  • This is race 5 from Sydney's Harold Park Paceway.Here we see Colin Pike in the sulky behind Paleface Adios,as they take on some great pacers in the 1980 Inter-Dominion grand final.Paleface Adios was unlucky not to have won this race,as he was following Koala King into the race.Paleface Adios copped a check from Pure Steel on the turn into the straight,and this cost him a chance at winning this great race.Paleface Adios was a champion of harness racing and will never be forgotten.The race-caller is the late Brian Howard.

    One thing to remember about Paleface in this race from memory he was probably about ten years old. Still mixing with the best at that age. I saw him race at the old Albion Park circuit - he was given an ovation when he came out.

    What a race. Didn't Locarno explode when asked for an effort and then Koala King took off. Pure Steel amazing run and maybe not Pike's finest drive on Paleface.

    R.I.P. Colin Pike, a true legend of the sport, and Paleface Adios an absolute champion.

      Bud, Paleface was Queensland's, "signature pacer!" along with lucky mission, wondai's mate and amphion! (who once won, "length of straight!" at the Park!) My fave was, "🐨👑" who, "just happened to have won!" Would have been on him for sure!! just great memories 💭 cheers 🍻

      @@beauvearing8450 Qld produce a lot, but the Temora Tornado was from Temora NSW, as was Colin Pike. Paleface Adios was as much a Qld'er as Greg Inglis was. All the best.

      @@Equalizer5 Well, I guess it just goes to show u, u don't, "know till u know" bit like Alan border as well (from NSW) Greg Chappell (SA) sterlo (born in toowoomba) Dodgy Queenslanders, always latching on to a winner if not producing themselves! (I'm from Qld) I was more for the likes of lucky mission, wondai's mate and amphion! (amph won once by, "length of straight!") but overall, the better pacers came from VIC/WA/NSW! (popular alm, (best I've seen) San simeon, pure steel, gundary flier etc) ps: Was gammelite from South oz? cheers 🍻

      @@beauvearing8450 Popular Alm an absolute freak of a horse with Vin Knight. Gammalite a Victorian with Bruce Clarke, and Brian Gath drove him on some occasions. San Simeon a real champ, Maori's Idol what a horse, don't forget Koala King, Double Agent, Bundanoon, another horse that was pretty good was Local Honoured. Wondai's Mate was really good. Hondo Grattan was also good, Smooth Satin, Frosty Imp.

Add these, under a cloud, Tarport John, pure steel, kotari Knight, Jan's chance, Bill student, friendly footman, Michael frost, romantic Chris, tidy Jason, locarno (NZ) Stanley rio, (good horse Stanley NZ) Frosty imp was a great finisher as well as koala King! The list just goes on and on! Frig, I wish I could go back to 1981 for 12mths when I was backing, "the King 👑!!" (🐨) as, "a matter of course!" cheers 🍻

    Magictoliver, one of the great races was one week (or 2 weeks) after this Interdominion final, where Pure Steel, Paleface Adios and Locano all met again. From recollection Steelo sat in the death, Paleface sat one-one and Locano on Paleface's back, but Pure steel just fought off Paleface in a length of the straight battle, and Locano could't reach them in 3rd. Would be a great race to post if you could find it. Cheers

    Just looking at this again, I noticed Paleface seemed break for a little bit on the bend, then got back into his gear.

    I'm not too sure Paleface would've won this without the check. Nothing could run down Koala King that night.

      Your right, Koala King was hard to beat on the night, paleface Adios would have ran on well to at least run a good second..have a look at the Colin Pike (Paleface Adios) just past the winning post, as he turns to Ted Demmler (Pure Steel) and lets him know how he feels about that check.Harold Park at its best, what a night!!.

      Don't get me wrong, "the King 👑" (🐨) was a mighty pacer, but, unfortunately, not in the, "same vein!" with the likes of, "my BIG 3!" Poppy, steelo, and, "the gamma" those bloody racers were the reason I went to "the park" (albion) "every single sat nite!" for the best part of 7 years!! Pure Steel what an effort!!! Most horses would have finished tailed out and distressed with an idiotic drive like Dopey Demmler performed. I mean come on.. 3 deep for much of that race on a small 780m track over 3.5 circuits and still he runs........ THIRD!!!. An amazing heart horse he was. None better. Loved Steelo to death.

    • @marknorris1381
      @marknorris1381 5 років тому

      Sort of reminds me of Hancock on Courage Under Fire in the Brisbane Inter Final 2001. The little horse still managed to run fourth despite being posted three wide for a lot of a fast run race.

    • @Vinchiamo
      @Vinchiamo 5 років тому +1

      It wasn't Demmlers fault, as had Steelo got to the Death he would have won. The idiotic drive was Hoy on Lone boy who had a perfect trail at leader's back but came off the fence to sit in the death and then proceeded to post Steelo 3 wide. Lone boy was 50/1, but he drove it like he was on a 6/4 favorite where his only danger was Pure Steel. Crazy drive as Hoy destroyed both his own horse's chance and Pure Steel chance, which was a tragedy.

      Couldn’t agree more Greg. I watched races at Harold Park from 1961 until it closed and I saw Mount Eden win the Miracle Mile but I believe the run of Pure Steel in this race is the best I have ever seen. To come from the back mark, sprint to try to get into the death and fail, go back, then travel 3 wide for the remainder, be checked on the turn and lose all chance AND RUN 3RD!!! I still can’t believe he did it.

    Disgraceful drive by hoy (lone boy).must have been driving to get pure steel beaten !

    • @Vinchiamo
      @Vinchiamo 2 місяці тому

      Hoy the driver on Lone boy first attacked Lehigh Lad, then wrecked Frosty Imp's chances in trying to hold the lead. And then after all that early work he comes off a perfect trail on Frosty Imp's back and instead of taking the one - one on Pure Steel's back which would have also been a great place to be, he posts Steelo 3 wide. Worst case of rush of blood (extended version) I have ever seen. I backed Steelo and Paleface and both were tragedies in this race. I'm still upset so many years later with what should have and could have been.
