  • Users of the Hornady Comparators often forego getting the extra item Hornady Anvil...But the Anvil is very useful for consistent and accurate Comparator readings on our critical headspace...

I was quick to purchase the anvil after picking up the Comparator. It was certainly a welcome addition.

A lot of great info as usual. It may be over the head of many, but to reloaders it should really open their eyes to what is going on When things go Wrong.
It is very disappointing to eject a case head and have a broken case stuck in the chamber.
I am very glad that I got the anvil when I bought the case comparator. Much more better.

thanks that was a good explanation of why we use the comparators !
ps: I bought the anvil at the same time I bought the comparator :)

Thanks for this explanation of headspace. I am new to reloading pistol but will like to reload rifle in the future but I don't know that much yet to try it.....

Great vid Cookie. Consistency is absolutely important for any measuring device and the anvil can help with that. I like your take on head space issues with non-rimmed rifle cartridges. I have always been a proponent of the lee neck sizer for the most part; however, I don't own a semi-auto rifle yet so I'm not as worried about feed issues as that crowd. I will keep this in mind when I finally catch the AR or M14 bug.
    Thank you
    Nathan

It's very odd that you made this video. My hornady comparator and anvil showed up my door step today! The only bad part is, even with all the brass I have, I now have to go get either new brass, or factory ammo. Just to verify my chamber specs so I can make sure that the case gauges I've been using were close enough!
But, precision techniques make precision ammo!
    Thanks sir!

kyle lusk just measure the fired brass you have now and set up your sizing die to bump the shoulders.

Love your videos. Great detail and examples of do's and don'ts. I've learned vast amounts of knowledge from you, so thanks so much but........ The tool "compares" one thing to something else. Comparisons not Compersons. Your pronunciation makes me chuckle! "Compare" "ahtor" not "comper ator"!

A nice explanation of the mysterious headspace - I never knew these devices existed. Looks like it is going to be an early Merry Christmas in Crabbyland.

Crabby Old Warrior - Really don't need to tell ya much of anything, pardnah - You've been there and seen it... but most of the shooters of today only think of headspace as being something that is checked with Go and No Go gauges - if a rifle passes that, it's safe to shoot....But in reality, there is much more to that...a gun can be in dangerous headspace condition even if the gun is properly headspaced, if the ammo has excessive headspace (translation - too short for the chamber) - and those cylinder case gauges don't tell the whole story... Best to ya, FC

I see that you watch my video when I brought up case gauges, those to me are Guessing... Not Knowing. The set up with the Hornady tools give you the numbers. The only thing I could say about the anvil is brass that has been fired in a semi auto may have burs kicked up on the rim of the extractor grove resulting in uneven measurements. some rifles do that and some rifles don't. on bolt action rifles it's not an issue. I have explained this subject to people til I was blue in the face. some people don't get it and have this blind faith that anything mechanical can be done by monkeys, what you have said is of utmost importance and should not under any circumstances be taken lightly. Dave.

I didn't know such a device existed. I will definitely have to order one. I use the same calibers and hate the balancing act and misreadings due to the slight angles of how i'm trying to hold what i'm measuring.

Just what I needed to know concerning the anvil portion. I normally neck size with a bushing for my bench rifle. However I full length size occasionally due to variations in neck thickness. With full length sizing your setting the inside diameter of the case neck, but with neck sizing your setting the outside diameter.

I use a L.E. Wilson hand die with a bushing, so no neck ex pander.

I just got my anvil and thought the same thing," no instructions". My question is it comes with a big knob set screw and an Allen wrench and set screw. I'm only using the big knob set screw but wonder what the Allen set screw is for. Thanks for another informative video.

Hi FC45, your videos are great. I'm new to considering headspace when reloading. I'm curious to role a the extractor has in the equation. Wouldn't the extractor mitigate any excessive headspace like the .014 you mention? I just don't know how much play the extractor gives the case to "float around" in the chamber. Thanks

The anvil is the best combo for the comparator, if you want the most accurate reading you need that anvil, I notice when I'm not using it the reading it can vary due to the engraved name brand on the base of the case, it may sound weird but that happened to me

The Caliper itself is subject to some human error and the way you place the brass to be measured. Can this tool kit be used ti measure just the brass length?

Ive noticed that every full length die I have bumps the shoulder back 2 to 3 thousands at the full length (when I set the die right to where it touches the shell holder). Im wondering how guys are getting such huge shoulder bump back numbers from full length sizing. Maybe my rifle chambers are all tight and Im not getting a lot of blow out?
What kind of headspace are you getting on your 308 fire formed brass when setting your FL die to just touch your shell holder?
Im going to check again but if I remember right, Im just getting 2 to 3 thousands only which is perfect for my fire formed brass. But I guess the main variable is that every rifle chamber is different and some will be cut loose and some more precision cut

fc45lc - Thanks for the review. I have the Hornady Headspace Comparator and I also have the RCBC Precision Mic for 308. Have you ever compared them to each other? Since the RCBS Mics are not in all calibers, the Hornady Comparator, fills in the gap.
I have looked at the Hornady Anvil (AB1) a number of times, but find it to be a OVERPRICED item for what it is. I may start looking for a used one, to get the price more inline with reality (my opinion).
Thanks again for your informative videos, Thanks for the time you donate to make and edit them. :-)

I recently ordered the set and anvil and should be arriving soon. Couldn’t you drill out a pocket in the anvil for a high primer like your mic gauge? I’ll know better when I see it. I have a mill and could open up the center just larger than a larger primer. Just wondering if it’s feasible. Thanks for your videos

    • @barrygrant2907

The better solution is to fix the high primer.

Do I really need that if I have RCBS precision mic?
Cuz measurement with caliper plus that gauge is longer than just using RCBS precision mic

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 років тому

Rtwo Comm - No, you absolutely do not need any of that comparator system if you have the Precision Mic...I have always favored the Precision Mic, but got the Hornady to compare and make videos. The Hornady also works and the anvil makes it better. Good reloadin' to ya, FC
