  • Video of the Buitreras upwelling, exceeding the limit of -62m and reaching the level of -86.97m.
    History of the Cavity
The cavity was discovered by the Ubrique G.E.S in the summer of 1991. Several dives confirmed that it is a large cavity with a descending tonic and strongly emissive. -15 meters are reached, confirming clear continuity. In the summer of 1992, a mixed group of members of the G.E.S of Ubrique and the S.E. from the Casa de la Juventud de Alcobendas (Madrid) make a series of dives that allow them to descend to -36 meters, confirming the clear continuity, although the visibility of the upwelling is quite poor due to suspended silt. Given the magnitudes that the siphon is acquiring, the G.E.S. de Ubrique contacts Fidel Molinero and Carmen Portilla, members of SECJA in Madrid, who in the spring of 1994 proceed to a first dive, reaching -40 meters, the point where the cavity continues to descend. In the month of June Fidel and Carmen make a second and last dive where they reach -62 meters, stopping the exploration on a sand ramp that continues to descend. The G.E.S groups of Ubrique and SECJA make a publication and first sketch of the siphon.
In 2002, the Hydrogeology Group of the University of Malaga carried out a series of tests with tracers in certain drains in the Sierra de Libar in order to assess their vulnerability to contamination. Among the karst sinkholes studied is the Sima del Republicano. The results show that the waters infiltrated in it reappear about eighteen kilometers away and six hundred unevenness in the spring called Fuente del Moro or Buitreras Spring. The data confirm a great speed of water movement through a system that must be highly developed karstically and largely aerial, given the great difference in elevation between sinkhole and upwelling. These data reveal the existence of a large cavity that connects the plains of Libar with the Garganta de las Buitreras, with great speleological interest.
The AAES carries out several campaigns where different explorations are carried out up to the level of -45m, without finding galleries that can ascend.
In 2023, the Alhaurín el Grande Caving Group makes several attempts to put an underwater Robot, controlled by cable from the outside. It is visited on several occasions where, due to turbidity and high flow, they do not stop exploring safely. It is not until the end of August, when after a particularly hot summer, we descend to an elevation of -86.97m, the sediment blocking the passage and finding a hole with a significant flow of water, capable of raising some boulders.
Currently, work continues to cross that area.
