What is your process of getting the funding?
Our rescue doesn't own any land. We do fundraisers for care of the animals etc. We are foster based, not a facility. If you want a facility, look into leasing first
but how are you supposed to provide for your family??
In a few years when I’m out and financially stable, I want to starts an animal rescue for small animals, like guinea pigs , rabbits, rats, chinchillas, etc
Why wait? U don't need much money to get started. And u can get those funds donated...

@@gorlheck5574 it will be easier to form your rescue once your 18. And you can have foster homes if your home is not suitable at this time.. Most small rescues are foster based. Anyway, I think it's great you're planning this at your age. Good stuff.

You have great dream, it was mine too, but in my opinion zoo isn't a good idea... Zoo makes animal as a robot and prevents them from their nature. It can make them anxious and deppressed... Im a muslim, and my biggest dream is to rescue animals that is deserving to be loved. In this society, our lovely animals are being abuse, not fed by the humans, and some people may treat them like they have no souls, as a result, when accidents occur, most humans dont mind them and does not put them into the vet.
What motivated me to have animal shelter is that i have witnessed many incidents that cats and dogs suffered from car crash. I would like to help them but sad, im still a teen and i have no enough money.
My biggest dream is to care for myself, have a job, and establish an animal shelter, rather than buying luxurious houses, which is unmeaningful to me. Thank you for the video!

I am hopefully starting a small non profit rescue because there are so many animals on the street in terrible conditions where I live but I am only fourteen. I am so glad to have tons of people ready to help me.

im 16, ive been rescuing cats & dogs since i was 13. training them basic obedience, taking them to the vet & rehoming them! im going to start an actual rescue in about 7 months (in my home still, of course. May 2023) and set rules, start rehoming pets the right way. when i told the vet they said they approve :)! im going to be based off donations and rehoming fees to keep my business alive and going.

When I was a kid and lived out in the country, people often dumped stray dogs out there thinking they could survive in the wild better than a shelter. In the neighborhood there was an animal rescue that was often overloaded with dogs and cats, managed by one person and volunteers that helped out when they had spare time.
She had trouble affording things sometimes, but managed to keep up with feeding and enclosure care.
Rescues often have an adoption fee and/or a fee for taking in your animal, and it helps the place stay afloat. One could also ask for donations of money and food, as well as trying to implement a system of fostering out the animals for certain amounts of time.
It takes a lot just to keep the food bowls full
i have been working professionally in shelters for years and have finally decided to open my own. 🙂 i feel like i understand animals better than a lot of people and i am tired of feeling like things are inadequate here or there. i just want my own space where i know from top down the babies will get the care done right.

@@JeffColtenbackDogTraining Oh boy, that's a good question. This requires a little back story so bear with me. My town/county does not currently have shelter/pound/animal control. Years ago we had a vet who in edition to his normal duties agreed to act in that capacity. When he retired and closed shop, the city approached a local woman who was taking in strays on her own. They agreed to compensate her for the cost of 13 "cats" a year (spay/neuter/vaccines) We;; over the last 4 or 5 years she has blown way beyond 13 cats, averaging maybe 20-25 a year. She approached city council about upping that limit. Again she is one woman doing the best she can on top of her 9-5 job. She is very soft spoken and easily pushed around, so the city steam rolled her and denied any further help. Until a committee could find just cause. Well they made a "mistake" because we the committee found basically that the city/county had been taking advantage of a good situation. and decided to incorporate and found an NPO.
When we approach the city again in 2 weeks, its basically going to be a "here's the deal" conversation. Once articles of incorporation come back and we get approved for our 501c3 status. We will be looking at funding and building a place that can hold all the animals she currently has on top of any the sheriffs department brings in. Cats and Dogs. In this facility ideally, we would have an intake, vet office for a traveling vet to come in and help with things on site, and a place to wash/groom, of course a quarantine, separate cats/dogs area with housing for each as well as communal areas (rather than sticking them all in cages).. There will also be out door areas for the sheltered animals and we would like to add a separate public off leash dog park as a perk for the citizens of the county. As well as eventually have a business front for selling animal supplies (food, bedding, toys etc) as there isn't anything withing 45 minutes that offers that. The latter would be a means of generating an income to help cover the costs of operating.
As far as my involvement, the lady I mentioned before is unfortunately a little to emotional on the subject and has trouble being authoritative in a conversation. So the committee voted on me to be the incorporator and do the speaking to the city. In short, I have no idea, I am learning as I go.
@@JohnWeland that sounds like you have some awesome goals and great things ahead for the animals and your community. I've never run a shelter. But I've been involved with many shelters in NJ and have been to dozens of shelters in multiple states since I got sucked into rescue back in 2002. Lol. So.... I really want to start a nonprofit rabbit, guinea pig, and hamster rescue. I have the space, my old shed will do fine but it definitely needs fixed. I’m trying to decide if I want to just get a completely new shed or fix my old one. Anyways I’ve had experience with all three animals.
First video of interest that came up while I was searching info for starting my own neonatal kitten rescue. I foster Orphaned kittens, but I can't pull from shelters myself, need permission from the rescue. And by the time they reply, it can be too late for the bottle baby kittens in shelters

Thanks :) animals down here in Texas need as much help as they can get. Texas doesn't have the best animal protection laws and kill rates.
My Christmas wish list this year will be only stuff to start a little rescue. Even if I only have the funds to rescue 4-5 litters a year, it's a start ^-^

I've been wanting to start a nonprofit/small, family owned and operated, animal rescue and training company but I'm not sure where to start. The only thing that's holding me back is having to work from 3pm to midnight. As of right now, I help make and package dog treats.
Almost every rescue I know started while the founders had a job. Most still are employed while they operate their rescue.

