@DAOzz83 Absolutely. The Cyclone is one of the best woodies on the planet, Imo. The Tornado was a nice coaster as well. The original Thunderbird coaster did give the Cyclone a run for its money when it was running properly.
My parents would never let me ride it, but my Grandfather took me and a neighbor to Rockaway Playland where we rode the roller coaster over 101 times! Later in life I got to ride the replica of the Coney Island Cyclone at Magic Mountain in California! Great footage! I do remember seeing this coaster and something about arsonists trying to burn it down. We often went to Nathan's, the best time was in the winter when there was hardly anyone there!
Omg I love this footage! I wish they’d bring it back!!! Rye play land had the same coaster it was called the bobs airplane coaster. It was demolished in 1957 , it’s the same style. This one was called the bobs then renamed to the tornado.
First roller coaster I ever rode. I distinctly remember the mural of the tornado in loading area. Cyclone is the all time best at Coney Island, but I sure do miss the Tornado. Gone but not forgotten.
Arsonists destroyed it...they burned it a few times, and finally the owners gave up. Such a shame!! They should rebuilt this again at Coney in the same style, it'd be brilliant. And they have the area to do it.
..tornado/coney: the only coaster I ever rode where I could never trace the motion after the chain incline -- It was a blurrrrr!!! Fav & fab ride, never forgotten! ride!!!!
The 'untraditional' rollercoaster was 'The Bobsled' which I believe was located in front of the 'Tornado.' I'd been on the 'Tornado' many times, but my hands-down favorite was the 'Bobsled' because it didn't ride on tracks once the cars were released from the initial incline. Thank you for sharing this wonderful footage!
Wow ! Great RARE historic footage . Was the Bobsled (flying turns )1941- 1974 ride still operating at this time ? Don't you wish more parks were Knoebels like-minded when it comes to bringing back classics like the Tornado ?
The Bobsled was operating on my first visit to Coney Island which was 1972. I'd never heard of a Flying Turns. I saw the "tunneled" roller coaster and got on and my riding partner screamed at the top of the lift "there's no track". I think I only rode once, sadly. But I'm glad to have the Knoebels version, and happy to have the Mack version at Kings Dominion.
Loved this coaster. Was the one to break my fear of roller coasters. This was the warm-up to the cyclone. Heartbroken when it burned down 😢
So you’re saying that the Cyclone is a wilder ride than the Tornado was? Disappointing… but interesting to learn!

Yep they did burn it bad enough that they tore the whole block down in 1978

The Tornado is back. Been back for over 17 years. It is orange and white.
Absolutely amazing video! Can't believe this has only 100 views. I'm definitely sharing this.
Thankfully the great Cyclone is still running at Coney. Even at 70 years old I still take the subway out there just to ride it once a year.
Thank you for sharing this. I was too young to ride it when it was still operational and by the time I was old enough, it had been razed.
Awesome video!!! :)
I still miss the old thunder bolt!!
great fun ride....had sweeping fast diving turns...instead of steep drops

What hasn't been burned down in CI?
This is the closest I will ever get to be on one of these rides. I'm scared to death. What year was this?
