- Louis Armstrong & Jack Teagarden 'Old Rockin' Chair' Hoagy Carmichael's tune. Does anyone know the date and place of this? I see Bobby Hackett, Peanuts Hucko and perhaps Marty Napoleon. I would say late 40s early 50s but where?.
500 years from now, when people may know little about the presidents and dictators of the 20th century they will still be listening to the great Louis Armstrong.
This is from the first Timex All Star Show, broadcast on NBC on December 30, 1947. Pops brought along his group but on this track, sat in with Jack Teagarden's group, containing many former and future All Stars: Hackett, Hucko, Napoleon, bassist Arvell Shaw and drummer Cozy Cole. It's a great one! - Ricky Riccardi
Bobby Hackett on cornet or trumpet at 2:36..you can see him playing when Louis takes his turn to sing lead. Exceptional piece. I've heard their recorded version on RCA Victor never saw the "Live" piece Thanks Man!!
Hi Jim,
this is a performance from the first "Timex All Star Show", dated December 1957.
Personnel: Louis, Bobby Hackett, Jack Tea, Peanuts Hucko, Marty Napoleon, Arvell Shaw, Cozy Cole.
You will find also on youtube a better technical clip posted by Jan Hammer.
Kind regards,
Uwe
American music "Solid Gold" innovators.
Pops & JT, Right on the duet delivery!!
greatest melody ever
They also perform this, memorably, at the '58 Newport Jazz Festival, and it can be seen on the beautifully filmed JAZZ ON A SUMMER'S DAY (1960). Available via Netflix.
This actually aired on December 30, 1957. Armstong and Teagarden were touring with their "All-Stars" ensemble in '47, and didn't make any TV appearances that year.
wow. just wow.
Louis and Jack T, this is as good as its gets.
great to see two great icons working together in unison, neither one does too much or too little - beautiful
Jim Lowe, thank you so much for upload the video. Louis Armstrong is the magnet of jazz. I look at your video so delightfull than thousand times hear his voice. Cheer's .. cahyo from Surabaya, Indonesia
Hello 1016Ric. I have that Video from the Newport Jazz Festival here in Germany. I recordet it some 10-20 Years ago late at Night from our German TV. Its a great Treasure to me with all that Jazz Giants.. Also the late Anita O'Day is seen on it.
Well, i think i have to play that Video again.
Impossible to top these two! Love them both to pieces!
I love jack and Pops RIP.
Wonderful clip! Thanks for posting.:)
Other than What a Wonderful World, this is my favorite Louis song. Just love that trumpet and teagarden's voice is just soooo Bing Crosbyish.
Happy Birthday, Louis.
great stuff... one of my favorites of Pops.. hands down...
The best musician America ever produced Satchmo The Great. No one can out rap, out sing, or out play him not now not ever.
Two cool cats who obviously did a reefer five feet long just before filming.
Good old Jack Teagarden. He was really a good dude. Go visit New Orleans in the of season and check out where all this stuff got its legs.
A great posting, thank you!!
Ahh well, I was only a month out.... and wrong about the band being the All Stars lol, but you are right about it being a great one!
Great entertainment!
the best!
You got that right!
The coolest cats EVER!
Thanks Dippermouth, This is the one 'Timex Show' that I have not seen. Jim.
That was wonderful, haha. Brought a smile to me
this is music
I'm sorry, I just caught my error...the video is from 1957, not 1947! Thanks for posting it, again! - Ricky
Louis and Jack -- does it get any better?
no better way to start the day than with an existential point of view played so sweetly and earnestly.
I think this is definitely after May 17th 1947 (New York town hall concert) Peanuts Hucko was at that concert but before November 30th 1947 (Symphony Hall concert) where Barney Bigard had joined the All Stars
1958 Newport Jazz Festival
I've just uploaded the track from the 1958 NJF.:)
the art of making people happy is so lost on the present generation...
@ Tom no just old down right talent.
Hello Mr Jim Lowe. Do you live in Fredricksburg, Texas? I have a friend there with the same name.
@susandiane311 Teagarden was actually an American Indian.
non so mai se è più bello questo brano o St. James Infirmary...
3:40 properly expressing!!!!!
Jack Teagarden- The first blue-eyed soul brother?
Great video but why does the German bloke need to be talking?
Teagarden was not Indian. This was a falsehood, not true.
