Well-known exam prep author Dr. Howard Rosenthal shares one of his most popular programs of all time. In just 47 minutes this audio program covers the major eight CACREP areas found on virtually all comprehensive exams. Some reminders. Since this program was released, many exams refer to self-help groups as mutual aid groups and guidance groups are more commonly referred to as psychoeducational groups. The DOT can be found online at www.occupationalinfo.org The OOH can be accessed at www.bls.gov/ooh. The noted existential psychiatrist Irvin D. Yalom has changed his 11 curative factors for groups to 12 therapeutic factors 1. altruism 2. Cohesion 3. universality 4. Interpersonal learning input 5. Interpersonal learning output 6. Guidance 7. Catharsis 8. identification 9. Family re-enactment 10. Self-understanding 11. Instillation of hope and 12. existential factors.
As of May 2023, the NEW NBCC ethics stipulate waiting 5 years before having a romantic or sexual relationship with a former client/supervisee/consultee. Therefore, at this point in time ACA and NBCC agree on the figure of 5 years. The relationship may not be exploitative.
Dr. Rosenthal’s prep materials go into great detail about all the topics covered and literally includes hundreds of other topics.

Best of luck!! Honestly, I loved listening to his video of ways to take the test and how to answer questions rather than understanding the material, if that makes sense. I would say the apps did not help me much because the test was extremely different. The pass rate that I got for mine was an 84 so dont google about pass rate because it varies per test. I would suggest you do read and test yourself using his book because this is actually my second time taking the NCE and I did not read his book the first time. I would suggest studing helping relationships heavily! And when answering the questions, try to do process of elemination (e.g. if you know your theorist, you should be able to easily eleminate at least two options). Hope this helps!

Hi!! Best of luck as you go about your career. Its a difficult exam but that is because english is not my primary langauge. I don't know if there were any tricky questions. I think it was heavily focused on several theories and concepts. So perhaps try understanding the theorist and what their concepts were (e.g., Aaron Beck, cognitive, Ellis-REBT (etc). Really try to focus your studying on the helping relationships. Dr. Rosenthenal did not lie when he said this is the heaviest section of the exam. Also try to familiarize yourself with diagnosis if you havent already. I wish you best of luck!!!! Keep it up and dont be discouraged if you do not pass your first time. I did not and I took my scores with me and i focused on the heaviest sections to improve my scores rather than studying for the smaller sections.@@rmleider

@@milsterrr my exam definitely had a lot of questions pertaining to career and group theory as well as some developmental topics (for this it was mainly asking about Piaget and Erikson's stages/application of the stages). For career, study the big names such as Roe, Super, and Holland. I studied questions from the purple book to understand concepts, and used the pocket prep app to take practice quizzes on (questions from this app resembled the questions on the test). For topics I needed further guidance on, I skimmed thru Dr. Pam's channel on said topics since she goes into depth and gives helpful tricks and memory devices too! Lastly, I watched this review video both the night before and the morning of my exam. Read the questions carefully, and read every choice, a lot of questions on it comes down to choosing the best answer out of the ones provided. You got this! Good luck! :)

@@yamsufhere hey, I got a raw score 104 which is apparently really good based on previous tests. But from what I can recall: Much on matching theories to the individual(s) that developed it- mainly Gestalt and existentialism. Much on career theories and the different assessments available to provide to clients; Holland’s RIASEC Career assessment- you will match the person’s characteristics and interests to what type of career they’ll be suited for. Personality: factors that shape it and the Big 5. Erik Erikson: 1 to 3 questions on him- they’ll give a scenario/example and you state what stage of life they may be in. For assessment: study more to understand t-scores, p-values, standard deviation and how to calculate t-scores if this is a weak area, there will be a question that makes you calculate it. Those are the most important pieces, the multicultural, ethical, and other domains were more simple.

I PASSED!!!! IM BEYOND ELATED. I passed the 1st time. My 2 biggest resources I used were the purple book (for context) and the Behavioral Pocket Prep App (for taking practice tests).
Be familiar with Career & Group counseling! That was a big portion of my exam (and I heard the same from others too).
Good luck to everyone preparing. I started studying 1 month before the exam.
THANK YOU DR. ROSENTHAL! Im forever greatful!

Some things are outdated--or updated, as in the latest (2014) ACA Code of Ethics prohibits "Sexual and/or romantic counselor-client interactions or relationships with current clients, their romantic partners, or their family members..." and 2 years is unethical. As an update: NBCC's new CODE OF ETHICS released May, 2023 now says romantic/sexual relationships with clients, consultees, and supervisees cannot take place until at least five years from the final contact. This goes for face-to-face as well as electronic interactions.

My materials ca be used as a supplement, but never as your only study guide for the Mental Health Counselor's Exam. That exam is brand new and I recommend you join Dr. Linton Hutchinson's program. Since it is brand new (hot off the presses) do not use used programs for the Mental Health Exam. My materials are targeted at folks who are taking the NCE, the CPCE, the CECE, oral and written boards, or comprehensive counseling exams.

@@gabbyking8546 Hi. For someone like me, wording is everything. The practice test I had was outdated in comparison to the actual exam. A few things from this tape was on the exam, however, other things weren't. I was expecting to see similar question structures about the material, and it was NOTHING like what I studied. UA-cam CPCE study guide was VERY SIMILAR in questioning concerning the CPCE I took. I should have studied that, but I didn't. A few questions on the cpce UA-cam audio was Actually on the test.
Also, world changers is VERY similar to how they asked questions and the material is very closely related to the actual exam. I WISH I studied that material...
Being said, I will more than likely have a different exam when I test again in May.
I have updated material, so now I feel as thou I will be ready. Updated material for others may not be an issues, but for me, it was.
      Hope this helps.

@@chriscustodio7186 After the exam, I was given my score. My university post the number of questions you will need to get correct in order to pass the exam. Being said, that's how I know I was off by two points from passing the exam to which I would be planning my private practice right now and ordering furniture for my office to which a grand opening would take place and inviting my colleague and my clinical supervisor. Graduation is right around the corner and this is my LAST chance to pass this exam or I will have to graduate in Dec. Of this year.
