And they super-nerfed both Reed and Sue because they wanted to make the Lizard a bigger threat. Even then, there were better characters from Spider-Man's rogues gallery to pick from for this story, like Electro, Vulture or Green Goblin who have a better arsenal than Lizard

one of the aspects i like about this story is how “nice” the symbionte was to ben grimm, it really readjusted ben's body to be that of a normal, human it was not an ilusión it really did alter his form to be like his original pre cosmic rays exposure one but then the the lizards actions made the simbionte and Ben hateful and ended up being tainted by hatred once again because the lizard forcefully stole it and bonded with it and he payed for this betrayal with his life i firmly believe if this universe venom stayed bonded to the thing&benn did not trusted the lizard the symbionte would be come better permanently like the agent venom from earth 616
i think thats one of the parts about symbiotes i love the best is they are both apart of the host and their own personality, so anything malicious nor also helpful is also apart of the human host just as much as the symbiote. another example of this is in a game called grim dawn. the aetherials fit this role perfectly. the aetherials sought to escape the void between the world and inhabit the physical realm once again, and planned to take over leaders of humans to be able to carve out a place for themselves, but because the humans they took over often were many shades of brutal, greedy, or worse, it made the war much more brutal and genocidal than the aetherials had intially intended. there are aetherials who fight against their own kind as they inhabited bodies that weren't so crazy.
Hey, he kinda does have the appearance of an elderly person with such a permanently overwhelming and endless amount of cracks and wrinkles that not one part of him is smooth or particularly pleasant to look at. I guess he is the furthest thing from youthfulness.

Is also worth noting that this “What If” story took place around the time Ben was supposed to flee to Monster Island in the 616, during the anniversary where the Fantastic Four all got their powers.
The only reason Ben has never been permanently cured is because of some sort of contract for his character where every writer/artist isn't allowed to permanently do so. He's also not allowed to change easily like the human torch.
This is what is would call grimdark. Great story but in the end its really just sad. I love these type of stories because they make you feel something. Throught the story there are ups and downs and though at the end you might not feel happy but you feel satisfied with the story. Its like when you cry at an intese seen at a movie but the emotion makes everything memoerable and enjoyable.
Something that's always bothered me with Grimm is how they play up how ugly he is, how he desperately wants to be his regular handsome self. Show of hands people, is there anyone out there who actually thinks Ben Grimm is ugly? He's like an adorable pet rock dipped in cornflakes. There was this period where he was smooth and lumpy instead of rocky, and he looked like he had the worst allergic reaction to shellfish ever. (Which he didn't because I am pretty sure he's not allowed to eat shellfish.) In that scenario, okay, maybe he was a bit on the...huckery side. But regular old psoriasis-cliff Grimm looks kinda cute.
Pretty weird how the lizard was able to bite through reed's flesh, kinda always thought he was more durable than that. Maybe this is just a weaker version of Reed? Oh well, comics do be like that sometimes

Doom found multiple ways to turn Ben back, he just doesnt do it unless Reeds admits that Doom is superior to him. It's a battle of stubborness and humility and the one who needs to become humble is weirdly the guy with the flexible powers. Somebody found a way to cure your friend from an illness nobody else has the cur off and is willing to help you, and all you need to do is say that he's smarter then you on live tv. I'd be saying that a pile of decaying food was smarter then me for a free cure to save my best friend in a heartbeat
I am new to your channel and have only seen three videos so far. I have to say you made a lifetime fan out of me with your dark sense of humor and your content being some of the best and craziest comics that I have not even heard of after no longer collecting comics. This one in particular stood out because I have always been a fan of the more tragic hero’s in Marvel Hulk being my favorite with The Thing coming up a very close second. This What If was stunning in both staying close to the dark undertones I grew up with and the absolutely amazing art contained in this issue. Thank you for this.

Venom had it because kinda mocking/mimicking Spidey.. but Thing and Lizard aren't using the symbiote to do that.. so they have no reason to have a spider insignia lol

This story is kinda weird... 1) The Lizard is very much out of character here. You could say that the symbiote was influencing it, and they hint at there being a lot of break-in attempts since it arrived... But Venom being able to entice a large number of people while trapped behind a tube is not really something it's been shown to do. It can sometimes tempt one person in close proximity. But not only is Lizard in full-on evil mode here, but apparently was also able to use Connors' scientific ability as well? Secret Wars era Lizard is... well... dumb. REALLY dumb. During Secret Wars, Wasp defeats him by being nice to him. 2) It's a Fantastic Four story wherein the member who instantly stops the threat is conspicuous by his absence. For the first time in his existence, I found myself wishing Johnny Storm was there. You'd think Reed might make a call with the break-in attempts, and having studied the symbiote enough to know it's weak to sonics... but apparently missing fire? 3) A newly bonded Venom-Lizard not only breaks into the Baxter Building effortlessly; but defeats Reed and Sue? I'm sorry, even shortly after Secret War where Sue is often a damsel in distress; Sue puts a bubble in Connors' head and pops him like a zit. She certainly doesn't just get one shotted after some off-panel tussling. Given what Reed has survived, he certainly just doesn't get chewed like a piece of taffy. Reed Richards can tank hits from the Thing. He's survived being slashed by Wolverine and Daken by stretching to accommodate. Doom has trouble stretching Reed to the point where his elasticity doesn't save him, WHILE FREEZING him. But apparently the secret was a laffy taffy stretch, and lizard teeth. This story could work, just not with Curt Connors suddenly deciding that Reed Richards must die. The problem here is that they need a villain that can beat Reed and Sue, but somehow lose to Ben. (especially once the symbiote jumps ship) The Four have a pretty rich rogue's gallery of unstable minds that might have worked better here: Diablo. (The Wingless) Wizard. Super-Skrull. People who actually hate Reed.
To add onto the last part and hopefully answer your question there, another comment said that "Lizard isn’t really random to the story , man just held a grudge in secret wars and wanted to get back at Reed", so ye, I'm gonna assume this is why he wanted both the symbiote here (to mess with Reed and get a power-up) and to also kill him due to holding a grudge
Yeah nah i'm not buying this, the way Lizard killed the Invincible Woman and Mister Fantastic is incredibly silly, especially Sue, who's arguably the most powerful member of the Fantastic Four. She could've blocked Lizard's head until he no longer breathes, Reed's powers are stretchable that it's impossible to get teared by a lizard guy (even with the symbiote suit).

This story reminded me of the 2018 movie, "Upgrade." I even went back and listened to the track, "A Better Place" while taking in the last few panels.
