- Villa Romana del Casale, built between the 3rd and 4th century A.D., was partially destroyed by an earthquake in the 12th century. However, the mosaics adorning nearly every room were preserved by a mudslide and survived in nearly pristine condition until they were rediscovered by archeologists some 700 years later. They remain one of the finest collections of Roman tile work in the world.

A mudslide helped protect these intricate works of art, allowing them to be enjoyed hundreds of years later. What do you think about these mosaics?
It's amazing how the beautiful artwork has been well preserved throughout history. Good job on the effort for its restoration, too. The artwork looks like it has a lot of stories to tell. Would love to visit it one day. Thanks for sharing National Geographic.
Beautiful! These mosaics are probably the closest we'll ever get to time travel. I assume the artist back then depicted what he saw daily...making it a window into their world👍👏👏👏👏
I saw something similar to this scale on the floor of a church in Jordan.its on the hill where Moses stood with the 10 commandments
Ancient Roman women used bikini 2000 years before it was invented in 1946 by the French. Truly amazing.
Now that's art. Surprisingly resilient too!
Gorgeous. What a treat it would be to see it in person.
Beautiful and so well preserved 😍
I'd love to visit this someday
That's incredible how the Earth swallows up the past!
beautiful
So beautiful, I would love to see it in person some day.
Nice touch with the dialogue box blocking out 1/6th of the picture at all times.
Now that's what I call a floor!. Would love to have one of these, they're cool ,arty and gorgeous at the same time. Don't have this style anymore do we?. IT's a shame.
I want to see close ups of every bit of those mosaics along with notes on what I'm looking at.
Thanks!
Hail! Nepal!!!
If anyone knows the composer please let me know!
What is the source of the music in this video!? I must know!
Belissima
can somebody tell me what is the title of the background music? it's so calm and soothing...

Roman empire - one of the greatest empires in history :-0
Gavin C. Nope
So where are the people who are worth it after stalking and wasting half your life for a decade you dont know at?
Largest, maybe, not the greatest. It fell due to lead poisoning and corruption. They collected their urine in jars and washed their clothes in it. I think we've grown to do better.
@@kermitthefrog3685 he never said greatest but one of. Learn to read and yes, he's right.
I think it's pretty cool to see the depiction of muscular women training (at the beginning) Must have been some sort of gym?
Definitely a gym
Ok thanks for your input!
Good eye! Those images were of women competing in sporting activities. Many of the colorful pieces depict a range of scenes of life both on and off the estate.
Fourth century ladieswear seems remarkably similar to today's.

Just saw this today. The video didn’t do it justice.
Hola
here from apec schools
Good luck getting them to redo your bathroom.
Instead of writing on the video it is better if the voice appears
who ever put this video together needs a lesson in positioning. when you are showing mosaic floors, don't put your oh so important explanation over them, use the space where there are no mosaics to marvel at, like up on the adobe walls and in screen killing sun drenched doorways.
Slackers are now in control, good enough is job done
You took my comment right off my fingertips

It be really nice to be able to read the description text. Your i-card text covers not 1, not 2, but 3 lines on the far right side. Please take this into concideration for upcoming videos.
All i see on the first description is ...This luxurious estat......Sicilian countryside d......to the late Roman em.......
I can guess what the lines are supposed to be saying....but i try to not assume things, especially the written/typed word.
Move over France... there is a new honeymoon spot in town.
They downloaded that stuff from the Web.
Is it forbidden to enter that site? or we have to put off our shoe or sandals?
People dissing Medieval art for being primitive, it looks exactly like Roman art.
Did you see some blond? Were Roman blond or not?
Some were some weren't
There was no such thing as a "Roman". The empire was called "Roman Empire" because its capital was Rome. Its people came from many different regions of the world, be it from slavery (Africa, Asia) or joining the Empire (Eastern Europe, Northern Europe to some extend). Everyone could be a roman if they followed the Empires laws, paid taxes and contributed.
DerSchmiedJ Your dream sounds really good.
Left anti pc the fact that the Roman Empire's northern boarders ended in middle Germany contributed to the fact that there werde not many blonde "Romans". Blonde Hair and blue eyes are "trademark" of "northern" People. They joined the Empire too and mixed with the south European people, but in lesser numbers (mostly skilled workers wanting to improve their Livingstandards in the more "advanced" Roman Empire.
Blond, brown, black, even red.
Ai copy better than original let them compare the past to the new and find same
Dated?
Evil
lol
No doubt, created by slaves
Charla Gotier their empire was evil. Most are actually. That’s why I celebrate slave revolts throughout history, even if they end in death. Spartacus was a gladiator slave to the Romans that led an uprising that bought the nation to its knees.
Right. The leaders took labor instead of tax money and since most people were farmers in the ancient world, they had a lot of free time in the off season.
I want to add that slavery has to be seen in context to the era and was essential for getting humankind forward, I do not want to judge about it.
LagiNaLangAko23 there is always a troll... don’t feed the trolls... miserable people who need to low rate others or downplay their (perceived ethnic group’s) human atrocities with rhetoric about being superior/ entitled. I never read in full or respond to idiots.
im gonna have to call into question the authenticity of some of the tiles. they didnt have bikinis
in roman times.
