I think we need to re-evaluate the entire point of education. The how and what of education are their own questions that I see a lot of thinking about. The why, much less so. Within ten years, virtually every 'job' we currently get paid for will be supplanted by AI and robotics. It does not appear to be the case that we will just develop other jobs as we have in the past as machines supplanted human labor, as there will be NO task that the AIs and robots will not be able to do better. Work is likely to become completely optional, with most human beings living off of a Universal Basic Income. The critical skill then will be how to find meaning and fulfillment in a post scarcity world. I do believe the most critical skills will be those children learn in play, how to engage in social interaction and simply find joy.

That is quite deep and thought provoking (like your UA-cam channel). I agree that the long term ramifications are quite daunting and interesting at the same time. I am actually working to get a Graduate Professor on Economics to appear in one of my videos so that I can interview him or her about the possibilities of Universal Basic Income and how that would work in the short run and the long run. How would an economy even work if no one had to work. So many of us find meaning for our lives through work so it is hard to imagine a world where one would work, or wouldn't have to work. I do believe that education would still exist and would still be very important, but the motivations behind it would be quite different. I think children's play time has always been extremely critical in their development. Being able to extend that play into adulthood would be an interesting concept. So many possibilities. Thank you for making us think about these important aspects.

I've been thinking about personalization in education with AI. An AI teacher who is available 24/7 and always in the optimal mood and energy level. Another thing is the curation of teaching style, speed and methodology which can be customised for an individual student. Thirdly we have the issue of mental health where society is changing rapidly and students need a safe and nurturing space rather than the survival of the fittest fake jungle structure we have had so far. And finally we will also be able to move away from the false ideas of meritocracy and bottleneck progression.
All this is only possible if we as humans are willing to grow with our technology.

Yes, I've been right there with you as well. What seemed like total science fiction just a few years ago is now a total reality. We have to be careful though and do testing and really think about the second and third order effects. An important part of AI Literacy is Critical Thinking. Within that we have to watch out for overreliance. What skills will we lose or not gain because we now have advanced AI that can do so much for us. We need to be aware and purposeful in our decision. Having said all that, I do think that AI can help education in so many ways and make the learning process so much better.

We are in an amazing time and done right, students could be in a fantastic position, yet my biggest fear is that the old fashion book may fall short, and not be used as much as it should anymore. If there is some balance that could be reached to make sure that books never go away, this old foundation could always be of help (maybe?). As a retired teacher, I'm glad that I am retired. : /
For reference, I was the first teacher in my district (10,000 students) to create his own teacher website where students and parents had access to my syllabus, home school tips and links to relevant information. This was in 2001, so technology in education has always been a passion of mine.
While teachers won't be going extinct anytime soon, the demand for qualified teachers will diminish with time going forward. Early on it will likely be the students with parents who possess higher education achievements and better financial stability who will opt for AI-based education for their children. Over over time this divide will diminish. Schools will eventually transform into places that focus on developing social skills such as collaboration, teamwork and experiential learning, as well as serving as a safe place for children to be while their parents are at work. For strictly knowledge/information acquisition, it will be hard to beat a personalized AI agent who "knows" the student better than anyone, knows how the student learns optimally and who grows and stays with the student throughout their "formal" education years.

One of my first jobs working at my university when I was getting my bachelor's degree was making webpages so that professors could put up their syllabi and other content. This was at the end of the 1998/1999. So much has changed and evolved. I found your predictions very interesting and possible. Another idea would be that AI is used to help a majority of schools and only the rich can afford real teachers. I think we will always have human teachers and in the future we will have robots in the classroom that can also help with teaching and experiential learning. So many possibilities. You get more information reading books than through lectures at school. I passed my high school and bachelor's degree as a private student and loved every minute of it as there was no tension about grades. There was just one final exam for which I studied at my own pace and passed with First division.
The fact that I completed my high school and graduation without any tutoring shows there is no need of teachers or schools.
And with the advancements in AI teachers will surely become extinct as most don't teach but only waste time of students. We can learn better at our own pace using books and AI.

