    I have a redshift stem. Love it. You notice it for the first 5 minutes of riding moving if you were on a different fixed stem. But it smooths out the ride and reduces hand fatigue. Good product if it setup correctly, which includes adjusting the bar angle in relation to the stem flex. Nice review!

    Red Shift tilts the bars forward.

    I like my Redshift stem. I run it with a stiffer than recommend elastomer combo so that it damps vibration and smoothes out the sharpest hits without bobbing under normal power. The only time I notice any bobbing is out of the saddle on the steepest hills.
    You're probably more sensitive and attuned than me, though 😆

      Mine's setup as per their spec and I really have to push down on the bars to notice any bobbing when out of the saddle, in normal operation I can't tell it's there... until I hit that bump!

    I have a basic 1st gen BMC urs, never had much chance to ride on extreme gravel/mud but the mtt is great for rough roads & pot holes, been loving it despite it’s shortfalls but keen to put on a red shift stem one day. Although I need to find tougher gravel routes test its full potential, I can positively say I still love that thing, comfort is good for amateur riders on regular gravel routes & rough roads.

    • @keirfarnum6811
      @keirfarnum6811 3 місяці тому +1

      Yeah. Throw some narrow tires and drop bars on a good XC bike (maybe a different stem too), and you have a decent “gravel” bike. Maybe use something with a double chainring and derailleur up front for some extra top end gear.
      When I raced XC in Alaska during the early 90s, some of our races were essentially gravel races, and there’s no way I would ride a gravel bike on those roads. The washboard was BRUTAL; hit that stuff and all the momentum and speed immediately went away. It was worse than quicksand. Sometimes an actual mountain bike makes more sense.

    • @teqai

      You don‘t need an MTB for easy singletrack and a gravel bike is way more fun on asphalt. Riding on asphalt feels like a waste of time on an MTB in comparison.

    I thought the RedShift stem's movement would bother me but I don't even notice it and love the simplicity vs the other suspension gizmos.
    Contrary to you (and most?) I ride my e-gravel bikes trying to use the LEAST amount of motor/battery assist rather than the most so the "range anxiety" so many of you fret over isn't there for me. On most of my rides the ""range" indicator actually goes UP, not down! Does BMC market theirs as some sort of e-MX machine that you have to pedal vs a bicycle with e-assist for when things get too steep or you get too tired? That's what mine are for: don't worry, just get out there and RIDE with a battery/motor that'll save the day if you choose a ride too steep or too long. TBH until the road tilts up more than a little bit I don't even notice the extra weight...and when/if I do on a climb I just hit the assist button and it's gone! I will admit to rarely riding on the type of trails your video showed..IMHO MTB would be a better choice on the ride you took!

    Have you ever changed out the elastomers on Redshift stems? You might like the trade off better with a stiffer combo. I was worried about not liking the pivot and set mine up (too) hard at first. No twist bob. Also not much softening. Took it a bit softer and love it.

    I do see gravel bikes trending toward the soft tail or elastomer rear to help with the chatter, like this BMC. But for the price I would opt for something you could custom build, like the LightCarbon Gravel Frameset with micro supsension system for better bang for buck!

    The rear MTT is stated by BMC as beng 10mm of cush. Watching the video gave me the impression that it is 20mm.
    I imagine the rear MTT design restricts the ultimate max tyre clearance, as you commented with your calves occasionally rubbing the MTT's 'shoulder' corners.

    I just dont get complicated suspension systems in Gravelbikes. If 47mm of tire clearance with low tire pressure arent enough get yourself a Rockshox Rudy. For every more technical terrain I will always prefer a Mountainbike. All of these suspension systems are in my opinion more of a marketing move of the big brands than really helping the end consumer. Especially because they are a true nightmare to work on.

    • @jaschprrr1154
      @jaschprrr1154 3 місяці тому

      @@kubagornowicz I also dont want to ride big fat tires with low pressure all the time. But if i want to ride fast tires with high pressure, i dont want a flexing stem or seatstays. In that case I want a stiff and fast bike. What i want to say: I am not a big fan of these compromises and these very specific "solutions" which are just practical for one specific situation and in all the other situations they kind of suck.

