considered the best budget camera for landscape photography currently available. Having used the camera for a year, I know that it can definitely produce the results.
But is it really the best camera available for landscape photography on a budget?

S5 is best cam I ever owned. I may upgrade to an S5-3 oneday but the 2nd gens arent doing enough to make me upgrade. The new autofocus is still not Sony or Canon quality so using a Camera you already know how to focus or work around no point changing. Lovely vid and lucky to have those locations. You photos are spectacular. Thanks for highlighting that aspect ratio.

Excellent channel. I had a feeling you'd choose the Panasonic S5. I'm currently looking at the S5 or the S5ii X. After seeing your video comparing the 14-28 f4-5.6 with the Pro 16-35 f4 I thought I'd look at your channel. After many years of not taking photography as seriously as I may have in decades past I'm looking at the Lumix and a few others. Specifically for a budget full frame for real estate work. Along with some landscape, street and portrait. The S5iiX video capabilities are better than the alpha 7iv.

Some wonderful photos here! Was surprised by the camera choice…not disagreeing but just surprised..didn’t expect a FF.

Thanks! I think the thing to remember with this video was that is was the best budget camera...it's hard to beat the price of the S5 mk 1 (until you start buying more lenses!). Thanks for the comment.

Three angle through the gate shot Jason, nice. The snowy rocks looked great too. They look like broken teeth!

Totally agree with your point about the lenses price (and size). Reason why I don't want to get into FF. It just makes frustration when you can't afford upgrading your system.
I am shooting M43 and I can afford every lens I could dream of (except the Olympus 150-400mm 7500$ dollar lens - although it is not even expensive compared to FF equivalents).
To me enjoying the walk and the shooting is as important as the end result and those lightweight cameras are just perfect for that.

Really enjoyed the video and appreciated your honesty. I have an S1 and a S5. I don’t do much photography nowadays due to health problems and while I wouldn’t part with my S1, the S5 with the 12-60mm is my go to camera for what photography I do do. I recently watched someone else on UA-cam raving about about the S5 mk2, but I couldn’t help thinking all the positive features he mentioned are already in the original S5. What you say about the lenses is true. Once you look past the kit lenses they do get really expensive.

Thanks for the comment! I think the MK1 is probably the most under-rated camera available at the moment... The MK2 is great but most of the benefits are video related.

The S1 is a similar price on the used market to the S5. Do you think it's worth it over the S5 when paired with the 24-105 and Sigma 100-400? I've heard the EVF is quite a bit better but it's also pretty bulky!

It's a really big camera! I always fancied the S1R (I miss having a high resolution body) but the size (which is the same as the S1) really put me off. Supposed to be a great camera though (S1 & S1R).
I think though that the S5 has better video features than the S1 (if video is your thing). That may have changed with firmware updates so please don't quote me!

Hi Jason , does the S1 have the same 65:24 aspect ratio as the S5 , just was looking at an S1 or an S5 because they are good prices used . Cheers Kevin

Hi Kevin. Yes it does (as does the S1R which I’ve always found really tempting simply because of the high megapixel count). Hope that help!

First of all, for Landscape I never use zoom lenses, only prime Lenses and I think that 24 Mp camera sensor is too low, so if we talk new Cameras, then the Sony A7RIIIA, alternative the Fuji X-T5.

    • @AbdonPhirathon
      @AbdonPhirathon 6 місяців тому +2

First of all, the 40MP files of the X-T5 can’t compete with the 24MP of the S5, period, even with prime lenses. I have used it extensively to know that what you claim isn’t the case. In fact, only using pixel shift will we see an advantage, but then the S5 also has pixel shift.
The only real contenders here are the 42MP and higher FULL FRAME sensors, not APS-C. Fuji files are mushy in comparison, even when not using lightroom. The details on the 24MP sensor of the S5 are crisper and full of nuance. Aldo, the 40MP sensor produces quite noisy files when compared to the S5.
That said, in an age where Pixel shift and Super resolution are available to print as large as you’d ever need, why are you so obsessed with megapixels?

@@AbdonPhirathon I am not obsessed with megapixels, I just love as clean images as possible, I use 61 megapixels Cameras for Landscape.

I think the 24mp argument all depends on end use… are you printing big? If not, then to be honest, 24mp is fine. But of course having more pixels is always nice. As for you camera suggestions… the A7RiiiA is a lovely camera (I’ve owned it in the past) but it’s £2249 new at the moment from Wex - and that’s body only. I have a long Fuji history (I was an official X photographer for a while)… in my opinion S5 files are cleaner but anyway, that would cost you £1849 for the 16-80 kit at the moment.
The main question in this video is if the S5 is a good BUDGET camera… and at £1200 for the kit I think it’s far more cost effective than both of those options.
As for the primes, I think that’s just a personal choice. I use zooms on my Panasonic and Lumix gear but pretty much only primes on my Sony A7C.
But we all have our own preferences and opinions so thanks for the comment.

@@JasonFriendPhotography The Sony A7RIII is a lot cheaper other places right NOW, I had the A7RII so I can highly recommend it. I do not like the EVF on the A7C, but I do like the design with the EVF in the corner, I wish all cameras had that.
