Pipe Tobacco Review: Samuel Gawith "Lakeland Dark"

  • Yet ANOTHER new blend from Samuel Gawith, "Lakeland Dark." Supposedly similar to "1792 Flake" but without the tonquin bean casing, this is a dark, steamed Virginia blend with a touch of Kentucky tobacco. Not for the faint of heart.
From www.gawithhogga... : "Dark air cured Virginia and Kentucky tobaccos are cold pressed for a few hours before it is steam pressed for several hours at full heat. This gives the blend a strong, powerful and creamy smoke."

I tried this stuff last year, and the tobacco was moldy, but I didn't realize that it was moldy (yes, I am clearly an idiot, as tobacco should not have white stuff on it). I smoked a medium-sized bowl, and became more intoxicated than I have ever been from smoking ANYTHING. I was left drooling and trying with all my might to not fall out of my chair.

The white stuff might have been sugar cristals from aging in the tin.. smoking this right now and it is strong

Any chance of reviewing both 1792 flake and macbaren old dark fired? Your reviews are possibly the best online. Would really like to know your thoughts on those two please

Almost definitely on ODF and maybe on 1792. I've had a sample of 1792 and didn't love it. Thanks for watching!

I guess this one has been discontinued. I wonder if it was too similar to Dark Flake Aromatic, which you should definitely review one day. Kendal Dark is also amazing.

Thanks for a pleasant clip. Ordered a tin of Lakeland Dark so let's see...have you smoked Gawith's Sam's Flake and Balkan Flake....I think both of them are nice.
    Have a great weekend.

Let me recommend Wessex Campaign Dark Flake. Also Astley's Dark Virginia Flake, I think it's number 44. Very good blends and they have changed my mind on straight Virginias. Both made by K&K I believe

Great review! Definitely on my to-buy list! Love both 1792 and Brown No. 4. Would love to see a review of Brown No. 4. Now that is a nicotine beast!

Great review as always! Though I am not sure that it is that similar to the ropes (and certainly not Black XX), it is clearly related to 1792 and the Bracken flake. Would btw love to hear your thoughts on the Black XX rope, now THAT blend is (as far as I know) unique.

Bracken flake is my lost love. Found three runs at my tobacconist and that's all I've got left of it. Such a strange and beautiful smoke

Black XX is like smoking barbecued Ribs smothered in BBQ sauce and ashes. It's the most peculiar tobacco i've ever smoked.

Early on, the reviews came back really poorly, and they seem to continue to. You seem to be on the other end of that spectrum. Perhaps I will get just 1 and give it a whirl. I have had bad luck with the Irish Flake, but I plan to work it through some different bowls to see it it will make a difference. Thanks, Bradley.

I suspect this is Gawith's way of compensating for the loss of Bracken Flake, which was discontinued a few years ago. Bracken was often described as 1792 without the Tonquin (i cannot confirm this in any way since ive never tried 1792...). However, Bracken was a flake (duh), not rubbed, and it had a slight topping (anise?), very noticeable in the tin note, but not in the actual taste itself (at least in my opinion). Your description of Lakeland Dark's taste seems to be quite close to what i get from Bracken. Cheers !

So funny this was posted today. Today was the day I cracked open my Lakeland Dark. I agree with your perceptions 100% Couldn't have said it any better. I used a slightly smaller pipe, one I use for "testing" tobaccos. I disliked 1792 Flake but loved this. I smoked it before breakfast, but only for 3 or 4 minutes. It made me feel ready for breakfast, but not sick. It is strong. Great video!

Strictly speaking, Samuel Gawith and Gawith Hoggarth are two separate brands. SG moved all their equipment into GH's larger factory last year, but they still work seperately on their own baccies. They have a friendly competition, SG producing the tinned varieties which have a more mainstream appeal, GH more loose tobaccos for the seasoned specialist smokers. GH's revor plug my all time fave.

    • @stuffandthingsyoutube

The company is called Gawith-Hoggarth now. They still brand things separately, but they are part of the same entity.

Thanks for your review. Off topic, however, interested if you could put a video together expressing your thoughts in regards to the impact of the FDA and its impact to the pipe industry. From the outside very confusing and makes many people nervous in regards to being able to purchase there favourite pipe tobacco and maybe there favourite pipes in the future. Your thoughts.? Thanks for your Chanel, Cj

Have you had any of the Kendal shags? I've been smoking a lot of the Kendal Dark, and it's really good. Might be too reminiscent of cigarettes for you as it resembles a strong Halfzware to me, but if you don't mind that it is excellent, and the most easily lit tobacco I've ever smoked in a pipe.

S'up buddy. Just popping in to say that you're the only tobacco reviewer on UA-cam who I can find that does a good job of actually describing the flavor profiles. Your descriptions of flavor notes are concise, direct and relatable. Keep it up! Appreciate your work. Cheers. Btw, I watch your vids to get a better understanding of the ecig juice recipes I create in the tobacco category.
