R.I.P. Kevin Conroy, who cares about him using his Batman voice to speak politics, he will ALWAYS be the voice for Batman and one of my favorite voice actors.

Everyone knows him for Donkey, but hell if I won't ever take Beverly Hills Cop over Shrek. One of the rare times I enjoy live action compared to animation. And Gilbert Gottfried was also so iconic, but for a different reason to Robin. His voice was IMMEDIATELY recognizable. They both had serious parts, but they'll always be beloved for filling our hearts with joy and laughter in their silliest roles.

Based on what you said, it's admittedly difficult to imagine anyone replicating the late, great Robin Williams' performance as Genie, especially when his humor and design were all tied to Robin himself. Even Dan Castellaneta, while he sometimes did a fair replication of Robin's voice, often sounded more like Homer Simpson. But with that said, I still say Genie has a solid identity on his own. Looking purely at his character, Genie is an eccentric dude that gets along with nearly everyone he meets, uses his 'PHENOMENAL, COSMIC POWERS' to liven up the mood wherever he is (i.e. meeting Aladdin, presenting Prince Ali to Agrabah's denizens), and acts as a caring mentor to Aladdin. Not to mention his backstory of feeling trapped to his lamp and wanting more freedom, which matches well with Aladdin and Jasmine's respective struggles. So overall I'd say his personality is still identifiable in and of itself, but the voice/performance will surely be a tough act to follow.

My take is if they're right for the role than it's alright it's not a voice actor in the part but if it could be done by anyone else better with better voice acting chops than it wouldn't hurt to cast a actor who has range in giving different kinds of vocals.
As much as I do love the Genie and Robin Williams’ performance you do bring up a very good point that is actually a problem with plenty of other animated movie characters as well not just him, It’s great to have perfect casting, but when you rely so heavily on having a character being so tailor made for one specific actor then it becomes problematic when other actors have to step in to fill their shoes in the event of the original actor’s absence or even death. People just aren’t going to accept the replacement as well. I know you said that there are no other animated characters who fit this criteria but I can actually think of quite a few, for instance Donkey from Shrek was ALWAYS tailor made with Eddie Murphy in mind and like Williams, the filmmakers pretty much let him define his character entirely through his ad-libs and one liners, because of this usually when another actor has to step in for the voice of Donkey in any Shrek supplementary material, (Games, shorts etc) they always have to try and sound exactly like Eddie Murphy because if not then it’s not the same character people have known to love. Two other prominent examples that can also apply to this as well as another point you brought up like ‘what if the actor says no to the character that was specifically written and designed with them in mind’ are Hades and Mufasa. When Disney was developing Hercules in its early stages, they initially designed and wrote the part of Hades with non other than Jack Nicholson in mind, however that backfired when Nicholson demanded way too much for his salary and extra earnings from the film’s merch and they ultimately had to let him go and not only recast him but also give the character a complete overhaul. Also, when it comes to Mufasa, as beloved and iconic the late great James Earl Jones in that role, Disney did rely on him a little too much as well such as when they brought him back to voice Mufasa again in the Lion King remake to subpar results due his age at the time resulting his voice to no longer fit the character as well. Overall, as much as I do love the character of the Genie and the performance, I do think you bring up a good point that in the long run it ultimately became both a blessing and a curse for animation. While yes we did get a great and iconic performance out of it and it did help influence more celebrity voice casting in animated features, (Hot take incoming, but I personally don’t mind celebrity voice casting as much as most other people as long as the actors suit their roles and at least give a shit about them where they put in as much effort in their performance as they would in any other film) but it did also cause a domino effect in the industry of having characters completely defined by their voice actor first and foremost and causing conflicts for future material with them if said actor is unavailable or passes away. All this resulting in audiences often only being able to see the actor first and the character second and not vice versa. O&C's, obscenely, overrated, unquestionably.
@@matthewdaley746 How is it overrated?? Barely anyone talks about this movie.
@Yellowguy0619 I really should have been more specific, it was obscenely overrated upon release, it, literally, came out the very same day as, TLBT, and, outgrossed it, domestically, (though, it was, outgrossed, overseas, and, overall), and, Disney was, so, outraged, they buried it for, nearly, a decade, not even releasing it on video, it actually was listed as, "no longer available," despite, being in limbo for many years, what a mess.
@@matthewdaley746 I still think it's a good movie. Despite the plot holes, there are some scenes in the movie that is written well.
@Yellowguy0619 It's, OK, but, I absolutely understand why Disney shoved it under the rug, for, a, while, especially, considering, TLM, would immediately follow it, I missed the first theatrical run, when it came out again, my, Mom, waited until the last minute to go to the theater, and, it was sold out, I was furious with her, and, I was even more upset that she wanted to see, The, Birdcage, instead, I refused, and, we went home, (nearly, three decades later, I still haven't seen it), the following day, I got on my bike, and, saw it, alone, and, I was understandably underwhelmed.

Disney thinks “if we made it it’s a great movie, and we are incapable of making bad movies.
And if the movie isn’t loved it’s something else’s fault!!”

I know what you're saying but Will Smith's Genie more took cues from Robin rather than be entirely Will doing his own thing.
Alas, it's, inferior, unquestionably.
@@matthewdaley746 true!
At least Robin posthumously got to play the Genie in live action once though.
@James-g1g7k Will Smith's career will absolutely end before the age of, sixty-five, because, like Nicolas Cage, he can only play himself, unlike him, his uncle didn't direct, The, Godfather, he stubbornly refuses to ever play villains, and, he slapped Chris Rock, OTOH, he's Sidney Poitier compared to his son, who is shameless enough to use his own name, that's truly miserable.
