The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Should have had their own variety show , they were so versatile
First time I've seen this one! Very cute, and funny. Elaine is full of cheekiness and loving it!!
When you were on Ed Sullivan, you knew you hit the big time.
Yes. True.
But you also had to know how to cooperate or you would never be allowed to play on the show again.
I think Ed Sullivan was very strict at that.
I LOVE THEM!! THIS SONG A FAVORITE !! SPANKY, WE LOVE YOU!! You're adorable and I LOVE your voice°
Crazy I love all kinds of music except rap. I can’t deal with rap, but Spanky’s been in my heart since I was a baby and I’m almost 74 and 66.
These were real musicians who played live no special effects and great harmony .And they added humor to their act. Yes Malcom Hale's death 10/30/1968 led to the end of the group .He was lead Guitarist and vocal arranger .Elaine ( Spanky) had a very powerful voice. This is the group in 1967 with Oz Bach on bass . He would leave in late 1967 and be replaced by Lefty Baker Guitar and Kenny Hodges on the Bass. The group only recorded 3 albums . Had Malcom lived I believe they would have had a far greater footprint on music from that Golden era of REAL Music.
Who was the guy with the hat
@@2ndarmoredhellonwheels106 Nigel Pickering Rhythm Guitar and high harmony. He would later join Elaine in a later version of the group in the early 70s. He was the only original member besides her to be in the reincarnation of Spank and our gang. No commercial success and a totally different sound. The members on this video our the original lineup.
@@alkitzman9179 cool thanks

@@2ndarmoredhellonwheels106 John Seiter who later drummed for the Turtles
That was a cool song. Love Spanky.
They played at the Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival, june 10-11, 1967. There were several bands: The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds, The 5th Dimension, Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band, Steve Miller Blues Band, and many others. It's a shame organizers didn't record it.
Nice! This was the same appearance when they performed "Sunday Will Never Be The Same"
This group was so talented
They were an incredible versatile rock group that was beyond talented and had many tragedies or they would have been even more famous and probably would have been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame !!!!!
I was only 6 when they were popular. But I do like music from that era.
I had older sisters that were into the music and became familiar with 60s music.
A band with a sense of humor! Check out a humorous song they recorded called "My Bill." A personal favorite.
Group leader Malcolm Hale, on the right, died the next year and that pretty much ended the group. Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane later toured as Cass Elliot's replacement in "The New Mamas and the Papas" in the 1980s. "Sunday Will Never Be the Same", "Lazy Day" and "Like to Get to Know You" were memorable hits and arrangements.
Malcolm died waaaaaaaay too soon. So talented.
They performed all 3 of these songs on Ed Sullivan. I hope they post all 3
Yeah Malcolm did their arrangements, I remember spanky saying he was the glue that held it together
Reportedly, he died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty space heater.
Someone who is the leader of the band and in charge of all the arrangements dies suddenly and unexpectedly leading to break up really sucks.
They were pals with the "Mamas & Papas"
So delightfully silly! i LOVE this band.
Elaine is very funny and attractive here!
It’s great to see that a washboard was played on the Ed Sullivan Show!
This was one day after my 18th Birthday. Holy crap!
I was 8. We watched ed Sullivan every week. Sure wish we could go back to those times
The group grew out of the Sixties folk boom, which had its share of comedy novelty numbers. But, I admit, a little of this goes a long way. Similar to this is the group's "Leopard Skin Phones", which they did on the Smothers Brothers show. It's also on UA-cam.
Elaine was short, chubby, and funny. A natural comedienne, with a good voice.
Forgot to mention sexy 😂
And cute !!
Elaine going back to her roots on washboard. What a phenomenal band they were. Reminds me of Frankie Vallis band in the 70s with Don Ciconne, Polci, Shapiro, and Frank himself. All those guys fantastic singers. And phenomenal players. A special band with perfect musical chemistry. Just like Spanky and her gang. Both didn’t last long enough. Both had a few cool incarnations at least.
This was something left off the first official S&OG album. At this point, the group could lean toward the "novelty" end of things, but that wouldn't last. Also, it would be shortly before Oz left the group. By the time the 2nd and 3rd albums came out they would go through several changes.
this is really the kind of music they liked, especially Elaine
Is that thing the equivalent to a tambourine? Lol cute.
uh...no. it's a washboard.
It's a washboard that's common in backwoods bluegrass type music music. but in a sense you're right because tambourine often takes a place of other percussion and in this case so does the washboard
@@withgoddess7164 right lol. I'm being silly. Because I'm a black guy lol. You know..into more r&b and things like that. I like to listen to other things because it keeps me open minded. And I loved this performance and its sound. My favorite part was the way they played with ygeit harmonies at the end. I just loved that.
This is a Hoagy Carmichael song, the man who wrote Stardust and Georgia on my Mind.
Wow!
Spanky
Oz Bach later left the group.
How about Sunday Morning and Three Ways From Tomorrow next?
What does Elaine say at 1:32?
How come these men were in their 20's but looked in their 40's?
Nigel Pickering was almost 38, but yeah
@@pmsfar-outgrooviness8025 Ah ok! 38 at the time makes more sense but he still looked older than healthy 37-year old in 2021.
@@Laughandsong people looked older in those days
I don't think that was planned at 0:59 ...
sevvunth
Whats a BVD?
underwear
white American women always have something glamorous
Women back in the days were like that. Can't say anything about them now.
@@rwboa22 They were much more attractive than now, which are all covered in tattoos and piercings.
Who is the guitar player banana playing Person? Its not Lefty
Paul "Oz" Bach. He left the group thereafter.
It's called a Kazoo!
Elaine can wash clothes okay
CHIEF!!!!
The banana kazoo isn't a great look.
Could have done without this song, way below this great group.
This band is more of a clown show than anything else
Not quite
Hey!....You are so wrong....
They got pretty serious with "Give A D-mn", which attracted some controversy at the time.
Not so at all.....very skilled and talented.
Didn't know this band has a sinse of humor
