God, the bit in the book where the ComfortUnits break off to do damage control, and one by one stop responding, absolutely wrecked me. You did a great job of conveying that here, ouch. Beautiful work.
I just ran across a link to this and it's so beautifully constructed! Everything fits together incredibly well to tell the story, both the external action and the internal responses. My favorite bits are the way Murderbot's reactions are conveyed through its system notifications, like the performance reliability dropping and the low power warning bringing Murderbot back to itself and the present. And the way the visual movement and use of lights and lighting works with the music is phenomenal. Thank you so much for this!
I love the character design for Murderbot - I like that it's so sturdy-looking. That combination of visible strength and vulnerability is very touching. I also really appreciated that there are fat people working in this installation :) The whole thing had a very spooky feel, but the comfort units' feeds going dark one by one really brought home the horror. Love it!
I just finished rereading Artificial Condition, and I knew I had to rewatch this animation. Everything about this video, from the monochrome color scheme, to the blurry pixels, to the unnerving music, conveys how unsettling and horrifying this scene is. You can feel the dread as Murderbot pieces together what happened, and the scene where the four ComfortUnits' feeds drop out one by one is chilling. This is REALLY well made. Thank you for sharing your art!
This is so beautiful. The transitions? Especially the map one? They’re so clever Murderbot’s expressions are so clear, it’s like the emotions are just waiting on it’s face It’s so great to see
Wow! You did such a great job of conveying the horror of what happened, I didn't realize at first that the comfort units' feeds going dark meant they died, and when I did I had to rewatch the whole thing again. Chilling
Interesting juxtaposition between the upbeat falsetto vocal driven electronica and the very dark themeof Ganaka Pit. Interesting that you chose to give Murderbot so much hair! Really loved this. Would love to see more Murderbot inspired videos from you.
I love this. Now that I've finished everything published to date in the series, I need to go back to that section and reread this scene. Because initially, I assumed MB was a fairly reliable narrator, but as the books progressed I began to realize that's not the case, and there are so many cues I might have missed first read-through. Your video really highlights what an impactful scene that was, and how underplayed in the writing!, it must have been pivotal and wrenching for MB. Thank you for doing this video. I came here from a link/recc from Martha Wells herself on her DW page.
Absolutely amazing! How have I not seen this before?! The animation style is perfect for the horror and derealization of the Ganaka Pit story!! The four glitchy sections of the screen were amazing and added a heartbreaking reality to it al!! ahhh!!!!
This is gorgeous! The disjointed clips and divided screen and the glitching are so beautifully evocative, and what a perfect song to put it to. Love all of this.
This was so well done. The lyrics of the first verse about the broken train seem so well suited to the descent into Ganaka Pit it’s hard to imagine the song being about anything else now. The blurriness is a good technique, although it took my second watch through to understand it wasn’t a buffering problem on my end. SecUnit curling up on the floor and rocking a bit was so poignant. I just want one of its humans to sit nearby close enough to touch but not touch. The song says what SecUnit has trouble saying: “it’s as if I’m scared, it’s as if I’m terrified…” This has become like episode 244 of Sanctuary Moon for me. The song plays in my head at random times like background music and brings back all these emotions. It’s changed my view of how powerful the scene is, which was already sad and inspiring from the ComfortUnits’ heroism. I have trouble extrapolating beyond SecUnit’s understated narration, and this video showed more of what likely happened during Rogue Protocol.
Thank you so much! And oddly that's a great thing to hear about the pixellation effect, it's meant to have that sort of digital- fault vibes. I can't think of the song as anything else either anymore, when I had the idea it felt like I was revealing something that already existed haha.
Aaaahhhh! This is beautiful and heartbreaking. It really makes the horror of the events stand out, and Murderbot's facial expressions were absolutely amazing, it conveyed so much emotion