Depends on the State. Some states may require 5..but 3 is minimum to put on founding documents

Start interviewing like minded people you know. Do it as if you're interviewing them for a job. Sometimes it's easier to trust strangers than friends when it comes to business.

A sanctuary is generally for dogs to live out their lives. A rescue is where you rescue and rehome dogs.

You can start by registering your non profit on legal zoom and start immediately. Always check local laws on how many animals and what type you're allowed to have

I currently save and foster cats and dogs. Where I'm from I usually get people from organizations to transport them to other sanctuaries or rescues, but it does take a long time and usually (mostly the cats) grow out of their "adoption phase" unfortunately. I've been wondering if I become a non-profit, will it open doors to have more access to transports? I do see the rescues here transporting animals of their own (not accepting mine or other peoples) and I want/need that, but I've been wondering if it is because they're a registered non-profit or something else. It would be much easier to do it at 18, because if you're underage you would need to partner with people 18+ so your organisation can enter into legal contracts and have a business bank account

Would it be the same for wildlife?
Creating the non profit corporation would be the same. But, if in the USA, you need to check with your state's Department of Agriculture. There are different guidelines, rules and laws for doing wildlife rehab and sanctuary work. You may likely need State Certification to conduct wildife rescue and rehab.
Hi Jeff I wanted to start a non profit too but I’m still working on for what animal I don’t care for which animal to be honest. The 501c do you need to have it? If you don’t do you need to let your donors know?
501c3 provides your donors tax benefits. You can just have a non profit without 501c3 and still get donations. But your donors can't write off donations

You would need to contact the municipality you live in for local ordinances if you want to build a shelter. But you can likely start fostering right away

Yes. A 501c3 non profit can be for farm animal rescue as well

Check with your accountant to make sure you follow laws and guidelines for soliciting donors..
Do you have any thoughts/tips for a physically disabled person? I have so much passion but I really am unsure I can do it because of my physical limitations (I use a wheelchair most the time but can walk *very* short distances).
You absolutely can do it. Go for it! Regardless of any physical limitations you can help animals. You need you be a good leader of people. You need to me a good motivator. You have to have a non profit in order to become 501c3.

I want to start a cat rescue in my town because there are so many cats on the streets here. The police station has a special program for dogs to keep from having to take them to the pound and find their owner if they have one but they don't have that for cats and I want to start a rescue for cats and work with the police station in a similar manner however... I live in a rental home with my mom, brother and sister and our landlord won't let us have cats.... I don't know if they would let us have them outside in an enclosure with a roof so they cant climb out and get into trouble (if i can, I hope for it to be temporary)... Rather getting the landlord to let me do that is possible or not, can I establish a nonprofit, raise funds, and use some of the funds to rent a place, that will let me keep the cats, specifically for the nonprofit? Ugh i hope that makes sense.
You can establish your non profit and fundraise. All monies must go towards running the non profit and its mission. You cannot personally benefit in any way from rescue funds. Your best bet is to ask an accountant who is licensed in your area to make sure you are following the law.
Can I quit my job and start a rescue? If so how would I get paid for my work. Obviously work is involved.
This is something you should discuss with your accountant. I'm not a financial advisor. I do know people who take a paycheck from a rescue. But I have never taken a dime from our rescue.

I want to rescue farm animals but I only have 2.2 achers, and I work a 9-5 and I have no infrastructure for shelter and fencing. so I don't see how to even pull it off... As far as I can see it would require a fairly large amount of initial investment to even get up and going.
That's why fundraising and donations are so helpful to support the non profit. And you can start rescuing one animal and go from there.

And is would I also gain any profit from it to cover my own personal expenses while paying for the organization itself? I do have many questions but I want to start as soon as possible.
You can start right away. You don't need a job. But you cannot take money from the rescue for personal use. You can get reimbursed for monies spent on the rescue. But you cannot profit from donations

Just do it. People are actively supporting non profits during this time. Doesn't cost much to get started. Once you file your organization, save just 1 animal. And you're off to the races...

Actually I'm not too old I'm in class 9 only but in future I want to become a vet and want to make an animal rescue organization . So that no street animals starve for food or gets injured. No. As soon as you establish your non profit you can start conducting business. 501c3 status is so donors can get tax benefits from donating to your organization.

How do you fund non profits, just donations?
Donations, fundraisers, raffles, tricky trays, grants, to name a few
So what about when you are finally successful at starting. how do you go full time and make profit for yourself to survive on is that possible? (I mean years after getting the ball rolling)
I founded my rescue in 2010. I never took a dime from it. Some organizations have payroll. I opted to run a volunteer based non profit.
If you don’t take a dime how are you supporting yourself? Not questioning you personally per say but if I want to make this my full time job like running a sanctuary how do you do living expenses and stuff if not using some of the funding. I’m not talking about extravagant lifestyle but just living expenses and stuff.
@@stevenmiller419 it's not my source of revenue. I'm a dog trainer and author by profession. Rescue is not a source of personal income. Pretty simple.
@@stevenmiller419 I think we have the same idea. I’ve been talking to some people and many of them suggested sponsorships, government funding, donations , fundraising. I guess you’d have to raise a good amount to support yourself and your business. I’d say if you really want to get started start fundraising and telling people about it. Make a go fund me so some funds will already be there.....this is one of the kinks I’m trying to work out because I really want this to be something I do full time to support myself.
You can't legally fundraise without a non profit. Check out my video on how to start a non profit. Once established, you can start fundraising. Then you'll need your 501 status to get grants and corporate sponsors.

You have a trusted adult 18 years or older start one on your behalf. And you can likely be a board member right away.

Yes. But you'll need people 18 or over to partner with so you can have a business bank account and your organization can enter into legal contracts. At least here in the USA minors need parental consent to enter into contract. But technically, yes you can.
