Mr. Trevino has my utmost respect. One is never too old to learn, and his aspirational spirit has inspired me to keep learning.
I used to tutor people in reading, and it’s one of the most rewarding things I ever did. I’m changing careers to work with addiction sufferers, and I will sure tutor clients, if they let me. I’d love to set up a reading and other educational tutoring program in a long term treatment or transitional sober housing.
Have them start with Houston's illiterate teachers!

illiterate and driving? explains so much bad driving. My son was reading at age4, went to Alief district for K, was told he really didn't know how to read until he did worksheets perfectly. Was in Pasadena district briefly where focus was on answering worksheet over and over until it was perfect, memorized multiplication tables, understanding what algebra is, reading above grade level was discouraged and kid became suicidal at age 7. When pulled him out the last book the teacher let him read was "good night moon" when 3 mos prior he was reading "Little House " series at home. Tx schools are a train wreck in every way.
american schools are like jobs, if ur not feeling it, ur dumb or not normal. i was in speech class in elementary school when i was talking in full sentences since like age 2, but because i was from NYC i would pronounce words in a hard accent like "DA CLASSRUM" or "Dont Axe Me". remember its also all about cash, they make more money putting ur kids into these programs. the number 1 answer to almost all problems is discipline and alternative learning methods

I wonder if English illiteracy is more common as opposed to other languages because of our difficult spelling? In Spanish there’s almost no difficulty whatsoever in spelling. Each spoken word can be perfectly and effortlessly spelled.
It has nothing to do with English as a language.
It's the crooked politicians.
The US education and healthcare system is not designed to make you healthy or educated.
It's designed to form you into someone who blindly follows the orders the two political parties give you.
That why it's not designed to give you the best education, but to funnel as many people thru is as possible.
Because more people means more money for the schools. It doesn't matter if you can read or not.
It only matters that you are there. Because every student creates an income for the school.
Same applies to the healthcare system.
It's not designed to make you healthy. It's designed to keep you dependent on on, by making you sick. To funnel more money to someone.
And highly educated people would realize this and start asking questions. So you have to keep them dumb in order to keep them poor.
1. Keep them dumb
2. They won't know enough to get a high paying job. So they will stay poor.
3. Tell those people that only YOUR political party knows all the answers for their problems
4. Unable to differentiate between lie and truth they will elect people that decide something against their own interest.
5. The next generation will also become dumb and elect the same politicians
6. The People become poorer and poorer while the rich become richer and richer.
7. Without proper knowledge nobody will not notice what is really goin on, despite the fact that the people see more and more people are homeless while more and more people become billionaires. Because THEIR political party tells them the whole time it's just the fault of the other political party.

Even College educated students can not understand spoken english and speak at all(deaf and dumb).
But you understand and speak English well. It's not too late to learn reading. In here, Even english teacher don't speak well and understand as much as you.

There is thing called Google and the internet that can also answer questions you have instead of asking random strangers. There's a ton of sources that may be more reliable than just hearsay too. Just saying. It's quite amazing the things that can be researched online besides just using the comments...

Counter in the same situation but I get actually read and I did draft out until I was in high school still don’t know how to do math English is not what I thought it is math is not what I thought it was. Everything is not what I thought it was it was hard I still don’t have my GED.

How can dropping out at 5th grade leave someone completely illiterate? I was reading chapter books when I was in 5th grade. I remember reading Harry Potter books in middle school. I don’t remember my parents ever helping me with reading or homework. Though I am white, and did live in a white suburb, where access to school transportation and food at home never stunted my schooling. just getting through school with passing grades, four years of Spanish in high school, and doing all my school work was evidently enough to ensure great literacy upon graduation. And reading books and living my adult life has continued my high literacy.
If someone feels the need to drop out of school during the fifth grade, they probably did not learn ANYWHERE near as much as the average fifth grader did. Usually, they are already struggling, they don't see the value of school and they drop out when they feel like they need to. He probably had the reading level of a first grader, when he dropped out. Then, if you do not practice reading and writing, those skills WILL atrophe and you will be even worse than before.
Also, if your parents let you go to school undisturbed, let you do your homework, bought you books and pencils, gave you a quiet space to work, etc, they helped you more than many parents of illiterate people helped them.
@@iandrsaurri625 not to sound racist, but the few black people I’ve befriended and shared text messages with showed me what black illiteracy may look like. I remember having to literally struggle to translate their broken Ebonics they texted in, into English. Here’s an example of what it looked like when a barely literate black person would text me: “Wut u need 2mrrow I be chillin do in need of moore of dat stuff u bing cus of lass tyme”
@@iandrsaurri625 there were a few black people I texted messaged with in the past, and it was near impossible to read their broken grammar, and every word they typed they condensed down to a few letters. (U no I gt ntn atm so will u met me 2mrrw ok) is literally how all of their text messages looked.

But that’s not everyone’s story and that’s not everyone’s life. Clearly, his circumstances were different than yours. Having the ability to be self-aware in realizing that you were afforded blessings and opportunities that others weren’t given, takes you a long way in life. Also, your comment in the replies about how your Black friends struggle to text sentences you understand and your assumption that Black people overall is illiterate, is extremely racist. You told on yourself when you mentioned “the FEW Black people you’ve befriended”, as if you’re somehow a prize and as if being your friend is even worth anyone’s time. If you see that someone is struggling with literacy, it’s okay to exude compassion and empathy, rather than being critical. Your lack of self-awareness, the way you’re so judgmental toward things that you can’t personally understand or relate to instead of showcasing compassion, and your blatant ignorance and racism is astounding. If my son behaved like you, then I failed as a mother. You’re honestly not a good person at all, and you really should be ashamed of yourself.
My guess is that if he was working at 10 or 11, he was not doing a job that would involve reading skills. If his parents probably could not read either. As a result, he lost his few reading skills along the way.

This is the saddest thing I have ever seen. It’s shocking until you remember that reading is something that you learn even through your teens and adulthood. You learn baby books then chapter books then children’s novels and young adult novels before moving onto adult novels in your teen years. I learned to read even into my late teens and adulthood because although I was an early reader, I read a lot of YA and children’s books into my teens. I was challenged to read adult novels in high school- some of which went over my head at the time. Reading has always been a great love of mine and I try to make reading a daily habit even today. But I might not have progressed as quickly if I hadn’t been assigned college-level reading material in my teens. It is amazing how much reading really is a habit and a skill that is built over time even into your adulthood. In college I read a lot more material out of academic journals by professors or professionals in their field. Today there is probably certain types of technical writing or medical writing that would be too advanced for me.

I know very many adults who are illiterate and it's mostly their own fault. Dropping out of school to provide for a family is one thing. Flat out refusing to do the work teachers giving you is another.

It's easy to judge from a glance, but everyone is struggling with a boatload of issues you know nothing about. When you fall SO behind, it can be impossible to do the work anymore. This started happening to me in elementary school and followed me through my k-12 education. It would turn out that I had undiagnosed autism/developmental delay. I didn't find out till 17, and by then it was too late. I had to drop out and find my own path.

That’s not true. Everyone can learn at any age. Some will find it harder though, yes. He’s likely dyslexic or has some other kind of learning disorder. When he was in school, there was no support for disabilities, and so he fell behind. He’s clearly quite a smart man; just needs extra support to read which he never had until now.
And it’s everything to do with schools. Some students need more support, from school.
It has everything to do with the low quality "ejamakashun" kids get in the "publik skul sistim." For one thing, schools should get back to TEACHING, rather than indoctrinating.
