My little brother (8th grade at the time) had meet n greet passes for Metallica at MSG. Once he was in the bowels of the Garden - Jason was the only one to come out for pics and autographs. The timing was perfect as Jason was on the front cover of Bass Player magazine that month. So my brother brought two copies with him and Jason signed one to my brother and one for me. Great times.
I love the growth Jason had during the black album’s recording. He took great responsibility in trying to create real basslines and not just guitar doubling. Mad respect to him
I saw in an interview where Jason said he recorded this on a 4 string, but used a 5 string set and dropped the low B to low A. Killer cover and GREAT tone!
1981 Spector NS-2! Even with this cheaper model (Korean, not US Made) you can hear the signature Spector quality but if you want that nasty brutal deep growl, gotta find an old school Haz preamp or order one from the shop in Woodstock, NY. The Spector sound is top notch and very unique but for live scenarios I loved when he stuck to Alembic (Spoiler, Elan, and the Europa which was the six string for Sad live through end of '93)
absolutely nailed it! would you ever consider uploading your isolated tracks, even if they are just unlisted and linked in the description? i wouldn't mind hearing your tone isolated and i'm sure i'm not the only one!
Great! I was wondering why the end of this sonf is so expressive. Now I know - that's because bass notes are played long - not as short picks while the main song.

Ha thanks! You could get pretty close with a bass that has active double humbucker pickups and a reverse smiley face EQ. I tried this for years but nothing gets close to the tone from a Spector with EMGs 🎸🤤👌
Also, I think your the only cover on youtube that properly played the fill in the intro with the chorus effect. Good job! I'm assuming that you listened to the isolated track? It's pretty quiet on the album.
@@Alejandro-zd5jd I think that it had some of the most audible basslines in Metallica's catalogue, like on the songs Enter Sandman or The God that Failed
Hi I am playing a 5-string bass (BEADG) can you explain which tuning I would have to use to play this song? I love it and I always wanted to play it but, I have seen about three different tunings for this so I am really confused. Yours sounds best by the way. Thank you. Z
Thanks, yeah a lot of bad tabs out there for Metallica including some in the official tab books 🙈 but if you tune your 5 string bass down a whole step (A D G C F) you'll be able to follow the tab in the video 🤘
@@JamesDixon - thank you so much for this answer and so promptly. I will def. tune down a whole step and see if I can make sense when I play! :D- I will post a video if I finally 'nail' this song haha..
@@JamesDixon thanks dude! Im fairly new to the world of bass. i have been playing guitar for some time now. Put it away for a few years due to some issues. and now back in music on bass due to getting in a band. Naturally i got into studying the bass and how it sounded and played on my fav songs. and then found your covers! \m/ Keep the great work dude. I'm even thinking of getting a 5 version of your spector. Would you mind telling me about your experience with it?
@@tibi1687 That's wicked, learning the bass after playing guitar will make it easier I bet, have fun! Yeah sure, so I first bought a Spector Legend 6 as my first 6 string bass back in 2008! Unfortunately it arrived with a massive crack in the body so had to be shipped back and I only had a day or two to play with it. The same year the prices of Spector basses went up in the UK considerably for some reason, so I couldn't afford to buy a new one 😞 I ended up buying the other 6 string basses in my videos in the meantime from rondo music and thomonn etc but it wasn't until last year I spotted a legend in the same colour for sale on eBay at a great price and managed to win it 🙌 As soon as I got it and plugged it in I realised how much I missed that tone and regretted not trying to get another one in the preceding 11 years 🙈 The bass has since become probably my favourite bass to play given its in more of my videos than any of the others, so I can't recommend the Spector legend series enough, for the price the tone and quality is unmatched 🎸
Thank you! From what I recall the body is basswood with a quilted maple top 👌 no distortion pedal needed, the spector sounds leary out of the box so I just play it with a very heavy touch and this is the sound that comes out, great basses 👍
@@JamesDixon I'm just saying what was the point of him playing a 6 string or even a 5 string on this song if he only uses 4 strings? I wasn't being a dick, I just thought it was interesting and always thought he must have used the low B string in there somewhere.
Must be a reason as no way he'd carry the weight of a 6 string alembic for nothing night after night for all those years. Maybe it held the low tuning better than his 4/5 strings??

Glad to see someone appreciates newstead. Burton was a legend and what happened was heartbreaking but newstead was a great bassist too.
Yeah man, Newsted's the reason I play bass 🤘
@@JamesDixon Same here man Newsteads a legend
he's also the king of backing vocals
All three are great.
Actually, Newstead was/is by far better than that hippie.

My favorite from Black Album. Amazing groove. Congrats!
Bro that's a sick bass! Anyway great video
Thanks! It's a Spector Legend 6 string, more videos to come with this bass 👌
I would like Metallica's bass sound more distinct like you James did here. Thanks a lot! Now I hear how Newstead really sounds))
Thank you 🤘Yes shame about Metallica is they have great bassist but they are very difficult to hear 😞
Hell yeah, some Jason 🤘🎸 Nice 6 strng!

Great right hand finger picking technique 🤘🏼thank you for this video
Love your 6 string!
& ur solid playing of it.

Awesome cover and great tone!

Love your bass tone and great video as always
Thank you 👍🤘
Hey man, great video. This is very helpful for I am learning that song for a cover band right now.
Liked and subscribed. Keep it up.
Thanks! Glad to hear. Subscribed and hope to see a video of your sad but true cover on your channel soon 👌

I do but not as much as I like the song crush 👌
Bad ass brother! Watched this several times well done sir!!!!!

Damn my guy that is one hell of a tone!Could you give us plebs any eq settings to come close to this tone without having a spector?

Amazing tone… how’d you achieve that?

Thanks, you have a good ear to catch that 👏 yeah I always listen to the master bass tracks while tabbing or creating a cover if they are available 🎸
@@JamesDixon Cool, thanks!
Metallica has less audible bass lines besides from and justice for all. I think the black album wasn't that bad in this topic

So the fifth string is just used for the slide at the end?
That's what I heard when tabbing from the isolated bass track. Jason used the 5th string much more during live performances.
@@JamesDixon Maybe he used the fifth fret a bunch of times instead of 0 on the next?
do you use darkglass o something?
Nah guy, I don't own a single darkglass pedal
So what is the point of playing this on a 6 string if it could be played on a 4 string tuned to D? Because Newsted thought it looked cool?
I don't have a four string to tune to D 👍 Jason used a 6 string live for this song for years and years

What bass guitar is this?
All gear is listed in the video description 👆👍
@@JamesDixon alright thank you
I believe Newsted usually played a 4 string bass, I've heard 5 string basses are a bitch to play.
What you believe and hear is wrong. You won't find a video of Jason playing this song without a 5 or 6 string bass.
Please, watch this video in speed 1.8 and see the magic.
I be listening to this cover more than the original 🤣 the tone is just too nasty
