Great Big Story does this all the time :( They find really interesting people to interview, spend all the time and effort going out to meet them and pry their brains, just to create a video that's not even 3 minutes long :( I really wish they would give us a little more from all their hard work

So it's expensive to buy, still costs to charge, it moves at a walking pace which is pointless, it's prone to curb damage, it's far less environmentally friendly than a standard bike, it's hideous, you can't service it yourself, the wheels are going to get hot from the road/friction along with the motors and batteries in a tight environment, the tires are going to wear and puncture eventually - I could go on and on and on. What a stupid design
1) The center of gravity for all those components in the wheel is BEHIND the steering column, which has the potential to upset the passive self righting properties that the front wheel gives the bike, though I'm not sure if this would be enough to matter. 2) Without spokes to create tension throughout the wheel, it's much easier to make the rim flex (like if you hit a big bump or something), which could dislodge it from those smaller wheels pretty easily. Either that, or you have to add a lot more metal to make the rim strong enough to not flex, increasing the weight. 3) The bearings in those little wheels are going to wear out much faster. With a large wheel with the bearing in the center (as with a regular bike wheel) the wheel will move a good 5 ish feet with each rotation. Those little wheels would only go about 6-7 inches per rotation. Having it rotate 8-10 times more often for the same speed would wear out the bearings much faster. 4) There are so many more easier options for both getting a motor to turn the wheel as well as places to put the electronics, battery, etc. as well as they wouldn't involve the above downsides. I will admit though. It does look pretty cool.
The list can go on and on, because, well, engineers are not needed. 5) the rotational energy is not centered and I doubt he calculated the moment of inertia of the system 6) how big the battery can get in such a space. 7) from an engineering perspective, it is inefficient to have the power transfered from a brushless motor (rotational) to another rotational object using friction. The system will wear out faster than if he just integrate the motor to the hub. 8) Megola did this with a gas engine in 1920 9) monowheels are cooler (same concept)
I have one and put more than 1000 miles on it. No problems. It's sturdy and reliable. The reason it doesn't seem to need spokes is the drive unit presses against the wheel at the same point where impacts from bumps come. The wheel weighs 20 pounds, so it doubles the weight of the bike, but other than that, there is no degradation in balance or ease of biking.
1000 miles is nothing, i know people who do that in a week on their human powered road race bike. It's not a life time reliability test to do 1000 miles. That's just a basic prototype test run not a durability test.
Um yeah I'm not an official tester and I have no relation to the company. I'm just using it and enjoying it and mentioning no issues so far. When I get to 100000 miles I'll let you know.

That's a nice "invention" you got there, oh and in other news, a moped already exists. Also, bikes with this wheel can only go at 20km/h, plus a SINGLE wheel costs 1K. However, the absurdest thing is that he wants to make a version of these for cars. The reason why wheels are driven by an external source of energy is because a transmission system (ie gearbox) allows for much greater efficiency, adaptability and power, in other words, a wheel is just another "empty" gear because it is most efficient and convenient for it to be so. There are entire fields of study and disciplines regarding engines and transmission systems that have been worked on for centuries by brilliant minds, yet this guy, who's not even an engineer mind you, comes along and makes this shoddy niche product that he claims this is the future for automobiles ... it just doesn't get any richer than this.

There is absolutely no reason to make that inner tri-point design and not fill up the entire "empty" space with the motor and battery. So this guy failed at his own proposed idea. There are already some Chinese and Japanese hub wheels with integrated electric motors in them and they look amazing. But I guess it takes another Elon Musk to take notice and invest in that technology.

I remember a similar idea I saw in Popular Science years ago-similar in that it was a wheel/motor combination, but it wasn't “hollow”, and it was gas-powered. The whole assembly spun by pushing against the fork of the bike.
As a mechanical engineering student I can say with great confidence that this wheel is not nearly as efficient as a regular hub engine and will deteriorate at an extremely fast rate.
That whole thought of "if it could be done, it would have been done already" is dangerously stupid. Advancements in technology don't just pop out of nothingness. And they require more than the know-how and capability. They require the vision. They require a creation. To ignore that is incredibly foolish. Consider the fact that something is only valuable once someone sees the value in it. this literally looks clunky and dorky as shit. there is literally no design merit to it. the copenhagen wheel actually pays homage to its cycling roots and is a lot simpler.
Looks cool because at some point it looks imposible and it has a reason... think of the weight distribution and loads in just a few points, and the huge amount of moving parts awaiting to fail in different axis than those the wheel itself and its movement suggest
as a side note i believe this will reduce the bycicles stability since the whole wheel is not spinning it will lessen gyroscopic effect that a wheel has

Which is a freaking joke because they’re a global corporation and make more money than we can personally contemplate, so even if they’re the most accommodating of the big oil conglomerates that’s not worth praising really because they’re still apart of the lobbying machine that’s held up getting alternative energy farther off the ground than it is. It’s one thing where an individual highlights their attempt to negate climate change and another when the major corporation that’s paying representatives on both sides of the aisle says hey look at this cute indie guy we gave a sheckle to. Because we care.

Ever heard of hub based motors? Seems like they retain the strength of the wheel, by still keeping the spokes, and are generally much less complicated. I’m worried that the rim will get bent quickly or even collapse. And it would seem, that there’s no way to true the wheel, since there aren’t any spokes.
Interesting concept. But it needs to be sturdy as hell. Not to mention if you put this concept Into a car you need 4 of these. I dread the repair bill when you hit a pot hole.

There's a reason people told this guy not to quit his day job. in 9 universes out of 10, this video is the peak of his success. Great idea... but been done better, faster, stronger, cheaper long time now.
It looks a lot like early motorized bikes (1946-1960), the principle was often the same use a smaller wheel to make the bigger one move. Don't need to say all those designs were quickly abandoned because of inefficiency.
How does the price compare to an electric bicycle, which already exist? The reason they don't put the motor in the wheel is because most engines decide to utilize gearing. Is this motor more efficient than a traditional electric bicycle?

It can go up to 20 miles on a single charge, on hilly terrain your mileage may vary, and it can be charge by pedaling, too.

It can be installed on any bike
Well, you can power the front wheel. But that could be done with a hubbed wheel, you'd just have a motor sticking out of the side.

I’m worried that the rim will get bent quickly or even collapse. And it would seem, that there’s no way to true the wheel, since there aren’t any spokes.

It looks a lot like early motorized bikes (1946-1960), the principle was often the same use a smaller wheel to make the bigger one move. Don't need to say all those designs were quickly abandoned because of inefficiency.

How does the price compare to an electric bicycle, which already exist? The reason they don't put the motor in the wheel is because most engines decide to utilize gearing. Is this motor more efficient than a traditional electric bicycle?
