I'm convinced Maguire might well have gone on to win the World Championship in 2005 had he closed out this match. With Higgins not yet back to his best, Hendry fading quickly, Hunter sadly battling cancer and the next generation of Selby, Robertson, Ding etc. yet to properly emerge or consolidate themselves as frequent winners, it was a glorious opportunity that year. Maguire had looked the real deal in the 2004-05 season, making the British Open final, winning the UK and hammering a then very dominant O'Sullivan in both of them. Maguire admitted that this match sapped all his discipline and will for the rest of 2005 and it took him 2 or 3 years to really recover. Problem was, by then Selby, Robertson and Ding were in the upper echelons, Higgins and O'Sullivan were virtually passing the world title between them each year and those kind of chances just weren't as frequent anymore (even then, he let Higgins off the hook badly in the 2007 semi finals). Such a talent; really should have a few more trophies to show for it and, in my opinion, should probably have had a Crucible triumph in 2005 or 2006.
Great comment, he has definitely underachieved
You are probably right but you can’t look at things this way. Same way Ronnie could have had 8 world titles by now but he only has 5. Snooker frames get so close sometimes. There are plenty of matches won at black ball. It’s just what it is. This way by this analogy every snooker player are underachievers. I have a list long as hell. From jimmy white to Ali carter or Michael holt or any other.
You’re giving him more credit than he really deserves , he gets described as an underachiever because he won the UK in 2004 as a 23 year old but the only serious opponent he beat in that tournament was O’Sullivan , David Gray Mark King Steve Davis Mark Davis and Stephen Lee were the others , its like he was the party pooper in a designated O’Sullivan festival and has been a bit overrated ever since .
@@alexpaic2984 Ronnie does not need to prove he is better than peak Hendry.
@@alexpaic2984 now he has 6 and should've been 7 if he hadn't allowed Selbys mind games to fuck him up in the 2014 final
this is a turning point in maguires career ! this match hit him so hard ! he was never the same after this match .
What can one say?
Snooker from the gods. - Seriously inspiring.
This is the match that put Stephen in his place and never really recovered. The Same with ding in the masters vs ronnie . The two of them realized just how good he WAS
Wrong that they are professional and won't ever go completely down cause of a match
Ding since then reached the wc final in 2016 won the 2011 masters the uk in 2009 and 2019
When to maguire he won the 2013 welsh open and the last week tour championship
Ok the both of them are underachievers espesially ding who got known for not winning the wc till this day but that has nothing to do with their matches against ronnie
It definitely put a big dent in Maguires confidence because he had the beating of ROS up until this point, he has beat ROS since but lost uk final heavily German masters final
Last frame break one of the best ever, in total control using baulk colours
The last two shots of the match are unbelievable. Pure magic 😍
Showboating.
The black in the 18th frame cut back into a blind pocket, real class.
good editing, as always
Thank you!
2005...oh what a year for O'Sullivan..
bruhhhhhhhhh , what a clearance man , GOD
34:34 what a shot
Legendary
Once again congratulations job well done Ronnie O'Sullivan up the good work May the Lord's blessings be with you please be safe I'm one of your biggest fans in the United States
i still hope Maguire would become a World Champion one of these years, if Ronnie happens to not make it.
Thanks for the video, Cesar, as always! Never seen this match before.
Maguire, so young!
well, i think red ball moved @ 1:37. I've watched it a couple of times and every time it seems that the red moved.
Yeah i thought i was the only one or just too high lol
Obviously i knew the outcome of this match, but looking at just the final few frames, its incredible how strong Ronnie was mentally, and the level of discipline he had at the final frame for example. Not attempting that risky pink which was covered ever so slightly by a red, and instead went up for a baulk color ball, and got down again, and went up again, and so on. Its so nervebreaking to go up for the blue to build a break every single time, even the best players tend to mess it up after the 3rd or 4th attempt, but Ronnie kept himself amazingly intact while building that break with the baulks.
I was aware of his strugglings against Ebdon in the last 16, and now after watching this vid, i have no idea how he could collapse against him so badly.
Hindsight. Wonderful.
Ronnie fav my
Ray was theMosT ExciTed RaY in his enTire Life' lol' good to see excitedment in him'
The video is stopping all the time. Any other video I am watching works perfectly but this one doesn't. It I only me or are there other people with this problem?

