Success NOT Guaranteed - Adapting C Mount Lenses to M4/3 Micro Four Thirds

  • Adapting C mount lenses to M4/3 doesn't always work out. In addition to cine lenses, the C mount was also used for television, cctv, and industrial machine vision lenses. As a result there are several things that can prevent a lens from being able to be adapted to micro four thirds.

I had a Canon 25mm F0.78 c-mount lens. I modified it for micro four thirds, and the rear element went all the way into the chamber of my Olympus camera, right up to the shutter. It still wasn't enough to reach infinity with that lens. I used it for portraits only. It also did not damage the camera, even though touching the shutter curtain affected the speed of it closing. That lens was a rare exception. Over the years, I've modified many c-mount lenses. The best is to replace the c-mount with a native mount, even if it requires more work. For some lenses, it is absolutely needed. I have a 25mm F0.85 lens that has a rear element almost exactly as wide as the mount for micro four thirds. I wouldn't have been able to use it without drilling a new mount onto that lens.

A long time ago I picked up the Cherry wide-angle and telephoto lenses and I was trying to see if it would be worth it to adapt them onto my Canon DSLR. I'll pick up an adapter and give it a shot! Thanks for being one of the few people putting out a video about this!

I have a camera with Nikon F mount (46.5 mm focal flange distance) and I want to use the Computar 55 mm f/2.8 (FFD of 17.526 mm) with it. Considering that I'm not trying to focus to infinity anyway, could this be possible? I've seen you use it but I think it was on a mirrorless 4/3 camera

Hi. I just got a used pentax cosmicar 8-48mm C mount lens and c-m4/3 adaper. I can put the adapter on my bmmcc, but I can't equip my pentax lens to the adpater like 0:32. Could you let me know the way I can put my lens on the adapter? Thank you for uploading a good video.

You need to grind down the metal. That zoom is really only for the Pentazx Q QS etc. ETC mode on m4/3 of course...

The Nikon 1 Series cameras are 1 inch sensors and suit the TV lenses, in c mount. Cine lenses 16mm were really only 2/3 inch sensor lenses, S 16 in between 2/3 and 3/3 inch.
You are correct about the APS sensors. 6/3 inches they are usually too large for C mounts but some 35mm many 50mm and nearly all fast 75mm will fully cover....
    Don't give up!

Hello. Is there a follow up video of this attempt?

A macro tube will solve the counter sinking issue but will effect the focal distance. The upside to this is that if you're a macro photographer you have a lot of room to experiment with adapting c-mount lenses.

i recently passed on a thrift store find of a computar 8mm 1.3 tv lens because i read the same thing about it possibly damaging you camera. i have a sony 5n i wanted to play with but didnt think $5 was worth the risk of damaging the sensor. i read something about the wider the lens the more likely it will hit the sensor but im not sure.

My guess is that the smaller the intended video format, the more likely the rear element will be a problem. A 1/3" CCD sensor doesn't require a lens to be very far away to get full coverage.
You could have sold the lens for $25-$30 on eBay. After fees and shipping you would have netted $12-$17. That's almost enough for a cheap Chinese cctv lens.

I'm actually glad I watched this video for this exact reason, I wasn't aware of this particular concern with adapting c-mount lenses. As I mention above however a macro tube or two would solve this issue, but result in a macro only lens, which for $5 I would be fine with just to play around with.

that 35mm is impressive. I got one for my gh4. Are there any adapters these lenses to fit on my canon cameras, that are non mirrorless ?

Hi, thank you for the information. Can you tell us what are the lenses you show on the video also the favorite ones? Looking a wide-angle solution of BMPCC OG.

The weak point of small sensor cameras is the ultra wide angle. This particular lens will provide much better quality results to sensors that are larger than in the gopro type cams and leave gopro for dead.
Since it successfully covers the GH4 sensor in video mode, it covers more than the advertised 1 inch sensor. The crop factor on the GH4 in video mode is 2.3x, not 2x, as in still 4:3 mode on most m4/3 sensors.

Hi, I bought a vintage cine lens. Mount diameter is 16 mm. I do'nt know what type of mount it is. Its not C mount. I have C-EOS M adapter which does not fit on it. I guess I may require a special step up ring on which I could use C-EOS M adapter to use it on my Canon mirrorless camera. Your expertise would be highly appreciated. The lens was by mistake described as C mount. 1.5 INCH f1.9 SUPER COMAT TAYLOR AND HOBSON Lens ? MOUNT 16mm Movie lens. Do you have any adapters 1. which can adapt this lens to my Canon EOS M?2. Is there any D mount Cine lens to C adapter? Thanks for your expert opinion.

Could be a D mount. You can get D mount to C mount adaptors, but they're not cheap.
