  • One of my favorite lifts. Sadly, many people either don't know it exists or don't think it merits serious attention and effort. It's time to change that.

    I do push press from the floor(cleaning it up) as my main upperbody lift, truly my favorite lift. I never bench since I chose to just do whats important to me as opposed to ”what you should”, even though i’m kind of naturally inclined towards benching.
    Moving something from the floor to overhead is truly the best test of raw strength imo.

  • @seanking6184

    Far more functional than the bench press and when the overhead press was an Olympic lift it was heavily emphasised by lifters.
    Shame it disappeared for awhile.

    Definitely feel the push press much more in my upper back and traps much more than the press. I think it’s due to stabilizing at the lock out.

    • @09thespecialone
      @09thespecialone 3 роки тому +1

      They are completely two different exercices. The Press (always strict by definition) develops pure shoulder strength. The push press is mostly about hips and legs with use of momentum. The carryover is from the Press to the push press. Not the other way around. The Press is definitely more beneficial (the most difficult part of the press is to push the bar off the clavicles at deadstop. And when you push press, you avoid that part. Push press only overload the lockout muscles at the top. Not the shoulders primary).

    what if your training is specific to powerlifting? Is there a place for push presses?

    • @EnkiriElite
      @EnkiriElite  6 років тому +17

      A lot of people would tell you that it's wasted time/energy when it comes to powerlifting, but in my opinion that's a bit shortsighted, especially when it comes to novice/intermediate lifters. I think that being overly specific with all of your work too early in the game is a mistake that will ultimately hinder your progress and shortchange your development as a lifter. And maybe even lead to injury down the road. If you're already benching elite numbers then obviously you have to be very specific to yield any training effect, but if you're still developing then I'm of the opinion that it's a good idea to incorporate a wide variety of different exercises and there's no better way to get more bang for your buck than with big compound lifts like the push press that allow you to use a lot of weight, stress a lot of big muscle groups, and increase coordination, athleticism, and power.
      TL;DR - Beginners and intermediates should incorporate multiple different exercises rather than restricting themselves solely to the powerlifts in order to enhance long term strength/development.

    • @EnkiriElite

    Do you recommend push presses be done in a flat or heeled shoe?

    • @EnkiriElite
      @EnkiriElite  6 років тому +5

      Nino Rota I prefer the heel. It makes it easier to keep your heels planted firmly while still getting good leg drive. But it's not necessary, it's just what I'm used to.

    Hello great video a new subscriber.
    I had a question if you did Heavy Farmers walks 3 times a week would that be enough for leg growth?
    Or would you still need to squat and possibly do some other form of deadlifting?
    Thanks....!!!

    • @EnkiriElite
      @EnkiriElite  6 років тому +7

      Eric Hill it might make your legs grow a small amount initially if you're relatively untrained, but after a short period of time you would not see anymore increases in leg size. If you really want to get big legs you've got to include some form of deep knee flexion work. It doesn't necessarily have to be squatting per se, but definitely something of that ilk.

    • @sergiotl7378
      @sergiotl7378 5 років тому +2

      hadhad129 I can't judge your form only from your comment above, but you may be missing bringing back your head (as if you wanted to hide it inside your neck) on the initial phase of the ascent. The moment the bar goes beyond your head, then you can bring it again to its normal position. Practice with light weights first, and not to full speed till you grasp it. When you're sure about your form then you can start speeding it up and going heavy. Regarding your elbows being high like a front squat, in my opinion that's how you're supposed to push press. That's how olympic weightlifters do it. It makes sense, since that forces you to initiate the movement by exploding with your legs, and not with you arms, like most people will tend to do. Arms should come into play a bit later.

    Could I do this after benching on my upper day so like, pullup>bench>row>push press>shrug>arms super set>abs/lower back super set. Or would u do it at the start since it's a power movement

    • @EnkiriElite
      @EnkiriElite  6 років тому +1

      Lewis Boys it depends on what you want to prioritize. If you care about benching more then bench first. If you care about push pressing more then push press first. Or just do them on separate days. You could still easily bench press 1-2x a week and push press 1-2x a week while having 3 upper body days.

    • @Lb-ri5wr
      @Lb-ri5wr 6 років тому

      Alec Enkiri I care more about benching tbh, I already do strict military press but it's like the only lift that I can't get up, probably cos I don't put it first in my routine. I do two upper and two lower days, one volume and one intensity of each day so I do bench twice a week, usually with one day being with bands or floor press or summat a bit different to standard bench, then I do my vertical presses around 4th/5th in the routine

    • @EnkiriElite
      @EnkiriElite  6 років тому +2

      Well, the strict press and the push press offer pretty distinct benefits. Doing one or the other vs. both would not be redundant, imo. Either way, you should put your priority first in the workout, so bench first. That said, there's no reason you can't move your overhead stuff earlier into the workout though before doing all that other work which I'm assuming is just more horizontal pressing.

    • @Lb-ri5wr
      @Lb-ri5wr 6 років тому

      Well I alternate my exercise so it's pull push pull push etc, that's why my ohp is my forth movement, thank you for the quick responses, I think I'll just replace strict press with push press for a few weeks anyway just to try it properly
