Thank you for this video! I've been playing guitar for a while now, and i've been contemplating getting a ukulele to get that signature sound in some songs. This was very helpful :)
Glad I could help!
Excellent! Thanks, Barry. "There are no rules....you can play what you like."
This is super clear. I appreciate seeing and hearing the differences between the different sizes.
Thank you - glad it helps
I am just starting to play ukulele. I have a Soprano Ukulele and I did not know very much about the different sizes and tones.
I had never heard of a Sopranino before, but it sounds really nice.
Thanks very much for explaining it so clearly. I enjoy your videos.
Thanks David!
You have made a very interesting video here. To me, it's clear as new polished glass: Some songs require a soprano. Some other songs the concert is essential. And some songs you just must play on a tenor. So I have three sizes 🙂
The longer the scale the more tension required to tune a string to pitch. Thats why metal guitar players who tune down want longer scale guitars. It keeps the strings from getting floppy when tuned down.
The concert and tenor ukes are obviously and significantly louder. I can tell by the camera mic clipping more with the larger ukes.
The area between the sound hole/bridge to the end pin is the main source of amplification for acoustic guitar/uke type instruments. You could actually close the sound hole and affect the sound less than placing your arm across the top keeping the top from resonating.
Great video. I leaned exactly what I was searching for.
Thank you, I am currently cutting some neck material and needed those starting numbers. Now adding for the headstock
and from bridge to tail gives me what I need.
Ultimately the overall size of a uke doesn't matter - distance saddle to nut is what determines the scale
Great video - very well presented too!
Thanks!
I cannot say I am a beginner. So far I am just decided to begin. I really can´t wait to have my own ukulele. Unfortunately all the shops are closed here in Switzerland as almost anywhere else. So far I could overcome the temptation to just order a ukulele at one of the big online brokers. In the meantime I browse the net looking for any tips about ukes, learn much about scale lengths, nut widths and tone woods. I really appreciate Your videos and I very much like the way You describe the instruments.
But although having seen lots of Your videos and read many comments I could not find an answer to a simple question. Maybe its naive and I sure dont want to be disrespectful. So here it is:
The tenor is not deeper as the soprano. I got that. Soprano, concert and tenor are all tuned the same. But there is a difference: The tenor sounds richer, fuller and more resonant.
Now, wouldn´t You use similar words for a better built, higher quality soprano versus a model of minor quality?
In other words: Are You able to easily distinguish a soprano from a concert or tenor ukulele only by listening to a song?
And a second question, a bit more private:
In the background of Your videos often are other ukuleles and bags to be seen. You do a lot of reviews so they go in and out constantly. Now when You walk through Your flat, how many ukes will You find in average? May I dare to estimate? Twenty three?
Yes, i'd say I can tell the difference in a lot of cases, but not all. There are complications. I have played some sopranos with more resonance and sustain than some tenors I have played!
As for ukes I own - big misconception that I own lots. Virtually all I review gets sent back - they are not mine. Personally 'own' about eight I keep. Some of the ones behind me are waiting to get gifted to local school (which is where the cheap ones go) or sent back to the shop.
I really love your videos man. Just coming around to show some love.
Thanks Jessi - much appreciated!
Love you videos! Just out of curiosity, how many ukes do you have?!
Not as many as you may think - 95% of the ukuleles I review on the site are loaned to me by the brands- they all get sent back. Personally I own about 10.
Thanks for such a speedy reply! I just bought my first, a KALA KA-S based on your review between that, the Ohana and Lanakai equivalents.. thrilled! Thnak you for your videos! :-)
What were those 3 beautiful songs you were playing with each one of those ukuleles? They sound amazing to play and I want to learn them
It's just a bit of noodling really. The first strummed thing is the intro to a song called 'wish I could shimmy like my sister kate'. The second is nothing - just Em to B. The fingerpicked part is the chord progression to Creep by Radiohead, but transposed in to C allowing that run up and down the A string.
Thank you so much!! :) time to practice
thanks for clearing one myth I kept hearing ,,,,,,,,get a tenor!........next one will be a soprano.......gracias
I'm playing a soprano and finding it difficult to get 3 fingers on a single fret. I wonder if the fingers should inline or in a D (guitar) shape. I have average size fingers.
I tend to barre them with the pad of my finger myself. Others I know stagger them
I play the tenor, but really only because it is the easiest for me to play. I can play the others just fine, but the tenor fits my hands better, if that makes any sense.
That isn't a function of it being a tenor through - it's because that tenor you have has a nut width that fits you better.
great video
Thanks!
Do pineapple ukuleles only come in soprano size? Because I have only see the soprano size
No, you tend to find concerts too

Thank you I had not see that review yet and thank you for answering my question.
Man shows different sizes of ukulele on a video camera, gets 4 down votes for his trouble....
Such a shame. Very informative video... pricks everywhere. Thank you, sir, for your trouble.
Goes with the territory I guess - sometimes I put review videos up and they get down votes in less time than it takes to view them! Keyboard warriors with no friends giggling to themselves in grubby bedrooms before their mother calls them down for dinner...
I feel your pain. I often upload essentially entirely free tabs for no other reason than to just help offer more work material for other users; and sometimes I'll get a down-vote right off the bat. "What more do you want from me!?" :D
I shot a like/subscribe your way too help offset the downvote
The madness that is UA-cam - thanks Steven!
some people do not like anything
thanks for the videos
This is the new...chest tv...The headless musico👍 all the same
