About the only time I ever followed a steam Excursion was when CNW 1385 was just released and we picked it up from the north side of Milwaukee to Green Bay. Luckily a lot of it was along the freeway but there were some slushy shoulders to look out for when pulling over for a setup
In '96 we had M&N 14 from the museum up in Duluth and I was chasing it back from Ladysmith to Prentice Wi. I was slated to crew the concession car from Prentice back to Rhinelander. I got into a line of railfans and speeds went way north of 100 mph. We came around a curve on Hwy. 8 and went past a State cop. He just looked up from his dash and shook his head, he didn't even pull out. Most railfans will risk death to get a pacing shot of steam and they don't care who they take with them.
When i was chasing 2816 in Missouri the dumbest of idiots thought that because 2816 was out that they were above the law. Ridiculous and it doesn't even help when you have to deal with pacers but on another note its gonna be the same thing when i chase 4014 on the Heartland of America Tour so prepare for craziness
That almost looks like US61, ive been on that road a few times when i was a crew driver for UPRR. 95% of that driving was at night, no steam trains or nutso traffic, but plenty of night life out in the boonies, mostly big animals😵😨😱❗
@@jasonasselin when you have kazillions of goofball drivers chasing a steam locomotive, you just know theyre diehard railfans! And....... i was one of those goofballs waaaay back in 1975, when the American Freedom Train made its trek from Peoria IlIinois to Springfield, i even got some side-by-side pacing of Reading #2101, that was a real treat❗, but darn it, theyre all on old, ancient, super 8 sound movies 🤔☹😤❗
I'm from Iowa (living my retirement in SW Missouri) so I know that there are idiot drivers in Iowa, too. Michigan and Wisconsin do not have a monopoly on stupidity!
While I do agree that we've got our fair share of crappy drivers here in Iowa, I can safely tell you that most if not all of the drivers pulling maneuvers like this on this chase were from Illinois and Wisconsin.
Just FYI……traffic ACCIDENTS are very rare. Stupid incidents are quite common. We the people need to put pressure on all powers that be and media to start calling them correctly. Think about it before speaking!
It was a passing zone, the dashed yellow lines means you can pass. You never wanted to pass a bunch of people going 20 under speed limit when you didn’t care what they were looking at? Please.

These were drop offs in some spots, I seen many cars that were going to need help.. lol
I'm glad you got to see The Empress CPKC 2816 The Final Spike Tour Train.
That is absolutely nuts!
Tried steam chasing once, never again. Too many "Getouttamyway" lunatics. Pics are important but I'm kinda fond of living.....
Oh, and a pox on them ugly diesels!!
Never been on a train chase. WOW.
Jason I bet you would love that amazing steam train puffing along the E&LS tracks outside your place....LOL - if the track could take it that is??

It was mental through here.. They settled down when the train started getting delayed.

Yah ! How about them F-Units !!
Those dumbs dumbs are ruining it for fellow rail fans. Was this a special charter excursion?
CPKC Final Spike Steam Tour

Precisely why I stay away from Sausagefests like that.
I believe I saw you on Jaw Tooth
You did and will a bunch times more I bet!
Old IOWA highways are too risky. 2 Lane Tilley roads are way too pokey.
So I am confused -- at this point does it burn coal or oil to heat water?
Was wondering the same. The exhaust out the stack looks too clean for coal. The tender looks like an oil tank
This one was converted to oil burning in 1999.
I guess not everybody is a railroad buff
The dumbing down of America is complete.

You are precisely correct. I call them wrecks.
How did you edit out the f word you used in the short?
Science! lol Editing...

Frikkin foamers
They are in a passing zone.
Does that mean you can run cars off the road?
@@jasonasselinwhat cars where run off the road, that one pick up truck was parked looking at the train.