MAN this rulessss im going thru a reread of the series rn and youve somehow managed to capture that bizzare and aching loneliness that the visit to ganaka pit has. also god the mika song fits so perfectly im kind of obsessed
Aww this was so well done. Really evoked that part of the books...wow. Super sad, but by that I mean, you really nailed it! The music contrasted with the visuals, the knowledge that it wasn't MB's fault, but that what happened was still horrible...all of the nuance is there.
This was absolutely amazing and horrifying. Wow. I love your character designs and the way you drew Ganaka Pit itself, and this song was perfect. Thanks for sharing!
This is such an incredible visualization. While there are many points that I think are worth singling out to remark on how emotive and smooth they are, 1:50-1:55 was an impactful little moment. Every re-read I undertake from now on, I'll most definitely be thinking of this video. This is marvelous. You should feel proud!
Wow, what a cool thing you've made! The music works perfectly with this, and I love the contrast between the kinda peppy tunes and the dark content. You can really tell how much care and effort you've put into this. Ok I'm gonna watch it again now, just wanted to let you know I dig this so much!
This is such a cool animation! I haven't seen any other Murderbot themed things on UA-cam, so this was a lovely surprise! The song fits really well with the atmosphere you've made 😊.
This is so cool! I love the art direction and the way you worked the split screen. The pixelation was a great effect and the map really helped me follow the action. Great work!!!!
this was so good!! TToTT I've been rereading the series and this part is so heart wrenching to read. You really captured the desperation of the past with the helpless regret of murderbot, its impotent anger and frustration. So well done!
the combination of your chosen audio and visuals, and the audio and visuals themselves, was really really awesome!!! like, holy shit!!! Also, your animation looks really good.
We are delighted to let you know (and a little embarrassed to let you know so late!) that we've chosen your vid to screen at Friday night's WisCon Vid Party. Please note: this year's Guest of Honor, is in fact, Martha Wells :D WisCon is a volunteer-run organization exploring the intersections of feminisms, science fiction, and fantasy. We are excited for folks to see and be moved by your vid!
i come back to this pretty regularly. chills every single time. the art, the way mb becomes more and more distressed as it views the comfort unit's logs... ohhh man. this was the first place i heard "relax" and it's one of my favorite songs now.
holy FUCK this is good. the way the feeds cut out one at a time, the jerky start and stop movement, the way you show murderbot powering things and the map… everything in this animation is just perfectly done. even knowing exactly how it would go i was still on the edge of my seat right up to the end. and GOD the song choice, that’s just evil
hey, your art is insane. like, this is beautiful - every shot is so well done and it feels like you put so much love into this. also, the map effect to split up scene is inspired and i love the electricity dots when MB is plugged in! thank you so much for sharing your hard work, I'm gonna rewatch this compulsively 10 times in a row
This is really neat..thank you...myself, I always picture Murderbot looking like Micheal Fassbinder ('cos I'm a fan ), but your rendition works great...really like it..
I wasn't sure whether to reply to this, but being non-binary myself, I do just want to say - genderless and non-binary humans can look any way, including this. And a large amount of gender cues are in presentation, and unfortunately the world as we live in it genders comfortable, easy to maintain, low-effort looks (Murderbot's preference!) masculine.
That’s the good thing about Murderbot, we can envision it anyway we want. Most women tend to imagine it as having androgynous/female characteristics, due to its love of soap operas and the fact that it doesn’t have genitals (and testosterone - for the most part - is produced in the testes) No judgement though, there is no right or wrong answer here. 😊
Thanks to Murderbot diaries, “I’m having An Emotion” is now a part of my daily vocabulary. This applies when watching this animatic
God, the bit in the book where the ComfortUnits break off to do damage control, and one by one stop responding, absolutely wrecked me. You did a great job of conveying that here, ouch. Beautiful work.