@ Haytung Leung what man.
Someone shouted my name?
thats a great quote from Steve there damn
sam samm ikr
Yesss
Steven does come up with some insightful quotes! He's a far better pundit than commentator - he sees mad impossible shots as potential shots during commentary, shots that only a lunatic would consider! :-)
@@EannaButler That's right!... When Steve was playing, I noticed that he never apologized when he was doing a fluke! As if to keep one's opponent in doubt: I may have done it on purpose!
@@fredericpelloud7536 Probably tried to use it for a psychological edge.. He gets very caught up in the psychology during his punditry. Ali Carter does be at the same craic.. Leaving half-chance long reds to guys who are struggling, in order to cement their bad feeling when they miss. Not pretty.
1:35 this is no a foul
Why? 😂
Good eye. I didn't notice the first time, but Maguire's shot did move the red.
Love the way you typed it in Scottish dialect
Bit likes ronnie's in his last tournament
The rail moved it not the cue ball
Well, I think Maguire had by far the best running, never at any time recognised by the commentator, who was very poor.
You think the commentator is watching 16 years after match?
That missed black by MacGuire was the turnaround. After that he was all hangdog and Ronnie picked up on it, spurring him on. He should have maintained his winning expression and shrugged it off. Ronnie was already resigned to losing prior to that.
I was willing him to make a nice safety instead of taking that black on, but this being a historical match he didn't listen :-)
Margin for error...ohhh
Great players all of them
ray reardon is the real reason....for what ronnie has become today..
Where's the Masters' 2020 vids?
Looks like Ray had a few quid on

oh its that year when peter ebdon came back by playing super slow
I guess ronnies worst nightmare is still himself:(
Yeah, it was the match in which Peter took five minutes to make a break of 12.
Stephen actually hit the red if you look closely. It just wobbled a little bit...
😂22:15, look who it is with the long hair. That’s the fella that wears the Argentinian jersey every year in the front row at the world championship.
coventry city i think mate not argentina, lol
Did you notice the scottish-patterned vest that Ronnie is wearing? Is it to honor Stephen?...
Luckily, he refused to wear a kilt ;)
No it was Highland Spring Water Sponsor. They supplied the waist coats.
@Reddan Jones Who's dumb? It was second degree. Ironically, if you understand the word. Humor, in short, given Ronnie's notorious detestation of Hendry. It was probably too hard for you to imagine that a FROG knows the snooker well.
@Reddan Jones Ronnie about Hendry, 2002 :
"The most satisfying thing for me would be to send him home to Scotland as quickly as possible for a nice summer off.
"I'll say hello to him because it's hard to ignore someone - but he's not my cup of tea."
"I know if I do get beat and he comes up and does a moonie in front of me and goes 'nah nah nah', I'll just look at him and say 'well done' and say 'go back to your sad little life'."
No doubt he loved him.

I have a question. How it is possible that being n1 can you faced un first round against world number 3? Thank you
Good observation. In fact, it's impossible that Maguire has been in the top 16. Only data of the start-end of the seasons is available. So, I chose #3 (end) instead of #24 (start), because the WSC is played at the end. But you're right, I should not have put #3. Now I wonder how his ranking rose from, say 17 to 3 by winning one qualifying and then losing in round 1.
@@CesarMuroya That depends on what they consider in the rankings. He did win 9 frames against O'Sullivan this match, if they use some kind of ELO rating then that would be very significant.
@@CesarMuroya The rankings used to be updated once per year after the world championship but changed to a rolling system in 2010/2011with the rankings updated after every tournament. Maguire would have been #24 when the WC's were picked - and had to play a qualifier and face Ronnie. But, as a result of having earlier won the UK Champs, he was promoted to #3 after the WC! Very unfair - hence the change!
@@lsbrother Thank you very much ! Of course, that explain everything. I don't know why I thought it had happened in 2000.
Ronnie won 15 of next 17 matches, this obviously affected Maguire
Maguire has no bottle
1:37 am i too high or did maguire actually hit the red slightly?
I thought it moved too
World "Snoker" Championship?
Corrected, thanks David !
@@CesarMuroya Thanks for the video. Great to see a young Maguire give Ronnie all he could handle.
34:35... Finish Him
2:59 Ronnie made a blunder, the champion like Ronnie was not expected to do such cheap move. He had enough points and this was quite useless. I think he tried this only to impress the spectators. Disappointed
how did the stupid maguire think that he will be able to disturb the green by potting the yellow at 10;00?
Wilbur Thorne commentating, biggest con man in the game.
The commentary is really annoying but I can’t watch without the sound of the balls.