    • @siy01
      @siy01 3 місяці тому +1

      @jaschprrr1154 Have you even tried the Redshift stem or seatpost? Because this reads like a view based on an assumption. With the right suspension level set( stiffer elastomers) neither is bouncy or flexy. They absorb more of the bumps and chatter from a gravel road or trail, but add only around 100-150grams over a normal seatpost or stem, and require next to nothing in maintenance. I run both with 45mm Terenno Dry's the smoothness of the ride is noticeably improved, without affecting how the bike handles.

    • @jaschprrr1154
      @jaschprrr1154 3 місяці тому +1

      @@siy01 First of all I want to mention that I like the redshift stem and seatpost. I think they are consumer friendly options and dont make everything more complicated like headset suspension systems etc.
      I personally just dont use the redshift items, because I use my gravelbike as an allrounder with two wheelsets. When im in the forest on big chunky gravel roads I would sometimes like an extra bit of suspension. But on my roadrides I really dont want my stem to flex while riding. Most of the times I anyways do the rough gravel with my mountainbike and mixed terrain/road rides with my gravelbike. For me thats the best solution.

  • @hardmtnbiker
    @hardmtnbiker 3 місяці тому +3

    Coming from years of riding rigid mountain bikes, I think of RedShift or any Cane Creek mods, as a way to use a gravel bike on the fringes of a fat tire mountain bike. Sure my hands would get beat up leaning on my hoods on a chunky descent and my back gets jarred on a rough trail but I’m not opposed to run 700x45 or perhaps try 29x2.2” tires. I already use Cushcore gravel and just started using Tannus lite inserts. Personally I think it’s a balance between a slower rolling tire combo or some purpose built components or frame design that makes it easier for whatever trails you spend most of your time riding.

    ATTENTION: Most of all, make sure you know how much servcing these suspension systems require and if you're willing and able to do that. I got a BMC teamelite with mtt travel, the mtt needs a lot of servicing that only a bmc shop can do. And they want money! Parts are also hard to get. Sadly, the frame now is buried in my basement. There should be a huge sticker on the frame announcing the servicing requirements when you purchase the bike. Well there wasn't and the bmc dealer didn't tell me neither. Alas, the bike was a waste of money.

    Bar moving is a common and scary issue I have with my URS 01 23. Only had it with the Easton handlebar. With the ENVE SES no issues. Carbon paste is the solution. Hope they changed the bolts from the steam that were facing the bike , very difficult and annoying to torque.

    Also should be noted you can get a suspension stem from Vecnum that does not cause the handlebars to tilt down during load. A bit more expensive than Redshift, but way less than a 12k$ bike or a suspension fork. I own both the Vecnum and a Rockshox Rudy suspension fork and I prefer the suspension fork though.
    BMC putting Redshift on their 12k$ bike instead of a Vecnum does not reflect well on them, tbh.

    Are they still sticking with pressfit? I've heard one of mechs in my bike shop complaining about it, and I also don't want to sweat about BB when having to do service by myself. Even the Cannondale went to BSA68...
    For that reason, only the ebike seems noteworthy because it has motor bracket instead.
    Interesting headshock-like suspension, but how good is the serviceability with that one? Specialized is selling parts for their futureshock online but not aure how bmc does.

    • @brandonhoffman4712
      @brandonhoffman4712 3 місяці тому +1

      Pressfit is better as long as you can keep the quality control in check on manufacturing and have a mechanic that knows what they are doing. Or better yet, become your own mechanic and put the money saved into an enduro stainless bottom bracket with stainless bearings.
      No matter what bottom bracket system you have there should be good stainless bearings from enduro which come with a lifetime warranty as long as they are serviced once a year. You can probably even swap just the bearings for $35 plush shipping. You can buy ceramic stainless too, but thats expensive...
      But ya everything I've been seeing says pressfit is better. The reason the industry changed is because manufacturers were having dificulty manufacturing to the required tolerances, and not all mechanics were adept at fixing a carbon bottom bracket. So manufacturers began fitting a threaded hub body into the frame during the manufacturing process to alleviate the situation completley. Some brands have remained faithful to press fit as they can keep their quality control high enough to create good pressfit models.
      Also most press fit bottom brackets are now threaded, or one piece. Which both solve many issues.

I think the redshift stem would be a no go for me. It’s gimmicky! I looked at the Cane Creek suspension fork at Steamboat. It’s very interesting as a front suspension solution for gravel.