I really like how well you captured a non-binary look for Murderbot. It's solid and strong without being overly masculine.
This is so beautiful. The transitions? Especially the map one? They’re so clever
Murderbot’s expressions are so clear, it’s like the emotions are just waiting on it’s face
It’s so great to see
And because it's alone, it doesn't have to worry about what its face is doing... 🖤
Wow! You did such a great job of conveying the horror of what happened, I didn't realize at first that the comfort units' feeds going dark meant they died, and when I did I had to rewatch the whole thing again. Chilling

This is one of the things that I love about the series - as far as I can tell, Murderbot is truthful, but not honest.
This scene didn’t hit me as hard as it should have until I watched this video
Absolutely amazing! How have I not seen this before?! The animation style is perfect for the horror and derealization of the Ganaka Pit story!! The four glitchy sections of the screen were amazing and added a heartbreaking reality to it al!! ahhh!!!!

I just... wow. I am crying now. this part of the book was one I struggled with but this has just made it so perfect and in place. thank you
a few days ago i heard "Relax (Take It Easy)" playing on the radio in a shop and it Hit Different
MAN this rulessss im going thru a reread of the series rn and youve somehow managed to capture that bizzare and aching loneliness that the visit to ganaka pit has. also god the mika song fits so perfectly im kind of obsessed

This video brings me to tears reliably as it hammers home the horror of the events. A+ job.

I love how the pixellated effects are used, this whole thing is so great
OMG a new Murderbot animatic! How did I miss this! When the comfort units appeared, I got chills 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Wow, what a cool thing you've made! The music works perfectly with this, and I love the contrast between the kinda peppy tunes and the dark content. You can really tell how much care and effort you've put into this. Ok I'm gonna watch it again now, just wanted to let you know I dig this so much!

Wow what a great job! The discovery in Ganaka pits and Miki's sacrifice are the two saddest parts of the series
This is so cool! I love the art direction and the way you worked the split screen. The pixelation was a great effect and the map really helped me follow the action. Great work!!!!
Holy shit, this is gorgeous and heartbreaking (and I'll never think of this song the same way again)
this is beautiful! you conveyed the events and Murderbot's recollection of them so well
this was so good!! TToTT I've been rereading the series and this part is so heart wrenching to read. You really captured the desperation of the past with the helpless regret of murderbot, its impotent anger and frustration. So well done!

I love the Murderbot series, so I’m SHOCKED that I’ve never seen this up until now. This was FANTASTIC!

this was the first place i heard "relax" and it's one of my favorite songs now.
This is fantastic! Absolutely brilliant song choice and excellent art and editing too. Thank you for sharing!
This is amazing! When I saw the song choice I was like "oh, huh" but then as it started I was like holy shit this fits perfectly!
oh god I have no idea how to compliment art but this is GLORIOUS
Amazing! You completely captured the feeling of the narrative. SO impressed!
Right in the feels! Love this
That facial animation at 3:37 is so good!
thank you! i was learning all the time.
This is amazing, thanks for sharing
Loved the visual storytelling of this. The stylization is perfect for showing what happened! 🤩
Wowowow I love this! It's so visceral and conveys exactly the right feelings without actually showing that much. Great work
holy FUCK this is good. the way the feeds cut out one at a time, the jerky start and stop movement, the way you show murderbot powering things and the map… everything in this animation is just perfectly done. even knowing exactly how it would go i was still on the edge of my seat right up to the end. and GOD the song choice, that’s just evil
I applaud your artistic ability. You get so much anguish into the facial expressions!
artists really are the backbone of this community :) great work!!
Ive watched and rewatched this! It's so fluid while showing how much it affects MB!!
Very nice! I like the drawing style you chose, and Murderbot’s features and body are spot on!
This is a really hard scene to visually represent and you did a fantastic job!!
I just reread the Ganaka Pit part last night and oof, the feels. Thanks for the video ❤
This is beautifully done! Makes me cry.
this is wonderful
As always, so well done, bravo!
Absolutely gorgeous! And the song is perfect!
This video deserves more engagement

Love the video and the clips. I envisioned Murderbot more gender neutral looking though. Nevertheless, great job!
