- This is a short list of some (but nowhere near all) of the technique snippets I could just pull up on short notice from Naihanchi Shodan. These are things Taika Seiyu Oyata pulled from the bunkai process into techniques.
The amount of things Taika used from just this one kata are probably 10x the list presented here, and after we shut down he cameras more and more things kept popping into my mind from the decades of training and decades of Oyata presentations, demonstrations, et cetera.
Naihanchi Shodan was probably Taika's best documented, most referenced kata and he repeatedly referred to it as the most important. - Спорт
Excellent as always! Great bunkai for Naihanchi Shodan
Very good explanation for this kata..thank you
Noone, I repeat noone (I have seen them all) has the ability to explain, demonstrate and teach Taika Seiyu Oyatas knowledge better than Lee Richards and if you don't perceive that you need new glasses!
Thank you!
Though I suspect this is only the tip of the iceberg, it's fantastic! I'd love to see videos like this for Shigeru Nakamura's other kata as well.
That is the plan as soon as my favorite Uke and I can align our schedule.
What keeps the opponent from circling to your back with the arm levers from the opening Naihanchi movement? Thanks.
Speed and angle of his arm. Steve, the uke, would much prefer to take my back with his BJJ background but he couldn't, he would have to go to a thumb forward or up position in order to get the bend in the arm that would allow him to close the gap. He tried several times in class prior to this as well as other BJJ cross-overs that attend. We also pressure test with police BJJ classmates and peers. There would also be more Atemi if this was not just an intro instructional video. Also the technique would not end there, it would go to a prone pin immediately.
I would like to get his information so as to maybe train with him.
As in Lee, the guy in the white?

I wish your camera had been closer.
You can watch it in 4k and zooming in should get you a pretty decent view.
