In episode 2 of Cyprus, Uncharted, we go into the last divided city in Europe and the last divided capital on earth: Nicosia where a thick green line cuts the city in half. I talk to the people who live with this division every day to better understand how it feels life on a divided island.

Watching this as im currently waiting on my flight out of Ercan airport in northen cyprus. After 2 weeks on this island and walking across this 'border' multiple times in the lasf 2 days i have to say johnny got the feeling and phrasing exactly right. The two sides are so different and the buffer zone is a hard line. In the city its clearly visible from so many streets that suddenly turn into a dead end, and during my hikes in the troodos mountains you can visibly see the buffer zone as a empty wasteland.
Crazy interesting place to visit, with mosques built in old catcholic churches, mixed cultures but such friendly people on both sides.

I can't recognize who is Greek and who is Turkish for just looking at their faces, even culturally there is no big difference between them. 00:32 only the greek cypriots correct you about the borders because they still have the illusion of having the whole island to themselves by denying the Turkish part's presence. Unrecognition doesnt make an entity disappear. There are Turkish Cypriots who live on the North and Greek Cypirots on the South Side of this island and they have their own government, different legislations and instutions. Northern Cyprus is neither Turkey nor Greek Cypriot part and this will continue for much much longer time like this unless The Greek Side accepts the Turkish part and sits to the table with equal sovereign rights.

As a Turk, although I find this documentary a bit biased, I liked it very much. I understand that people have prejudices in these situations. But I think that the views of the Turkish side should also be given some space. While showing people/lives/emotions on the Greek side, showing only the flags/soldiers/ruins for the Turkish side reduces the quality of the documentary. This attitude creates more prejudices on an already complicated situation. I hope this biased attitude that caught my attention in the first two episodes is only a cinematic technique developed by the director for audience retention. And we might see a slightly more neutral cinematography in the next episodes.
Small info: Although the Greek side said that this island is not divided, we can live together with the Turks, as in the past, in the referendum held in 2004, the Greek side rejected the unification with an overwhelming 75% of the vote. So, 3 out of every 4 people we see in the video do not want to live on the same island with the Turks.

There's a lot to be questioned you have told a story from the Greek side half baked end of story. Unless there's a part 3 then this will definitely curb your access to other conflicts because if you don't cover them equally and just tell a simple story The tale of two cities then this could be among the last great opportunity you have to be fair and balanced which you did not do maybe you're just blocked by your own bias and the stuff you have because you don't have a diverse staff looking challenging you and give you different perspectives fortunate

I agree with Greek cypriots, don't call them border. When you say "border " it means an official boundary where one country's sovereign area ends and other country's begins.
But in this case, UN specifically said that it's a cease fire line. It's different. Same way with India-pakistan in kashmir. It's called the LoC (line of control), it's not a border, it's a cease fire line where the two parties paused the war that was happening, agreed to hold positions as it is. But it doesn't mean that one party has accepted to officially give up their land that was occupied by the other party in that war or insurgency. It means that they will negotiate on it- maybe soon, maybe over 100 years, depends on the politics.
Now, since the occupied land is with the aggressors and they refuse to give it back and since the country which it originally belonged to (and still belongs officially) cannot govern it, it is but natural that that area will run a parallel govt.
This doesn't mean that the official borders have been drawn and agreed upon. If you call a line of control or cease fire line a border, you are insinuating that you consider the illegal annexation as legit and you are giving it a recognition. And being insensitive towards the massacre and people's loss.
So yeah I understand their sentiments.

Greeks and Turks didn't live side by side in harmony, that's just the picture Turks and British like to portray. In reality, Ottoman rule saw Turks go to many regions of Greece and colonize them, brutally oppressing the local Greeks. During British rule, the British supported the Turkish minority to control the Greeks and the island. Divide and conquer. But the British and Turks want to show that "oh wow the communities were peaceful until the bad Greeks came and created intercommunal violence" and what not.
Hundreds of years of subjugation and mistreatment is what the Greeks faced, ever since 1204 and the "Division of Romania"

Actually, Cyprus was quite a complicated case. The Turkish Cypriots in some ways were not entirely cared for by the ottomans.
In fact, the ottomans sent their pashas usually supported by christian dragomans to collect taxes from the Greeka and Turkish communities and with the support of the Greek Orthodox church who was the main authority on behalf of the sultan.
This tax was crushing for both Greek and Turkish Cypriots, and led to an uprising in the 1800s called the Gavur Imam rebellion (Gavur Iman insyani) where both Greek and Turkish Cypriot took up arms against the oppressive pasha and his cristian administration. The uprising was condemned by the Greek Orthodox church in Cyprus at the time.
A folk song of the time describes this.

Acho que falta muita historia modrrna nas aulas de história. Tirando as grandes guerras, mundiais, e algumas americanas.

This is a 16 minutes long video about Cyprus which includes only 25 SECONDS of a Turkish Cypriot speaking between 12:55 - 13:20 ...