@@syeddanishanwer I applaud your self-sufficiency and determination to succeed. It sounds like you were very successful in your self-driven education. The COVID pandemic provided a wealth of data around your main point. Many students, their parents and even teachers struggled immensely when the pandemic suddenly forced public education into a home school model. For sure part of that struggle was the lack of preparedness society (American) had going into the pandemic. Education (the institution) is still examining the data and looking at the implications going forward. In the short term we need to find ways to address the learning deficits that arose in many students impacted by the pandemic and the resulting period spent in home school. Students who were thriving in the traditional public school environment, academically crashed during the pandemic. Test scores clearly point to large gaps in knowledge accrued during lock down and homeschooling. Many of these students today, even after several years back in the traditional classroom still struggle and still possess these gaps in knowledge. As a society, it is my hope that we shoulder the responsibility to provide whatever resources are required to catch these students up before their formal education window closes. The data also revealed that many students depend on the emotional and academic support that real teachers provide. from my experience working with thousands of students is that, sadly, may do not have home environments that are conducive to learning and who have parents committed and capable of supporting their children through their education.
It sounds like you had this support. You are very fortunate!

I can see schools being optional at some point, and a lot more freedom is available for students/individuals to pursue their own dreams or goals at a much younger age. When you have GPT-6 or a teacher that can teach anything without hallucinating, and can guide you to what you want to learn...that's the key, people have more freedom to choose what to learn now, so it will render General Education obsolete. I hated the school system here in America having to take so many classes I wasn't interested in, and even at college I had to do Math, English, and a bunch of things not related to my passion (Music, and Languages) .

I personally imagine that each major academic university would spend the time to craft their own AI that would be very much like a mascot.
It would also know the students and their transcript, which classes they're in, so that it could make sure it's not being used to cheat. It would be the safest for the university, because it could be programmed like their own personal tutor for all the students. So it'd basically be like Aristotle, or however they program it to be, because you will end up programming a certain personality. Because it can't be everything, there's always an opportunity cost. So it will lean towards a certain essence of the university, and it can help, but not too much.
It might even hold your assignments, answer common FAQs about the university. But most importantly, it would be the go-to AI that students couldn't get in trouble for using, because it's already programmed to be ideal for that.

That is an awesome idea lionshearthealth5235. The ease of implementation and reduction in costs for opensource AIs means that your idea could very well be feasible. It would require a lot of back end work to connect to student databases and such, but I am intrigued at the idea that instructors could load it with information about their course(s) and then tell the AI how much help they would be allowed to give the students. That is very interesting. I mean a student could still use any other AI, but I like how yo wrote that it would be "go-to AI that students couldn't get in trouble for using." I wonder if you could bottle up that idea and pitch it to make a million dollars. Good luck.

      @@sovorel-EDU Thanks for the encouragement!
I do see it as an idea, but more like a vision of an inevitability. I think this is the direction the industry is headed and a natural conclusion, just like when websites were new, everyone realized they needed to adopt one. So as AI becomes more like custom GPTs, I think different businesses will have to pick their avatar.
I think we already do it when they have a spokesperson, and maybe they will have the likeness sold of a spokesperson, but with colleges, I think their spokesperson would probably be an historic figure associated with the college, if not a council of them. And then the job creation would be that some colleges would build their AIs and update them in-house, and others would use consulting and strategy companies or tech companies as a few leaders will cause the rest to need to keep pace with a very logical infrastructure.
I'm sure it would be easy for people to find things to pick at, but the basic structure is all there, and one can work out the details and use waivers and humble foreknowledge for the inevitable errors on the way to what we have seen in science fiction become a reality, hopefully in a very good way, in our educational universities.

Enforcing this would be extremely difficult. Even if you block other AI access on the campus nothing stops the usage of a VPN and Tor to mitigate this. I.e. you’ll have to assume the student body will be able to access any AI no matter how you try to remove them. The only work around is to enforce accountability, proper learning ethics, and most importantly AI monitored sandboxed environments to log usage of approved routes and utilization of the correct tools for work.
But again, there’s no real good way to enforce any of this that effectively balances personal privacy and environments that are verifiably being used as universities intend (because enforcement will certainly be expensive). I just graduated from being a student and my comp sci profs were like “yeah we don’t really know” lol
And would students seriously use a device they know is being constantly monitored? What about privacy, knowing everything i’m doing is being stored somewhere or better yet by Microsoft? If the answer is “use a different computer for that stuff” that’s opens a loophole back to accessing whatever AI I want again.

@@youkers5841 you brought up some definite concerns and several problems that I think the beauty is that strategically solving them will create many jobs.
So obviously we're in pure speculation, but I would submit that you should make this custom AI for the university something of prestige and it should have access to university knowledge that other AIs might not have paid or be allowed access to. You could also have robust privacy because you are always surrendering some right of privacy when you join a university, but I think it would be very logical to be able to block history or use it as little as or as much as you would like.
I could see someone being sensitive that it knows which student you are and what your transcript is, but unless you convince me otherwise, I think that's an emotional response because the university already has who you are and what your ID is in their computer. It just feels scary if the computer can talk and tell you that it has your data once you log in and you have the option to chat with it.
So all the problems won’t be worked out in version one but I have a feeling by version 777 that we will have some fruit and I know I would love to speak with a custom AI avatar of the most prestigious university in the world who has designed something beautiful with exclusive knowledge meant to foster my development in each dialectic

Let’s set aside the faith based divine injunction that work itself is a curse bestowed upon mankind for the original sin, “by the sweat of your brow shall you till the land” (according to one translation), who wants to work so hard anymore. Or why want to work if all work can be taken care of. The contrivance of meaning and fulfillment derived from work is mostly philosophical to make the need to work agreeable.
We will devise other ways for existence after work becomes history, even if it’s to derive pleasure and fulfillment from watching paint dry!

I found it interesting that when I asked Chat GPT-4o today if it would be useful as a tutor for math and it said definitely not because it can sometimes be wrong. Interesting given that’s one of their demos. Don’t believe the hype. It’s not useful for a teacher or tutor. Nor is it good for giving you the right answer to math problems. It couldn’t do simple math my six year old can do. I’m not saying it won’t get there and it can certainly do better than earlier versions. But is this version useful in academia? Absolutely not. Maybe as an emotional support tool but nothing more. Even the translation is lacks the nuance of truly learning a language. It’s good for transactional conversation but nothing that relies on context or intonation to convey meaning. It can’t determine the difference between you saying something sarcastically or genuinely. It can imitate a sarcastic tone if you ask it to but that doesn’t mean it understands the way it changes meaning and can translate it properly. Not to mention dialect phrases which when translated literally make no sense at all.
This is a tool, a good one, but one that is over hyped (by necessity to make a profit) and that overhyping causes people to assume it can do more than it can and to rely on it in places where they shouldn’t.
It can make people who already know how to do something so it more efficiently (on average) but it can’t do something you can’t do yourself as you won’t know when it’s done it terribly wrong.

It can explain a process hundreds of ways, literally, and never lose its temper. It won't punish students, berate them, or assault them. It doesn't need union-mandated breaks or salary. It can teach at every level. It can coordinate across subject progress to optimize outcomes. It isn't constrained by state BoE requirements. It can teach more subjects than any school ever could.

No one’s saying it, but the bar for replacing college education with something better has been pretty low for the past two decades. Universities are a waste of time, money, and resources for the vast majority of college majors. Most students would get a better education reading one novel a week. So even if GPT-4o never happened, many colleges would and should be closing down. GPT-4o may be the final nail in the coffin for lackluster institutions.

I personally learned a lot by attending the university. I did read a lot, but I still needed help in fully understanding the material. That is where a good professor will help you not just obtain data, but truly learn the information through discussion, assignments (with feedback) and then assessments. Some majors do need to change in that AI is quickly overcoming their need. Yet, some majors are there just for to people to be able to learn, not necessarily to lead to a job. Education is more than just job preparation, although that is an important point. I think GPT-4o can do a lot to help education improve in many ways. Thank you for sharing and bringing this up.
